Your Doom folder structure?

Recommended Posts

How do you store all and any Doom related content on your computer?

My structure looks like this:

C-\
  |-...
  |-Doom-\ (Doom 2 v1.666, Perfect Doom v0.9 (the first wad I've ever downloaded), DOS dehacked)
  |
  |-Doom Experiments-\
  | |-(source ports, utilities, editors, Doom 2 IWAD, my very very first wads, misc)
  | |-Original Games-\ (IWADs)
  | |-Projects-\
  | |-(folders of my maps & projects, the ones in progress or halted)
  | |-crapwads-\ (my scrapped maps & projects)
  |
  |-Launch Doom-\
  | |-(wads I've downloaded)
  |
  |-Program Files-\
                  |-(some ports and Doom Builder 2)
"Doom", "Doom Experiments" and "Launch Doom" are folders that I've created back in 2011 when I was getting into playing Doom and first time mapping. I keep this structure because I'm used to it, even though I realize it's not perfect. Basically, I keep things where they were.

I have the IWAD, config and vanilla EXE in the base folder (e.g. …\DOOM). Then I put mods in subfolders with the same names as their ZIPs. All this is inside Dropbox, so I can preserve my mod collection and vanilla saves.

Ports are platform specific, so they're placed in separate folders, away from Dropbox.

All my WADs, along with ZDoom, are in one giant folder, "Doom".

My Doom folder has a Chocolate Doom folder, which has four separate folders (Ultimate Doom, Doom II, TNT, Plutonia). There is also a Doom 64 folder for the Doom 64 port, and WinTex/XWE folders.

I have a root folder that's titled WADS which has subfolders titled MODS (dehacked patches, sound/music replacements; anything that's not maps) IWADs (DOOM, DOOM1, DOOM2, PLUTONIA, TNT, UDOOMBFG, DOOM2BFG) DEMOS (all .lmp files) and PWADS

PWADs contains the entire idgames/levels/doom and idgames/levels/doom2 archive in the same alphabetically named folders format as the website browser. I have a MASTER folder for the Doom 2 master levels. I have additional folders for Doom shovelware compilations such as MAXIMUM for Maximum Doom, INSTANT for Instant Doom, FEVER for Doom Fever, DEMON for Demon Gate, DEATH for Deathdays, and D!ZONE1, D!ZONE2, and D!ZONE3. Additionally I have an EXTRAS folder for downloads linked here on the forums of stuff that isn't finished or doesn't intend to be an official release of anything. And lastly MAPPILE, which is all maps, finished and unfinished that I have made.

Documents/GZDoom - GZDoom excutable, SlumpEd executable, and a bunch of wads,s creenshots, wad.bak files, saves, and I think PrBoom is in this root folder too. No organization, except for projects.

After that the main folders inside this are Slade, NewSlade (Most recent version of Slade 3), ThreeCheers (Which has three subfolders, two of which have numerous sub folders and so on and so forth; This is my mod in Wads & Mods), SlumpEd (Again), and something else, but I can't remember what.

Really, it's a mess.

Documents>Doom

that's it, in there I have ZDoom and all the .wads .pk3 and etc.
There are also some other source ports folders inside like DoomRetro, GZDoom, Zandronum, PrBoom and the map editors.

Libraries\Projects\Mods\[Whatever I have going, maybe Doom maybe not]

Libraries\Moddding\[All of my modding tools]

Libraries\Documents\[Main folders of different sourceports]

Libraries\Documents\DoomLauncher\GameFiles\[Mods]

It's a rather sane arrangement.

C:\Doom - contains every IWADs such as doom2.wad, heretic.wad, plutonia.wad, etc.

C:\Doom\Wads - contains every PWADs. Some pwads which own the same theme, such as WolfenDoom, and some notable megawads like Alien Vendetta or Plutonia 2 have its own subfolder. (Wads\PL2 for Plutonia 2, for example)

C:\Doom\ZDoom - My favorite source port. It also has subfolder for GZDoom and ZDL 3.0

C:\Doom\Project - Every single work files I've made with level editing utility.

C:\doom has my port of choice (PrBoom+ 2.5.1.3), the IWADS, wadspy, and whatever PWAD I am playing right now.

Subfolders:
chocolate-doom (which is actually chocorenderlimits)
doombuilder (I bet you can guess what's in there)
gzdoombuilder (for when I want to use the sound propagation mode)
valiant (temporarily, while watching DotW's LMPS of it), which has the PrBoom 2.5.1.4 Beta in it as well as valiant.wad
wads (which has stuff I have downloaded but am not playing right now)and folder(s) for whatever map(s) I'm personally working on at the time (named for the map)

I have a skulltag folder on my desktop that contains a zandro, zdaemon, odamex, Legacy, ChocoDoom and Doom95 subdirectory. I have a DOOM and DOOM2 folder directly on C:\ for dosbox. I have way too many dupliacted wads lying around in random places, though... I think it's gonna be time to clear my disk soon here.

I have stuff scattered all over the place.

C: drive has the stuff I'm playing/using - IWADs, source ports, editors, utilities, PWADs and the original engines for DOSBox.

E: drive holds the wads and resources downloaded from forum threads, plus anything I've been working on.

F: drive has a partial archive of older port and editor versions, plus a lot of stuff that's been updated or removed from /idgames.

H: drive (an external drive) holds my /idgames mirror and a bunch of websites I've backed up over the years.

I simply have a ZDoom folder on my desktop, where I keep ZDoom and a bunch of WADs that I'm playing or I've been playing recently.

However, we also have a mess of various Doom folders on the G drive. These include alternate Doom ports, as well as the ZDoom folder used by my brother.

G:\FPP\
      |-...
      |-doom [Vanilla Doom]
      |-doom2 [Vanilla Doom II]
      |-doomport\
                |-Chocolate [Chocolate Doom]
                |-chocolateall [Chocolate Doom, Heretic, Hexen, Strife]
                |-doom95
                |-Eternity
                |-gzdoom\
                        |-new [Newer version of GZDoom, used by my brother to play online]
                |-Legacy
                |-Odamex
                |-prboom
                |-prboomplus
                |-retro [Doom Retro]
                |-WADs [apparently a bunch of random wads downloaded by my brother]
                |-zdaemon
      |-skulltag
      |-skulltagold
      |-Zandronum
      |-zdoom96\
               |-bunch of random subfolders for various Doom utilities and conversions
      |-zdoomnew\
                |-even more random subfolders with a bunch of utilities and WADs, including some in-progress work by my brother

I doubt I'll ever by happy with my file structure. Compared to previous structures I am pleased with the system I'm currently using.
All editors have shortcuts on the taskbar. Zandronum and Whacked are currently installed in Programs Files (x86).

E:\Doom\ (Contains shortcuts to all the source ports I use)
      |-...
      |-AoS\ (Adventures of Square)
      |-Editors\
                |-DB2\
                |-GZDB\
                |-SLADE3\
      |-IWADs\ (All Doom wads except for shareware, Hexen, Heretic etc.)
      |-My WADs\ (Personal projects, contains shortcuts to all the source pots I use)
                |-Rubbish\
                |-Shelved\
      |-PK3s\ (Contains shortcuts to all the source ports I use)
      |-PWADs\ (Also houses deh files for their associated PWADs, contains shortcuts to all the source ports I use)
                |-Textures\
      |-Source Ports\

All non-Steam games go into C:\Games, from there, as far as Doom is concerned,

Doom\
	Ports\
		- I'm not gonna list 30+ directories here. Both proper and development port releases, old stuff like Fusion I was messing around with,
test ports that never saw light of day, etc.
	Projects\
		- Should be called "Experiments", since nothing ever gets past the experimental stage.
	Resources\
		- Pretty self-explanatory. Filled with stuff I'll probably never use.
	TCs\
		- Any older TC or standalone goes here.
	Utilities\
		- I like having all my tools in one place.
	Wads\
		- No organization. I tried that once, but folders are inefficient. Tags would be much better, but I'm lazy.
I follow this basic structure for any relevant game. If it has modding and I've dabbled in it, the directory will be laid out this way, more or less. I'm not incredibly anal about organization, but I do at least want the basics.

DOS executables and IWADs are stored in folders named "DOOM", "DOOM2", "PLUTONIA", and "TNT" in C:\DOS. Most PWADs are stored in C:\DOS\WADS. Source ports and mods are located all over the place.

The downloaded stuff in ~/jeux/doom/ where it’s vaguely sorted.
The IWAD in /usr/share/games/doom/, the Doom PWAD in /usr/local/share/games/doom/wadoom/ and the Doom 2 PWAD in /usr/local/share/games/doom/wadoom2/.
The executables in /usr/bin/, /usr/games/ or /usr/local/bin/.

C:/Users/.../doom - main directory. Contains all wads, executables and demo files (there are 776 files in total).

.../doom/stuff - lots of stuff like SFX, textures, sprites, etc
.../doom/xdre2 - speedrunning tools
.../doom/GZDoom Builder - mapping tool
.../doom/chocolate doom - Exclusively for Chocolate Doom port. When I'm extremely bored, I love to play 2002ado on 320x240 with OPL music.

There's also a bunch of empty folders.

I recently built a new computer without PATA support, and moved the stuff I thought important to my new drive.

C:\Games\Doom\
Doom Builder
Eternity
IWADs
Palettes
Projects
Skies
Slade
Textures
Wads

No point in delving into the subfolders beyond, but I've been keeping things simple and to the point, so that further expansion will be intuitive and meaningful. I don't see myself using much other than Eternity and Choco, so a parent folder for Source Ports doesn't seem to be a priority at this point.
