I had no idea Nerve had members of Rogue in it.

In that case, I'm not too worried about getting an episode of Sewers and Betray stuff :p

As for Doom II itself, ive fortunately been stopped from replaying it on GZDoom, as I'll now save it for this version

And who knows, maybe I'm wrong. But that's extremely unlikely because I'm always right.

even if the maps aren't ripped from the new episode to be played on PC, I think a Doom64 Absolution styled remake from scratch would suffice.

Well, here’s a new article. It doesn't give any real new information. But it does name the new episode as "No Rest for the Living" and give names to both the maps demonstrated so far "Earth Base" and "Pain Labs"

I wonder if they're going to just tack it on after MAP30 or if they'll have the 3 sections and the new levels selectable as "episodes".

Honestly not any more exited about this than I would be about any other megawad/mapset showing up on /newstuff. "Official" doesn't mean much these days. I'm sure the maps will still be pretty good, fun to play, etc.

I agree. I'm sure it won't be as good as a lot of the great stuff here. However,
I can play these on my Xbox
It's cool to see developers actually getting paid to make Doom maps
Though "official" doesn't automatically make it good, it's still a good sign that these will be at lest decent and they'll run well
Seeing new maps made might get more people into Doom mapping. As of now, most of the Xbox Doom players are absolutely clueless about the game and its community

Yea, but it's the "Id flavor" that makes it so good!

Despite the fact Id is not making these maps at all, and even if they were, nobody who originally made doom in the first place would have anything to do with it?

Yea, it's just that playing official maps always feels more exiting somehow. It's knowing that your playing official Id Software approved maps that makes them feel different from the regular community made maps somehow, or at least i feel that way.

I dunno, I'm much more excited about Whispers of Satan than I am this new episode.

I'm curious about these maps because they'll be the work of people who are used to professionally designing games with significantly more advanced engines. When you take some people like that and tell them that they gotta make some Doom maps if they wanna get paid, what happens?

Considering Nerve is almost all ex-id and ex-Rogue employees, it's probably not that much of a big deal for them.

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if a few of them are recreational Doom mappers themselves. That might be how the idea for a new episode came about in the first place?

Fingers crossed some Strife mappers are still onboard. Goddamn that game had some awesome usage of the Doom engine.

Yeah. Admit it Creaphis, you'd be ecstatic if after years of working with the new high tech thang you got to work with an older engine, which you might already be familiar with. I'd take a dock in pay to work on that team.

I get the feeling the writer of that article has never played Doom, or has only played it for a few levels on ITYTD and IDDQD.

I guess I really have turned into a bitter old Doomer if I'm picking holes in the article like that :p

"the new co-op mode" made me giggle like mad.

I'm pretty sure it's okay to call split-screen multiplayer Doom a "new mode" hey :P

But that was in XBLA Doom 1 :p

And Doom 3's Doom 1, 2 and Master Levels before that!

For non-hobbyists, going back to a much older engine isn't going to be as much fun. You'd likely have forgotten almost everything about it while learning newer engines, which require more knowledge and dev time to use.

Considering that pre-school children in China are being shown how to use Doom Builder so that they can express there creation (or some shit like that):

I really doubt a professional level designer would much of a problem with picking up and using a Doom level editing program.

I guess it depends on the person. If I was paid to make Doom levels every day, but got a chance to learn and work on a project for Thrust (no I'm not a hobbyist, I played with it for maybe half an hour several months ago), I'd be excited. I wouldn't want to make those levels for the rest of my career, but a break from my more "advanced" job to work on something simpler would be nice.

I hope these guys were smart enough to do some research into Doom editors, and are using Doom Builder 2 instead of something ancient. Otherwise, making this episode definitely wouldn't be a pleasant break.
