The best game music

Recommended Posts

What do you think is the best game music, or do you like it at all.

I like castlevania (all of them, well not castlevania64) music most, it's exellent. Other games that have great music are:

Wanderers from ys III
Megaman (especially II and some of the tracks in III)
Final Fantasies (VI has the best music)
Sonic 1 and 2
A couple of songs in Alundra
Doom1
A few songs in Donkey Kong series on SNES
Monkey Island title
Shadow of the beast III (Amiga)
And many other games I cannot remember now, most on nes.

As you can see, there aren't many new games in my list: that's because they have boring music or not music at all. I really miss the old days when games had good music. Nowadays they often have ambient sounds. BORING...

I thought Unreal and Half-Life both had excellent music (also the add-ons/follow-ups to these games). Deus Ex had some good stuff too. I sometimes listen to the music from these games even when not playing them.

The soundtrack for American McGee's Alice is superb!

Amazon.com
Chris Vrenna's soundtrack to the American McGee's Alice video game is fittingly twisted. Sounds created with toy instruments and percussion, music boxes, clocks, doors, and sampled female voices (including Jack Off Jill singer Jessicka) are manipulated into nightmarish soundscapes. A harpsichord and a clock ticking over a bed of rhythmic effects invoke a sense of Victorian horror, while also playing off of modern motifs. Fans of the game and connoisseurs of dark and spooky music will be delighted by Vrenna's surreal score.
--Bryan Reesman

This quote is the best way to describe the music. Twisted, spooky and ambient. It's lovely.

This first list is for just down right awesome music

Wipeout
Wipeout 2097 (or Wipeout XL to you Americans)
Wip3out
Medal of honour
Medal of honour: Underground
Medal of honour: Allied Assault
Alien Vs Predator
Alien Vs Predator 2
Jedi Knight (it's like the "best of" Star Wars music)
System shock 2
Thief: The dark project
Thief: The metal age
Deus Ex.

And this list is just for good seen setting music:

Doom PSX
Doom 64
Quake
Silent hill
Resident evil

and this is just for catchy tunes

Wolfenstein 3D
Wolfenstein: Spear of Desteny
Goldeneye
The Ultimate Doom
Doom II
Final Doom
The Secret of Monkey Island
Monkey Island 2: Le Chucks Revenge
The Curse of Monkey Island
Escape from Monkey Island
Perfect Dark
Super Mario World

that's all I could think of for now.

P.S. There is nothing wrong with ambient sounds; badly timed music can sometimes make a complete mess of the atmosphere, where your better of with silence, or well used ambient sounds

I never got to listen much of alice's music. I bought the game but my computer couldn't handle the craphics even on lowest settings :( playing it was pain and suffering. Even Max Payne worked better and the minimum system requirements are smaller in Alice.

Ambient sounds CAN be good and atmosfearic, but I think that they are overused. And I wish they would include music more often in games, you can always turn the music off if you don't like it.

Actraiser
Castlevania 4
Ogre Battle
Super Metriod (especially Lower Norfair)
Final Fantasy II (4)
Final Fantasy 5
Final Fantasy III (6)
Chrono Trigger
Surprisingly, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest has a few decent ones, although some are too short, making them too repetitive.
Lufia (namely the Fortress of Doom music)

Then there's Doom, Doom 2, Heretic, and Hexen of course.

DDR clanners are the scariest creatures ever spawned of Creation. A couple of them showed up at the CGC, drawn in by the promise of a DDR tourney and prizes provided by NVIDIA and Bawls. They were prety easy to point out; skinny guys with bad hair among a group of overweight/bespectacled/Chinese guys. That, and the fact that they kicked the asses of all challengers. :/
