I have no trouble at all believing the Chair Story until the actual chair incident happens. It's a great read, and the rationale of the symbiotic 3DR/Epic relationship actually makes a lot of sense. Good riddance to DNF though.

I saw an interesting comment that came out of this credited to a 3DR employee that the 2001 trailer was 100% pre-rendered mockup, which was pretty funny IMO. That trailer was the only tantalizing (for its time) piece of DNF footage I had ever seen.

I don't know about 'all that' development, they restarted the damn thing 10 times and probably had at least 2 generations of designers working on it at some point.

Well I guess Duke finally ran out of bubblegum AND asses to kick.

Seriously though, this sucks. I know Midway games went bankrupt a few months ago, but they are still managing to live somehow. Probably because of all the money the PSX Doom games and Doom 64 got them. ;)

just kidding...but this is really sad news. Totally blew me away. I hope they can at least form under a different company and release Duke. If not, like others were saying, sell the damn thing to a different studio to finish.

They should release everything they've done for DNF, from 1997 to 2009, under some sort of Creative Commons license.

I didn't say the game. Just a massive data dump of the models, textures, sounds, etc. they've made for the different engines.

Then they'd let the players make the game themselves. There could be a hundred different projects which would use these resources to make "indie" Duke Nukem games, and there would be countless mods. That would truly make it forever in development.

Considering there's been no press release from 3DRealms, and the only response from Apogee was "This doesn't affect Duke Nukem Trilogy" I have to take it with a grain of salt. 3DRealms are the kings of manipulation and hype generation. The last actual gameplay they released was back in what, 2001? And yet they've still gotten money to fund the game and massive media attention, and criticism, when they release a still frame screenshot. It may be a hoax just to generate interest in the game before they make a real announcement, or they might just announce the sequel to Duke Nukem Forever, Duke Nukem Resurrection in a month or two. I'm not sad to see it go if it really is gone, Duke 3D wasn't a terrible game, but it was far too cliched, misogynistic, and ultimately boring. Doom had better action, and Blood was funnier. Still it would've been nice if it had seen the light of day, just to see how badly everyone ripped it apart. I do have to give credit to 3DRealms for pulling the biggest con in video game history though.

News Flash - I've managed to secure a licence to develop DNF as a Roguelike, so without further ado here's a very short teaser video of Duke Nukem Fortress

I'm a little annoyed at their shutting down the website during Wolf 3D's 17th birthday celebrations. :(

I can' believe this... I used to hate Duke Nukem because of what he did to the Doomguy back in the day. But then later really enjoyed Duke Nukem 3D. Now he's gone. It's like finding out that the bully who used to beat you up in high school died of a drug overdose before he could finish college. So sad...

Just a thought, about a year ago some folks got the rights to make a Duke Nukem movie. You know, if the game would've come out 10 years ago, when it was supposed to, either Bruce Willis or Jean Claude Van Damme would've made a good Duke. Now, not so much. I think it shows just how much time has passed.

IIRC Serious Sam II also has a Duke corpse, and it continuously jabs at DNF. I think the whole premise of the game is "Sam has to save the world from aliens because that blonde guy never showed up."

3DRealms was way past their prime, I'm honestly surprised they even lasted this long. It's still sad to see happen though, they did make great games back in the day.

This unfortunately is something I see happening to ID Software soon as well.
