But what's the point when every weapon is the same? Different graphics aside, it makes weapon selection an absolute chore.

To be fair, only most of the weapons are the same. I only counted five shotguns that basically did the same thing. But then there are the 6 or 7 different weapons that freeze the enemy. Seriously. There are at least a half dozen weapons that do exactly the same thing in the same amount of time as one another. Their inclusion is completely unnecessary.

Personally, I'm rather surprised nobody talked about how powerful most of the enemies in AEOD were. Then again, I kind of see WildWeasel's grievances with this one after playing with the latest version after a while. (The buttloads of me-too weapons, for one)

In the end, I prefer Scoredoom over AEOD now, because at least I can challenge myself to get a high score on many of the megawads such as Epic 2. (which I'll be playing through really soon, as I need a break from the slaughter megawads)

How should they? I guess most people loaded it, started a map, IDDQD, IDKFA and check out the weapons. After 15 minutes of 'fun', ESC, 'Quit Game', Yes. End of story.

Congrats to all Cacoward winners and happy birthday DOOM!

On a related note, I finally played No Rest for the Living last night. My god! I had no idea those levels were that good. Detailed but not too detailed, super-fun gameplay with traps and unexpected occurences, clever secrets, great flow, hard but not a 2000 monster Hell Revealed slaughterfest, most of all they felt like DOOM...dammit I wish I could map like that.

And who knows, maybe I'm wrong. But that's extremely unlikely because I'm always right.

Especially with the inclusion of the adverb "only," that sentence is enough to make sure AEoD never gets on my hard drive.

That was kind of the point.

I've been playing through Doom 2 with AEoD because I am a masochist. There are five shotguns and the only one I got any use out of seems to have disappeared after an update. Glad they fixed that.

I want to play a drinking game with it where you take a shot every time you see an original Doom monster. This happens maybe once or twice per map and if you're not holding the fire button down at all times, you might catch it.

Aren't drinking games supposed to make you drunk?

Playing through an iwad level doesn't take long. You could be doing ten shots an hour. An obvious one would be to take a shot every time you see a monster from a specific series. Heretic and/or Hexen would get you drunk quickest. Realm667 bestiary monsters would kill you.

Do you think you'll be around for Doom's 18th, 21st, or 25th birthday? Do you think we'll be around?[/quote]
Sure. Doom is becoming sort of a arcade game with a hint of tactical strategy; making its own genre. The player's moving speed exceeding that of monsters, using infighting (provided sufficiently populated maps), and dumb monsters in general, all that is part of a very unique kind of gameplay otherwise not found.

@Hirogen2 - And thanks to Bilbohicks, Scoredoom gives Doom a more arcade-ish feel to it, though you'll be racing to beat the par time. I understand if mods like this aren't your thing, though.

I loved unloved.

also, the music in the hub/normal world sounds alot like the non atmospheric tunes in silent hill (a plus, IMO. not that the atmos ones are bad but...)

also stronghold is visually probably the best WAD ive ever seen.

Im glad to see Aeons of death get it.

I mean yeah, I enjoy just for its... oddness... but really, its only purpous is to spice up of a megawad you don't like much. really, why bother makeing it?

Well, somebody had to, so here's my "Still Bored?" map:

http://www.phobus.servegame.com/doom/ph_quik5.zip

It does everything the description says, and a bit more. Fairly small map (55 monsters in UV, 44 on HMP, 31 in HNTR) - enjoy! It'll be up on /idgames soonish, probably.

This map was twisted in all meanings of the word. It was fun, short and simple, just the way I like it.

spoiler - highlight to read:

PROTIP: Do not enter the room where you "destroy some big computer", without getting the rocket launcher first.

Thanks, you two!

I fully endorse the spoilered PROTIP, having tested ignoring it myself.

When I told my friend this year that he shared the same birthday as DOOM (except he was born in 1990) he said "Now it is old enough to play itself." I had to laugh.
