Am I doing it wrong?
No, if it works for you. What I was trying to say is that there's a difference between a FPS where there are actual modeled bullet physics that force you to lead/elevate your aim depending on speed/distance of the target (e.g. Counterstrike, Battlefield series) and one which is supposed to be purely hitscan (Doom, Quake series, Wolf 3D, perhaps others (?)), where the "leading" is purely due to a comms artifact.
In the former you have to lead because you have to due to the physics themselves, by a predictable and computable amount (which also holds for single player). In the latter there's an entirely random and unpredictable factor, which is also subject to glitching/abuse, unless there's some timebase correction/synchronous network code to even out latency differences.

No one has 2k/s Dial-up?
I once tried fucking around with modem init strings to force a lower connection speed...and surprise surprise, most providers' equipment won't connect below 28.8 kbps. So you can forget that acoustic coupler and/or 2kbps C64 modem you've been saving for dire times :-(
