invictius Posted June 7, 2015 I have a road trip coming up shortly, and from prior expreiences things are going to get too bumpy/not enough room for a mouse or trackball. There's no way I can go back to using ctrl+alt+arrow keys like I did up until the quake 2 days... has anyone had experience using a laptop touchpad effectively? 0 Share this post Link to post
Maes Posted June 7, 2015 As long as you don't plan on winning any 1-on-1s on ZDaemon, you can still have a stroll oh HMP -maybe even UV on the vanilla IWADs using the touchpad, as long as you keep your approach more tactical than run'n gun. A modified WASD is what you probably have in mind -and what I've used. However, be prepared for some wrist and hand pains, and always keep the classic arrow + Ctrl/Alt/Space controls mapped -you might need them. However, I recall that even using the laptop itself as a mouse surface was more comfortable and efficient in the end. 0 Share this post Link to post
Deleted_Account Posted June 7, 2015 Lately I've been using this set up to play the PSX Doom TC and Doom 64 EX. Though I'm sure there are better setups you can use. E = Use Q = Automap W = Forward S = Backwards A = Strafe Left D = Strafe Right Shift = Run Left Arrow = Turn Left Right Arrow = Turn Right Space Bar = Fire Up Arrow/Down Arrow Key = Change Weapons 0 Share this post Link to post
nxGangrel Posted June 7, 2015 If your laptop has numeric keys, use 8, 4, 5, and 6 as WASD, 1, 2, and 3 as look down, center, and up respectively. ALT to fire, and Space to use. And if you need jump and crouch; A for Jump, C for crouch. My dad and I used to play all (FPS) games this way, but I stopped around 3 years ago when I played one game that required a mouse to look. Used it for five years by the way. EDIT: I forgot to mention, use 7 and 9 for strafe left and right respectively. 0 Share this post Link to post
scifista42 Posted June 7, 2015 Untested suggestion: Left hand on WASD, right hand on IJKL. WASD = move. JL = turn left/right. I = fire. K = use. 0 Share this post Link to post
Average Posted June 7, 2015 I often play on a laptop. I, for the life of me, cannot get to grips with the trackpad. My favoured keyboard set up is: W,A,S,D E - Use Left - Turn left Right - Turn righ Up - Fire Down - Next weapon I also have the right shift key as Pause in case the phone goes and I have to mute the sound quickly. :) 0 Share this post Link to post
ReFracture Posted June 7, 2015 W = Forward S = Backward A = Strafe Left D = Strafe Right Spacebar = Use Ctrl = Fire Left Arrow = Turn Left Right Arrow = Turn right 0 Share this post Link to post

geo Posted June 7, 2015 I played Doom for years with no mouse. I use the arrow keys with the right hand and everything else with the left. 0 Share this post Link to post

Pencil of Doom Posted June 7, 2015 I use this: Arrows:Foward, Backwards, Turn Left and Turn Right A:Fire S:Use Q:Strafe Left W:Strafe Right E:Next Weap R:Prev Weap C:Run/Walk Tab:Automap 0 Share this post Link to post
scifista42 Posted June 8, 2015 40oz said:WASD forward/back/sidestep Left right arrows turn left and right Up arrow fire Down arrow use I like my IJKL version of this setup better, because you have your right hand closer to the weapon selection keys as well as a lot of alphabetical keys which can be binded for whatever purpose. 0 Share this post Link to post
Obsidian Posted June 8, 2015 Up to move forward Down to move back Left to turn Left Right to turn right Shift to run Alt to strafe Ctrl to fire Space to use Been running that pretty much the entire time I've ever played Doom. 0 Share this post Link to post
Varis Alpha Posted June 8, 2015 don't even bother playing Doom with a touchpad. you're likely going to hurt your wrists before that. here's what i used for ZDoom when i have no mouse: WASD: same as usual left and right arrow keys: turn left and right up and down arrow: aim up and down space: fire e: use q: jump c: crouch f: alt-fire unfortunately, even playing the game like this, my wrists hurt after playing for a while. 0 Share this post Link to post
