No, that's actually pretty much how we hear it. Every time Skulltag comes up here, it immediately gets derailed by people demanding the source release, and it's usually in a snide, holier-than-thou way.
That reply comes out like people here owe you something. You're using the Doomworld service to get the word out about your project. That's something. Don't tell me you can't take a critical perspective here or there when that happens. Like I told Carnevil, just because everything is not to your benefit it does not mean you have nothing to gain from it. You could say it's also holier-than-thou to tell the regulars of a forum not to post what they think about some news item. If you don't choose to release the source, that's fine, your decision, but it's also fine to see the guys remind you periodically that they are still interested in seeing that, here. Our "annoyance" has probably helped you decide to release older versions, that you noted above, for example. If people just quieted themselves there would be an even lesser chance of any such release, ever.

These controversies can also attract attention to Skulltag (at least people are talking about it here in some way they find interesting) and produce some talk on open/close sourcing.

It's up to the Skulltag guys whether they want to release any source or not. I'm in favor of it personally, but hounding them about it isn't right.

This a thousand times.

Damn it. We had actually agreed to do this, it just got lost in the release shuffle. :P Thanks for reminding me! Added back to the todo list.

Thanks! Are you going to release 97d5 or something earlier? And as 98b/98c/98d/99whatever/etc. come out, are you going to continue coming out with newer versions? What if someone figures out how to modify the older client to work with the newer game?

The message here I think is not "Don't talk about this", it's "You guys realize you are looking like a bunch of toolbags by continuing to beat this dead horse, right?"

I missed this comment. This is great news! Perhaps this might be a good, pragmatic strategy to adopt in the future - release the source for older, obsolete versions once enough has changed in the current version to make them incompatible. It's not perfect but personally it satisfies most of my concerns.

Both sentences imply about the same thing, except the latter one is more inflammatory. Your point? Why would you think of someone as a "toolbag" for saying things you don't want to hear if not so they shut up? Note also that "dead horse" is another rhetorical instrument for silencing discussions. News comments are independent and autonomous of the news. We comment, claim and discuss what we want here, it doesn't need to directly serve the aims of the item in the news, nor serve any immediate practical purposes. Skulltag has its own site for its own promotion. If you come to Doomworld with it, expect the Doomworld people to express themselves about it in their own way.

I would expect that they would release the source code of every release SERIES, therefore removing any chances of this. For instance, releasing 97 now that 98A is out and the ZDoom base is VASTLY different, plus hundreds if not thousands of other changes, making it very very unlikely that anyone will be able to figure out how to get this up to date with 98A. However this also means we won't see the 98 series source until 99a comes out :P
