It is obvious that it's nice to share a creation and to have others play it, but it's a matter of letting it and the players find its right place, whatever it may be.

Now, the question is: are people more or less likely to download a wad if it gets panned in /newstuff, or even omitted completely?
There's a huge stretch between "panning" and "omiting". And look at the controversial review this week. The reviewers (and critics in the thread and elsewhere, like you, hah) did "characterize" the wad. If you like realistic architecture you'll probably download the wad, but if you're mainly a fan of the type of gameplay exemplified by the game itself (without any or many modifications), you might avoid it, unless you want to try it anyway to be sure. And if a reviewer doesn't state crucial or critical points in a review (according to his own standards), he'll come out as false or will otherwise be omitting information that should be important to review readers.
Reviewers and critics have always been a kind of antithesis to authors, because it is their task to lay bare certain essentials of their work in order to help readers find what they prefer in a mass of works. Except when they get tipped off by the author or their publisher, that is.
