Hey Heretic, it's kinda hard to win a DM when you stop to admire the architecture. :p Gothic looks cool but plays like ass, where as Hellbents new levels got ragged on for being ugly but they play pretty damn good. I set up a server and had 'em going for about 20 hours on DC. Me and about 6 other people played all the way through 'em and then played through again. Why? Because they look pretty? No, because they were fun to play. Sure it could use a better look but the layout, flow, item placement and balance are pretty darn good.

IMHO: If it looks good but plays bad, how are you gonna have fun? I'd take a fun level over a pretty level any day....

Oh, and could someone tell me where to get the GL freindly version of Greenwar? I wanna put it up on the server but all I can find is the regular version....

Aw c'mon, I'm hurt. :) Gothicdm/Gothic2 don't suck. Exactly WHY do you think they suck? I think it has better gameplay than dwango and better looks, and the detail never slows down a comp or produces VPOs. Oh well, maybe it's just a matter of taste. I'm never really distracted by good looks. I'm actually motivated by them. I don't get how looks could prevent someone from fragging away, but that's just me.

I acually dont care about the theme or anything of a DM map, just as long as its good for DM, I like it. I'm not a picky person, I'll take whatever is there.

Exactly WHY do you think they suck?

* The rooms are fucking small
* The floor has too much height change
* The detailing takes over gameplay, therefore making the gameplay shit.

better looks, yes, better gameplay, not a chance in hell. if they detailed it any more, they would of got VPOs and it would of sucked even more.

I'm never really distracted by good looks.
I'm not either, but the gameplay still sucks.

I don't get how looks could prevent someone from fragging away, but that's just me.
because they cared too much about detailing than gameplay.

he talked to me about it on AIM and i pointed out the fact that there's too much BROWNGRN on the map, and he agreed with me. he says that he always tries to retexture it, but it eventually comes back as BROWNGRN.

IMO the gameplay suffers in Gothic DM mainly because it's just too cramped. Looks great, but maybe players now want a new style of play? I've noticed with some of the old school megawads from 4 or 5 years ago that it was all kinda like that. Just not enough breathing room for my liking...

Someone should make a new Gothic DM series, the textures are great just need new maps. :-)

My, getting angry now? Don't worry, I'm sure your middle school has some sort of anger management counselling. In single player, I'd agree with you 100% - looks are a very important part of gameplay. But they really aren't important in a DM level. The Dwango wads have some extremely fun levels to DM in, but really aren't great asthetically. In fact, one of my favorite levels (map 17) is one of the ugliest I have ever seen. Not much detail, texture misalignments ever where, a big brown mess of crap. But it's hella fun to DM in.

I still don't see why looks are more important in single player... I can take a crappy-looking but otherwise well-designed single player map as much as an equal DM map... I guess that if one plays SP casually and doesn't explore the map's playabilty fully that might be the case, otherwise there is no difference.

Why does everyone hate cramped dm? I personally don't like big huge rooms with nothing in them where everyone is only circle-strafing and shooting plasma.

I like to be able to hide, sneak, and surprise people. And when I'm outgunned I like to be able to lose the people who are tailing me. In a giant room that's impossible.
I like a few medium-to-large rooms, connected by many smaller corridors and lots of twists and turns. I like a little bit of strategy and not just shoot,kill,dead,respawn,shoot.

Here's a clue...the one that you can see is not the one that you want and all 3 bookcases do the same thing...somehow.
(I presume you mean the Red Card btw)

Did you even try any of the levels past the first few? There are something frickin' HUGE rooms in some of the levels.


The floor has too much height change

Umm, that's a GOOD thing. Flat DM levels are boring. Besides, many Dwango maps have large height variations as well.


The detailing takes over gameplay, therefore making the gameplay shit

I can't speak for the first one because I wasn't on the team, but we extensively playtested GDM 2 to make sure the detail DIDN'T get in the way of gameplay (getting stuck on 3D objects, etc). I remember getting told off by the team several times for some fancy effect that ruined the gameplay.


Weapon placement also sucks

The weapons are generally placed so that you can run around without being forced to pick them up and therefore switch weapons (which is very irritating for some people - nothing worse than grabbing a rocket launcher just as you're persuing an enemy), but still easily obtainable - definitely a good thing in my book. Weapon placement was probably the thing we discussed most during testing.

With a couple of notable exceptions, the maps were designed with both gameplay and detail in mind - we definitely did not sacrifice the former for the latter, although the latter was sacrificed for the former in many instances.
