Hm....
My favorites are the slower, more atmospheric tracks in Doom1 - E1M5, E1M7 and E1M8 which I wouldn't consider 'Metal'.
Me too. In fact, when I think of Doom music I mainly think of those tracks as characterising the game music for me so the description of Doom music being "metal" seemed a bit odd. Undeniably, of course, there are some pretty heavily guitar/metal based track in the game though.
Personally, I think the music of Doom is superb, coming very close to perfect. Tracks like D_E1M5 and D_E1M7 and a few others are, IMO, some of the best game music tracks ever made.

Most of Doom 2's music didn't do anything for me though. I don't even use it anymore when playing the game - although D_DOOM fits right in with the Doom 1 tracks I mentioned above.
Again I agree. Aside from a few select tracks, I find the Doom2 music often not particularly good and pretty ill fitting, and quite against the atmosphere of the game, in places. The music from Doom was probably the first video game music that I listened to outside of the game simply because I thought it was so good. The music in Doom2 doesn't come close. Much like how I don't recognise the description of the music from Doom in the OP I don't really think if the Doom2 music as Gothic atmosphere either.
