I have that exact same problem! Only I only have 64 megs RAM (stop laughing, now!), and Scandisk and Defrag worked perfectly fine before I took my box to the computer shop. Go figure, heh.

I found the reason why the computer was even slower than it's supposed to be: the computer was infected with the system resource eating Wyx virus, and the crappy antivirus program on there couldn't detect it even though Wyx is something like five years old.
