2007 Anticipations

Maybe they had higher expectations than just another generic FPS.

Since Doom id has been an engine company, not a game company. I didn't play Quake when it came out, but did a couple of years ago and that game has not aged well. It feels like a disjointed tech-demo for true-3d, and not the exulted legend people feel it is. The gameplay is like Doom, but it plod along without the energy or speed of its predecessor. The art is somewhat haphazard, and the various monsters don't even follow a consistent theme.

I rather enjoyed single player actually, although many did not for many of the reasons you say. However, the game has always been extremely popular for multiplayer, especially CTF and Team Fortress. I have many fond memories of my days in clan Nerd playing as a medic or demoman (and later as a soldier). Good times.

I haven't played multi, so that may be a strength of Quake. Anyway, after Doom II id began to concern themselves more with developing the game engine rather than the content.

One of the two; like DOOM it is excellent for speed running.

Well, I think the Quake 2 engine is quite similar to the one used for Quake, so they couldn't have put too much effort into the engine (unless they forgot everything and wrote it again).

BTW, for me, at this low framepersecond moment, Quake 1 beats Doom 3 at its own game. Nothing scarier than a roaring fiend leaping at savage lengths literally killing you if jumping on you. It's more "gratifying" to be killed by their ferocity than by your awkwardness (something kinda true in D3).

Quake 2 is kind of an oddball, it really isn't ground-breaking in anyway (except for the themes it is similar in both gameplay and engine features to Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, which was released earlier the same year). Although some people will argue with me about this, I would say Goldeneye (released about a month before Quake 2) has superior gameplay, i.e. not Doom rehashed.

You mean another game pawned off by id to a 3rd party developer. It's really amazing how far id has gone down the crap chute. It's been over 10 years since Romero left and they haven't come up with even one new title in all that time. All they've done is made two completely disconnected sequels to Quake and an embarrassing Doom remake that isn't anything like the original game, and sold out all of their titles since Keen to 3rd party developers, without even bothering to oversee their work. That and managed to fire anyone with any creativity while promoting a guy who made crappy Doom 2 maps full of SS Nazis to lead designer.

/me stands up and applauds

Now let us hope to God that it doesn't turn out like Angel of Darkness did.

You didn't know about Tomb Raider Legend? Crystal Dynamics is making the Tomb Raider games now.

Lets hope it doesn't turn out like legend. fantastic graphics, but horribly dumbed down (and short) so yeah im putting TR 10th Anniversary on my list also, along with nfs11 (it's been confirmed) Test drive Unlimited (though all ready being bashed in some circles) and of course quake wars. that's about all (and all on pc)

What the hell, am I the only one who hasn't heard of this Bio-Shock game? I didn't know the internet had anything other than porn.

In 2007 I hope to actually have a band, instead of just talking about it. I have the technology now, so there isn't any reason for me to NOT get this shit done.

Also:

Getting an XBox 360 for the express purpose of getting:
Gears of War
Perfect Dark Zero
Quake IV
The Half Life 2 Bundle (Half Life 2, HL2:EP1 and 2, Team Fortress 2 and Portal)
Halo 3

Love live the first person shooter.

Also, the new Ghost In The Shell comes out this year. w00t w00t.

I love you.

To Johnatone, Quake 4 sucks ass on the 360, major framerate issues I hear. But Prey plays solidly on this console, and so does Call of Duty 3. Tom Clancy's Rainbow Vegas or something also kicks ass.

Heh, well that sucks, I guess I could upgrade my computer for the cash I'll end up spending on all these things. Thanks for point out two FPSs I forgot. I think I should expand my gaming interests a bit though. Nah.

No problem, but as far as PREY goes, it pretty much resembles a medium quality 800 resolution of the game on a PC, of course with absolutely no frame hiccups.

For some reason I actually bought a preorder for Burning Crusade. We'll see if I can actually get a copy though.

Please don't let them fuck this up!

Unless you like the 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Marcus Nispel's feature track record isn't the most promising out there.

Though it could be worse.
