uhhhhhhhh

Here is a review of MattBratt111111111's wad that i was going to submit to the /idgames page, but it was too long... I was going to write "Fucking shit!" instead but accidentally slipped and gave it 3 stars, oops. Anyway, the review:

This "map" (though i suspect he made it by shitting on a scanner, scanning it, and then changing the file extension to .wad) is one of the most annoying things i have ever played. You start off in a room with all the weapons and a ton of ammo, a megasphere and two soulspheres, and loads of other items, to either side are 'enclosures', with thier walls on the ceiling, with a few zombiemen in. After they have been BFG'd you press the switches on the far wall and exit... and end up in the same room!, but now there are doors on the far end, the next room contains shotgun guys, and then the third map has chaingunners... you get the idea. Later on you see things like "corners", and then later still the doors are wider to allow the spider masterminds to roam through the level. Most rooms have a solid line of medikits and mega armour in so its almost impossible to die, unless you're mucking about, which i was. He also replaced map 31, which is... well... NUTS with more sectors. And a wolfenstien theme. And mostly pitch-black with light-amp goggles everywhere. And hardly any weapons and ammo and health. And traps with loads of arch viles and barons in tiny rooms. And long corridoors with a single imp in them... I couldnt even find the exit on no clipping (though i know there is one). I did find a room crammed with barons, pain elementals and three spider masterminds though, that was almost funny. Almost. In closing i'd have to say come back Guilio Galassi, all is forgiven!

Honestly wtf is that supposed to mean? There is no such thing as 'overdetailed', unless you're referring to detail which is actually impacting gameplay.. which is super rare. And if you have a pos system, that doesn't count... upgrade..

It means Tormentors map has too much detail. This is the reviewers opinion. Opinions have a place in reviews, if you don't think they do I suggest you look up the word. Also note the rest of the review. And I really don't see a 'pos system', not to mention any reason that it 'doesn't count'. 9_9

Thanks Alex for reviewing Austerity so I didn't have to!

Also, one sentence review for odactf1 makes me sad =[ but at least it was positive.

I felt rather ashamed of myself giving it such a pathetic review, but I didn't know what else to say.

Thanks for adding absolutely nothing to my post and going off on a tangent about me squandering people's opinions, which is not true.

Break down what i said a little clearer, and it should be obvious that i was merely expecting clarifcation on what defines too much detail. Ugly beams, poor use of textures etc..

Why do people play games based on newer engines?.. Because of the graphics.. More detail = better graphics.

So again, when you make a blanket comment like "too much detail", you're really being super general, so alexmax, can you clarify?

Beatable, of course. Maxable, hardly. I couldn't care less about a map that doesn't have enough ammo to kill all the archviles and at the same time lacks a berserk pack to make fisting them fun.

On the other hand, it was never even meant to be *maxable*, only beatable. :) Obviously, that's a matter of taste, so I'll leave it at that.

Why is it that the most "anticipated" single player WADs always has the strongest stench of fanboyism if someone points outs its flaws? Seriously, it's like there's a need to defend it (sometimes with irrelevant bullshit) until armageddon comes around and destroys us all.

Why is it that the most "anticipated" single player WADs always has the strongest stench of anti-fanboyism that has to find flaws at any cost even if there are no obvious ones? Seriously, it's like there's a need to trash it (sometimes with irrelevant bullshit) until armageddon comes around and destroys us all.

The term "Over detailed" is just as silly as the term "Not enough detail".

It's never down to how much or little crap you manage to stew into your maps. It's weather it has a place in there or not.

Does this object add to or detract from the design?

Tormentor's maps generally are filled with stuff that really just disturb the design of his maps, in feeble attempts at covering up a poor layout.
Austerity however appear to be one of his better designed maps. (I've not actually played it, I just looked at the screenshots, so I can't really speak for the layout or general game play of it.)

Speaking of blanket comments, how do you justify the statement that people play new engines because of the graphics? Have you asked these people? Not everyone places the same emphasis on detail and graphics, so the reviewers are perfectly within their rights to say that a map has too much detail if that's their honest opinion.

Since most people are intelligent enough to arrive at their own conclusions about any particular maps that receive unflattering comments, it doesn't matter anyway. Besides, people can learn almost as much about a map by the comments posted here as from the reviews themselves. Assuming they aren't put off by all the pointless drama that keeps filling the threads, that is.

Nice looking, gothic duel map for Skulltag. Like I previously mentioned, I have nobody to play this with (and bots suck), but it looks like fun anyway.

Now I regret putting this line in the Crudreams text file: "You may modify and re-use graphics as you will, with proper credits given". Why is a marble floor texture used on the ceiling, misaligned? It's rubbish like this that makes Gothic* sets look disposable alongside.

Justified:

http://gotgame.corante.com/archives..._assertions.php

and simple statistics... Why do people buy new things? So they can waste their money? No, because new products always come with improvements. If you relate that to the game world, if a game had near equal gameplay.. one with shitty graphics, or one with pretty graphics.. which one would the majority of the population play? Obviously the one that looked 'prettier'. It is improved over the shittier, crappy looking engine.

If you really want me to delve through the internet to find some psychology behind why people would rather have pretty graphics versus ugly ones i'm not going to bother. it's dead obvious already.

Explain Neverwinter Nights then. Relatively shitty graphics, awesome gameplay, has outlived a ton of RPGs. Maybe your blanket comment doesn't apply here.

In any case its completely off topic irrelevant bullshit.

Back to the topic, you have yet to give a clear cut reason why a reviewer cant state his opinion that a map is overdetailed.

Because it's stating an opinion as an objective fact, as opposed to saying "the map is incredibly detailed" and letting people interpret that according to their opinion or preferences. Because that sure doesn't look overdetailed to me.

Kristus wins this "Detail" discussion. The term in itself, or better what most people associate with it, is utter bullshit IMO.

How about this to end the stupid argument once in for all: I don't like the way Tormentor667 details his maps. Really, he's not the worst at 'overdetailing', but the way he details maps feels copy-pasted and uninspired, and his walls end up looking crowded and repetative, which makes me end up thinking "Why'd he bother?". And as long as he continues to detail the way he does, I'm going to keep reviewing them the exact same way.

Thankfully, you guys won't have to put up with any more of my reviewing for a while. As I mentioned earlier, I'm taking a break from newstuff. Reviewing simply takes too long for me, I'll sometimes spend an hour or two playing through a single huge map or set of maps just so I can give it what I deem a 'fair' review, which is fine when you only have a dozen or so maps, with maybe one or two of them being 'big', but when you had the backlog I had you perhaps can see why it was taking me so damn long.

Not that Tango's reviews aren't good, he did fine, and he probably uses different methods than I do, it's just that my methods take a longass time.

EDIT: Just to clarify, I only did the first three shithouse reviews. The rest are Tango's.
