We're making "such a damn deal of it" because you don't know when you're wrong. For example, here's an older version of an unusual weapon & monster combo, another replacement monster and a couple of fairly complex levels that are all older than Doom 2.

Really in the end the conversation didn't even involve you. On top of that, all the links you posted don't prove your point as they are not separate monsters or guns like Doom II only modified. Really I don't feel like dragging this conversation on because it is completely trivial. So unless you have any good reason not to, I'm done with the subject.

You realize that Doom 2 was released prior to ultimate doom right? It was a huge jump from the shareware version with much more complex levels. No modder could have done that much to the game.

If adding new mobjs is all you're reffering to, then no. Since they didn't have the source, they were rather limited in what they could do. But mods like Aliens TC shows that they sure had it in them to create rivaling products.

So, early 1994 mappers were not capable of doing id quality work?
Ok, disregarding the monster issue which was solely due to technical limitations as they required modifying the source how about these:

http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=218
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=286
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=305
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=461
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=690
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=724
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=750
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=941
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=12814 (*)
http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=13011 (*)

* don't let the upload date confuse you. These files were initially not part of /idgames but are from before Doom 2.

And let's not forget this one:

http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=1021

I think this shows more than anything else what these early mappers were capable of and far outdoes everything id's own mappers ever cooked up. The final release date may be post Doom 2 but there were betas of this map out months before the final release, already containing 60-70% of the final level.

If this is not April fools: A doom remake of what should have been, not some Doom 3.

If this is April fools: Protest infront of id Software.

As you may know, id Software has decided not to release any new official Doom 4 information until QuakeCon 2010. Unfortunately for them and perhaps to the joy of info-hungry Doom fans all over the globe, an early alpha version of Doom 4 has leaked to the hands of a couple of naughty Doom-loving individuals.

The anonymous duo of naughtiness has decided not to spread the leaked version further to avoid legal measures from id, but have released a bunch of information, a screenshot and a map view of E1M3.

A quote from the naughties:

So there you have it: Doom 4 is actually going to be exactly what classic Doom fans have been craving for for years. Let the tears of joy be shed!

GOD DAMNIT!

I was really looking forward to see those leaked screenshots :(

......I hate April 1st.

I can think of a number of fan-made levels released prior to Doom 2 that were superior to the vast majority of Doom 2 levels.

I actually enjoy Doom 2's levels for the most part, but these three wads all had levels that were either equal or greater to most of the Doom 2 levels in some way, and they all came out beforehand.

Megapack

The Enjay replacement for the shores of hell

Come Out Fighting (The text file lists the release date as 7th October 1994, however I'm pretty sure the original release was a few months before that - most likely it came out before the previous .wad I listed (they have the same author). Also, while 7th October was after the U.S. Doom 2 release date, both I and this .wad's author are British and Doom 2 didn't come out here until October 10th ;).)

Slaughter Until Death

The Evil Unleashed (Again this just sneaks in because the authors are German, and the .wad was published before the European release of Doom 2.)

Too bad none of that matters since doom2 will always be played more than any of that stuff. Also hi NiGHTMARE!

Damn right, Doom 2 has been one of my first games. Yet, if it wasn't for the modding community, I would've givin up playing it.

I wasn't the least bit fooled over this joke. The whole screen reminded me of some monster voxel project made for another KDiZD project. That screen shot was also too weak to demonstrate the Id Tech 5's power and vast memory consumption.

By the way... Shouldn't Id be more concerned over making their future game projects lose weight instead of eating more memory like Windows 8?

(I can confirm Windows 8 is in development and scheduled to launch during 2012... Not really the end of the world, but it's a start to the end of bad marketing hopefully. Not really an enthusiast, I just want those guys who are making useless code fired along with the sales representatives!)

I smell fake. I've seen that pinkie somewhere before. I've seen that overhead 3D map from an indie game similar to Smash TV.

Yes, it was a prank alright.

Since some of you were curious about the stuff I used in the images, here's a basic summary:

  • The pinky demon "HD sprite" is actually a fan-made maquette. I dunno who made it though.
  • The full status bar face artwork can be found here.
  • The screenshot was taken with Risen3D utilizing its high-resolution texture packs.
  • The map view image is a shot of the Classic Doom 3 E1M3.
