Sorry it took so long to reply, I'm going through "Eternal DooM" and map 20 was a real bitch -- it took me almost two days to stroll around finding all the swtiches, monsters, and secrets (okay, I had to use an editor to find out that green torch/teleporting Arch-Vile thing). :-)

Haha, don't feel bad about that. I've never finished eternal map30 at all because I could never figure out where to go. Granted I could go consult a demo walkthrough of the level, but I'm usually pretty intuitive about noticing possible secret areas (or perhaps that's all in my head) and this map definitely stumped me. This may be the only megawad I've never completely finished because of it.

That might be an interesting topic... "which megawads have you started, but never finished and why (excluding the ones that are so bad that you quit after 5 minutes)?"

That Hellgate NM speed + pacifist was very nice. Very nice. Did you try UV speed as well? (I can imagine NM speed would actually be quicker than UV speed because of the increased movement speed of the demons). An UV max would also be interesting, especially if it's played Tysonish and not just circling around waiting for infights, then mopping up with the plasma (I had a crappy 1:46 first try using that tactic yesterday).

Doug, loved your comments about HL2 in that thread in "Everything Else"...
Op. edit: thanks. I know this isn't the place for it... and I know I share my feelings too much. The idea of Steam is good in a perfect world, and it is nice it is offered as an option, but it shouldn't be required. It's a step in the wrong direction for personal security and individual freedom. Both of which are disappearing rapidly (in the USA at least). Good game spoiled by the interface... I'm giving my brother my copy... I regret paying money for it now.
back to Grazza's demos!

No, I didn't try UV. You could well be right that it would be slower, or at least that you'd need more luck for the monsters to let you past them to reach the switches. Actually, what prompted me to record this was that Bejitas had done a NM demo in which he spent time killing monsters, and I suggested that a pacifist approach might be worth trying.

I've found it difficult to retain much long-term enthusiasm for any game that needs a CD in the drive, to be honest. Only HL and UT, and in both cases their CD just sat in one of my drives for the best part of a year.

Thanks. I try to choose categories that are interesting to record on the map in question, and hope that translates into them being interesting to watch too. If you've got the Master Levels, then there are some good maps in there which have had surprisingly few demos recorded on them. Ledmeister has done some very solid work in the Max (or rather Led-style) and nomo/help categories, but there's not much else been done. BTW, some of the maps in dem.wad where I haven't recorded anything might make for some very bloody Maxes (but some ponderous Speeds, I fear, though in some cases I haven't looked too closely).

Are there any demos for equinox map 12 available,
or is that map too much luck-based ?
I played it recently and found that map very hard,
would be fun to watch I guess.

AFAIK, there aren't any demos on Equinox map12.

I really like that map, and thought about recording something on it a long time ago, but felt it would be very hard indeed. Ammo is in short supply, and there are lots of places where it is very easy to die. The end isn't such a problem though, since you can strafe-run to the exit teleporter before the structure has risen. I'm not aware of any other major shortcut tricks though.

I vaguely recall trying out a skill 1 Max, and finding that difficult enough. For a UV Speed, you'd need to decide how to use the invulnerability to best advantage. I think the route would need to be very carefully worked out, and that it would be a difficult run no matter what. Certainly not infeasible though.

Yes the end is relatively easy, but there are some points
where lot of luck is needed, the run through the slime,
where the monsters easily block the way, or the part with
the crusher, or the three archviles at the start area.
Maybe it wouldn´t be much fun to record over and over, but
the result should be amazing.

Someone should do a tas demo :P

Hmm. Seeing there have been lots of random demos going on, I'd like to see a demo of this map of mine.

http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=12890

It was sorta made for max-demos. Try and complete it under 18 minutes, Erik Alm did a 21:08 max demo of it.

Yes, that was nice.

Here are two more from me:

Outpost 21 by Scott Amspoker, NM in 1:59. A classic map and a fairly easy run.

Deep Atak by Jack Vermeulen, UV Speed in 1:58. This one was a fair bit of work.

The map isn't really that tough if you know what you're doing. I'm working on part Thematic Elements 2 now, which will be even harder.

I wasn't sure whether to upload this one, because it's kind of scrappy, but I found it quite entertaining when I watched it afterwards, and I don't imagine I'll be improving it any time soon (fed up with the vital jump near the end getting blocked).

Enigma by Jim Flynn, map08 UV Speed in 4:16.

This map is a later version of The Tower, which is what reminded me of this map (and gave me a few route ideas).

Odyssey by T.Elliot Cannon (aka Myscha the Sled Dog), Map04 UV Max in 6:11.

I'm not happy with the finish, but I spent a while trying to improve upon this, and my times just seemed to go into reverse. I'm not even sure where I was losing time, so blah. The zip includes a few miscellaneous extra bits and pieces.

I did a couple of demos on a chaotic map that is currently in /newstuff:

Courtyard Escape (requires gothictx) by Lars Thomas Boye (aka Larsboy): UV Speed in 2:12 and UV Pacifist in 2:34.

Nice demos, great to watch someone else playing my map!

You mention how you get blocked by monsters if getting all three keys before going for the switches. Not sure if it would help, but you could get the bfg after getting all keys, as this will then be available on the column near the exit.

I decided to revisit one of my favourite maps, and improve my UV Pacifist on map04 of Enigma. The old time had been 6:30. The new time is 1:12. Ahem. Yes, I had missed a trick. It's a sloppy but lucky run, which I haven't been able to improve upon.

larsboy: I doubt it. I think going for the BFG would lose more time than it would save.

It dawned on me that the switch trick opens up a new route possibility, so:
Enigma map04 ("Gulch") UV Speed in 0:56 and Nightmare! in 0:57.

I've got mixed feelings about the NM - my previous NM demo on this map (1:34) used a horribly difficult route, and took several hours' work just to get one exit. This one took less than twenty minutes.

This was the natural one to try next...

Enigma map05 ("The Wheel"): UV Speed in 1:06, UV Pacifist in 1:16 and Nightmare! in 1:39. All in this zip.

The NM is just a cautious first exit, while the other two were the product of a bit more work. The Pacifist has some single-digit health.

Me too. Glad you like the Enigma demos. I'd like to do UV Speeds on all 9 maps, but am not sure how speedrun-friendly 6 & 9 are (haven't really looked at them yet from that viewpoint, but don't know of any major shortcuts). I've got a Speed and a Pacifist on map01, but they need improving.

I sure won't be any help from the speed run standpoint. For whatever reason, I have just never been wired that way, but do appreciate those that are.

My focus on entering a map is to simply kill everything and get out. When I run past a monster it makes me feel cheated that I didn't get to whack em'.

Silly, I know, but such is the brain of a purely max runner.

Anyway great job on the runs. Looking forward to any more you might do.

As promised...

Enigma map01 ("Mt Doom"): UV Speed in 0:41, UV Pacifist in 1:01 and Nightmare! in 0:48. All in this zip.

UV Speed and NM are pretty much the same route. I feel a bit guilty about not using the faster route (skipping the armour) for NM, but after a whole string of 0:49s and 0:5x's, I decided enough was enough. Pacifist needs an entirely different route because some imps are in the way, and I didn't see any pacifist way to remove them.

Here's one on a pwad that shouldn't require any introduction:

The Waterfront by Scott F. Crank, UV Speed in 1:06.

Note: This replaces one (1:10) that I uploaded a few hours ago, in which I had missed a trick. That demo is included in the new zip though.

For some reason, I decided to do a stupidly difficult pacifist:

A few more demos:

Enigma by Jim Flynn, map09 UV Speed in 2:24. Features a little trick to get the keys rather quicker than intended. When I played this map casually recently, it took me more than an hour, so heh.

UAC Research Vessel #1024 by Will Hackney (AKA Kid Airbag AKA Archvile46), UV Speed/Pacifist/Reality/Lemmings in 0:06. A simple key grab and then a barge past a cyber. Took quite a few attempts to get it down to six seconds.

And on the subject of very short demos, here's a silly one:
Nuclear Central Version 1.1 by Stephan Ferraro, Nightmare Pacifist in 0:08. NB: this map tends to crash some versions of prboom.
