It would be in the wad should you care to extract it.

You start the PK3 exactly like a WAD file.

WAD = far too limited for the stuff that is in ZanZan.

That's what I used to think too. Sure it's true for doom, but for complex (g)zdoom projects pk3s are much nicer.

On what, Doom as in "doom.exe"? Sure it's retarded, as it won't work.

Why it would be "dumb" on source offshoot engines where it may supply some benefits must be one of those secrets lost with the sinking of Atlantis.

I just want to know how to run a PK3 file. Gzdoom doesn't seem to recognize it, and when I did a search for something that could run it, I couldn't find anything at all.

- file lolgzdoom.pk3

Replace "lolgzdoom" with the actual name of the file. The ".pk3" is, for whatever reason, necessary to load the file.

Thanks Hobbs Tiger, I got it to work.
I've never played any wads with 3D models So I really don't know whether these are super advanced 3D models or not. I was kind of surprised by how short it was to be honest. When I hear the words "TC" I usually think massive 32 level megawad.

I can only think of one TC that got 32 maps. And that's Batman Doom.

Don't forget about the imaginary TCs created by all newbie mappers. Though, they usually have 64 maps.

I agree with this for the sole reason that pk3 files are also used by Quake 3, and I prefer for extensions to not be ambiguous, or be as unambiguous as possible.

Other extensions that bother me...

Half-Life Texture set: WAD (Obvious)
Duke Nukem 3D data: GRP (This was also used by Window's 3.x's Program Manager)
System Information: NFO (This is pretty ubiqutus in the cracking community for their elaborate 'readme' files)

Would it really have been too hard to come up with something else, like...pk0 or something?

Theey can be named anything if you use -file, although only zip and pk3 are recognized if you drag them over the executable or use 'open with'.

No. But why? PK3 seems to be the extension of choice to name ZIPs that contain game resources. If you want you can name them anything you like and ZDoom still loads them. But for some strange reason everyone using this format names them .pk3 - no matter for what game...

This is from Quake.

Not unless it's different. If it functions just like (or technically is) a PK3, then that's what it should be called. Or just call it a ZIP (because that is what a PK3 is). It seems to require the extension; so a PK3 for GZDoom renamed to ZIP would still load? If so, you can just call it *.zip. The only problem is that people would get confused, possibly unpacking them. So PK3 is a good name to use. PK0 does not make sense.

Maybe a new nam, like GZD, but PK3 has the potential of automatically being supported by any applications that can handle PK3 files. Whether that (PK3) is an advantage depends on whether it would cause conflicts between Quake 3 and DOOM apps or whether more generic apps could handle both.

You can name it *.rofl and it'll still load. As long as you put the .rofl there

If it were necessariy to distinguish DOOM source engine related PK3s or ZIPs from all others an extension like DPK (doom pak) might do.

WD2? While they aren't wads, you may be right, since the Quake PAK evolved into the Quake 3 PK3 (a ZIP).

It was the bad idea to use extension (pk3) which is already used by another program (quake3), because it kills a possibility of associations.

Myk: Well, they are Wads in the sense they collapse all data into one file. So the acronym is still true. Where's all data? :p

Of course, we could give it a spin.. and call it. Here's All Data. .HAD ;)

In part it's up to the user. I'm more of a doomer than a quaker so I have PAK associated to XWE, but I bet a quaker opens them with another more quake oriented application. If there really would be some problem with some of these auxiliary programs, then yeah, a new extension would help.

The reason it is 'of choice' is because it is used for all Quake 3 engine games, or at least all games that support it. Quake 3's engine got licenced like a motherfucker, so of course you see it everywhere.

And let's not forget Doomsday. I really didn't care when I implemented Zip support but almost everybody who started to use it called their files *.pk3. I only added code to omit the -file for .pk3 files a few versions after the initial release.
