It goes out of sync part way through level 2. On both doom95 and prboom. Does anyone else have this problem?

Either run using plutonia as a pwad from doom95, or you can still run with your final doom setup with prboom as long as you add -complevel 2 to the command line.

Doom95 behaves in a slightly different way from the DOS executable which comes with DOOM II, which was used to record the run. Make sure you use either an updated version of Chocolate Doom, PrBoom or PrBoom+, or the DOS executable from DOOM II or the DOOM shareware distribution (and under DOSBox unless you have Windows 9x or DOS). Doom95 will desynch playing most COMPET-N demos that aren't for The Ultimate DOOM.

As emailking says, make sure Plutonia is loaded with -file, under DOOM II, or force the DOOM II compatibility level (2), because Vince's max demo was recorded that way (as noted in the text file), otherwise the engines behave like the DOS executable for Final DOOM instead of the one for DOOM II. This would also be necessary with the DOS executable because only the one that comes with Final DOOM (or some versions of Doom 95) can load Plutonia directly.

There are three ways the vanilla demos can work, even though they are all marked as v1.9:
  • As the executable for DOOM II, the 3-episode DOOM release or the shareware of DOOM. This is the behavior of Chocolate, PrBoom or PrBoom+ when the equivalent IWAD is loaded and it can be forced with -complevel 2 (or -gameversion 1.9, in Chocolate Doom).
  • As the executable for The Ultimate DOOM or the Doom 95 executable. This is the behavior of Chocolate, PrBoom or PrBoom+ when The Ultimate DOOM is run as an IWAD and it can be forced with -complevel 3 (or -gameversion ultimate, in Chocolate Doom).
  • Like the Final DOOM executable. This is the behavior of Chocolate, PrBoom or PrBoom+ when Final DOOM is run as an IWAD and it can be forced with -complevel 4 (or -gameversion final, in Chocolate Doom).
While COMPET-N has a rule where you may only use the executable that came with the game to record, there is an exception, for a historical reason. You may use the DOOM II executable to record Plutonia and TNT demos. Thus it's necessary to check the text file of Final DOOM demos to choose the right IWAD, compatibility level or executable, or they may desynch. In a minority of such demos, the text file is wrong, as the player forgot what engine he was using or made a mistake, so if a Final DOOM demo desynchs, just swap to the other behavior.
