Tigrou Posted March 29, 2014 What is the heaviest and most complex DOOM map you have ever play ? By "heavy" I mean a map with a complex architecture, with tons of sectors transparency and whatever, that literally put the engine on his knees. This is something different from this thread where by area/size is important. Slowest I have found so far are in Sunder wad, MAP09 and MAP10. On my machine, ZDoom barely plays them at 20fps. (While GZDoom have no problem running them correctly). They are certainly not the biggest maps out there but i'm not a wad specialist. 0 Share this post Link to post
scalliano Posted March 29, 2014 Anything from Winter's Fury. http://imgur.com/maQtE9m WARNING: large image. I'm on an Intel i7 quad 3.1Ghz, 8GB RAM and 2x nVidia GTX460's and I struggle to reach 30FPS in that shot. 0 Share this post Link to post
printz Posted March 29, 2014 Those maps look impressive from those screenshots. Too bad they're still inhabited by primitive idiots who can't even get past doors. The difference becomes too jarring. It's like they belonged to some enlightened species that moved on, leaving scavengers to have fun eating wood. 0 Share this post Link to post
40oz Posted March 29, 2014 Boom has plenty monster operable actions. I'm sure the monsters can't activate them in order to contain the game play. It takes a lot of forethought to consider where the monsters will go and will be when they can use the technology around them making play testing awfully difficult, tedious, and harder to predict, especially considering the grand scale of sunders levels and population of monsters 0 Share this post Link to post
Phml Posted March 29, 2014 I'm not sure there's even any door in Sunder map10. 0 Share this post Link to post
scifista42 Posted March 29, 2014 Relevant: This guy ibm5155 made the map with an intention to overload ZDoom engine. He didn't succeed in that. DW thread with a download link: http://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mods/63670-tried-to-crash-zdoom-engine-but-i-failed/ 0 Share this post Link to post
Fletcher` Posted March 29, 2014 Misri Halek from Alien Vendetta is goddamn huge. 0 Share this post Link to post

It's a shame because I want to beat that before S.U.P.E.R Natural is released. 0 Share this post Link to post
Shadow Hog Posted March 29, 2014 Planisphere 2. All of New York City doesn't exactly make for the most stable Doom 2 map, but it's still impressive. 0 Share this post Link to post
Diamhea Posted March 29, 2014 MAP29: Ticket to Eternity from Plutonia 2. I was stuck on this level for over three hours, and there were hidden Commander Keens scattered about in very obfuscated places that would reveal a hidden exit if all 6 (I think) were found. I only was able to find 3 and gave up. 0 Share this post Link to post
40oz Posted March 29, 2014 rf` said:Misri Halek from Alien Vendetta is goddamn huge. y'know that's not the first time I heard that. I won't dispute whether or not misri halek is a good map, but I never found it to be comparatively larger than other maps in other megawads. Does it have to do with the transitions from seeing large vistas and cramped corridors in the same level? It's definitely one of those levels that feels like an adventure, but other than that I never found anything very remarkable about it. I'm beginning to wonder if I missed a large secret or alternate route or something. Phml said:I'm not sure there's even any door in Sunder map10. Haha I can't say I ever actually beat the map. I guess I was just speaking from my experience in mapping. 0 Share this post Link to post
Phml Posted March 29, 2014 Perhaps people see Misri Halek as huge because it's vanilla compatible. Only explanation I can think of anyway, because as you say there's many bigger maps around. 0 Share this post Link to post
Marnetmar Posted March 29, 2014 There are many bigger maps around but it's still pretty damn big. 0 Share this post Link to post
Waffenak Posted March 29, 2014 fascinating, map in first post seems interesting 0 Share this post Link to post
Suitepee Posted March 29, 2014 'Iron Exuviae' by dobu gabu maru (MAP31 in NOVA: The Birth). That map just blew me away with its amazing architecture......especially when the slaughter trap was sprung out of nowhere! The only other map that comes to mind is 'ZDLightcrap' by gggmork on the Monochrome Mapping Project. 0 Share this post Link to post
dew Posted March 30, 2014 Mene tekel. I have weighted your submissions and found them wanting. You speak in terms of complexity, but name mere maps of size and structural richness. Know then of rjspace31.wad and despair, for it is beyond all. It crushes all other maps simply by taking an advanced concept (rocketjumping in Doom) to an extreme, highly challenging end. Simply said, it might take you weeks or months of training to exit it, then it'll surely take you years to be able to complete it. 0 Share this post Link to post
T-Rex Posted March 30, 2014 Any of Jim Flynn's maps come to my mind. As far as vanilla-compatible maps go, they're pretty complex in architecture and puzzles that they take a very long time to pass. And there's Alien Vendetta's Misri Halek. 0 Share this post Link to post
kmxexii Posted March 30, 2014 5till L1 Complex does a pretty good job of killing FPS through its use of foliage. Object 34 is certainly complex, but you never see enough of it to impact gameplay quality. 0 Share this post Link to post

That took me longer to finish than Doom 2 in its entirety 0 Share this post Link to post
Pirx Posted March 30, 2014 planisphere 2? it's kinda big. actually huge maps are not my thing, eternal doom style switch hunts get quickly boring. 0 Share this post Link to post
