How do you run demos?

Recommended Posts

First of all; how do you run demos? I can't figure out where to put them. And second; does anyone have a link to a demo of Go 2 It completed without cheats (on Ultra Violence, preferably)? It would be most appreciated if you could post the link.

If you want to watch them using the DOS exes, they need to go it is simplest if you put them in the same folder as the exes.

If you're using a port, you can put them anywhere you like, but putting them in the same folder as the exe means you won't need to give a path to them in the command line. Otherwise, if you use drag and drop or launch it by defining an appropriate file type, then it doesn't matter where you put them.

"Go 2 It" demos can be found here.

Nope. Say you have doom2.exe (for example) in c:\doom2 and you have a demo, whatever.lmp in c:\demos. Then you'd write at the command prompt ->

c:\doom2>doom2.exe -file c:\demos\whatever.lmp -playdemo c:\demos\whatever.lmp

Adding the .lmp to the -file parameter as well as the -playdemo parameter works for any demo, on any PWAD/IWAD using the old doom executables and most (all?) new ports.

Yes, I know that (and considered putting in a note about it), but it seemed an unnecessary overcomplication for someone struggling with the basics of watching demos.

To be exact:

c:\doom2>doom2 -file ..\demos\whatever.lmp -playdemo whatever
