Birds in the air, they never chirped the same
Slobs in bowling alleys no they never burped the same
They came to cry, all shocked with disbelief
A broken mass of millions all drowning in their grief
She was just an innocent "How could you God?" they cried
The day, that Farrah Fawcett died
Throughout the globe
Every Chinese man and Turk
Their unifying symbol, they really loved her work
But who's to blame?
No one make a move
Until I found out who did this, nobody leaves the room
She was just an innocent, "How could you God?" they cried
The day that Farrah Fawcett died
They say the road was icy, but that just don't add up
A bushy haired intruder, another government coverup
A drug related overdose, a hunting accident
Death at the hands of another... I'll bet!
First JFK, and then we lost the King
Thank God it must be over now, they say bad things come in three
But still I ache, the world has lost a friend
I'll trade all of my viewmaster reels, to see her once again
It was the day I heard my mama cry
It was the day I hope you lied
It was the day I prayed to god you lied
She was just an innocent, "How could you God?" they cried
The day that Farrah Fawcett died

Had that song stuck in my head all day. As far as Jacko, it's a little weird. I always figured he would be there for the next 30 years at least to crop up in bizarre news articles. I never really thought he had sex with children, I think he was just a man with severe mental disorders who never wanted to grow old. Peter Pan syndrome I guess. And as such, he kept young friends, and I doubt he saw them in a sexual light, he just liked spending time with young children because he thought he was still a little boy. Still not alright, or normal, and completely fucked up, but I doubt he molested any children. I still don't feel bad about his death though, his life really had no effect on me whatsoever, and I can't see why people cream about his music, but I feel bad for his children. Mainly because they are named Prince Michael I, Prince Michael II, and Paris Michael.

Despite his fucked up life, he was at one time the coolest motherfucker on the planet, ruling the 80s and 90s radio. The energy that he puts into his song and its performance is nothing short of amazing. His live Billie Jean performance:

His offstage conduct is questionable but won't stop me from paying respect where it's due. Thriller is the shit. He raised pop to a new level. Elvis Presley 2.0. RIP MJ.

I'll probably never understand why people actually liked this mentally disturbed idiot and his shitty music.

I sure won't miss him.

Can you honestly say that with the Billie Jean video above proving that he was neither an idiot nor had shitty music?

Billie Jean was probably his one shining moment. But that was before he started devolving. :D

Nevertheless, everything from 'Bad' onwards was just awful.

I also think the topic title should be altered

"Michael Jackson dead at 50"

I second this motion.

I never cared for his music, and never had an opinion on what his relationship to little boys was--as to whether or not the accusations were true. I also never realized he had a Peter Pan complex. I suppose I'm more inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt, that he preferred the company of innocent people who wouldn't hurt him the way adults did.

Bank said:

So was O.J. Simpson... although I can't find where Bank said this.. I'm just going off Lüt's lead.

Although I didn't care for his flavor of music and dance moves, I can recognize he was the biggest pop icon, the only other person at the same level of Elvis Presley. I don't know what that says about me... I never cared for Elvis Presley's music either!

Is that a reference to the old DOS game 'bouncing babies'? If only I could get my hands on an old amber monochrome monitor.

I think it's kind of sad how he died so young. While he was messed up in the head in his later years, he was still able to have some good music in his heyday. He will be missed by me as a great musician and pop icon.

One question now though, Who gets the rights to all of those Beatle songs?

Nobody, the Beatles should have it. If not, they should be public domain but we know the corrupt rich labels will fight tooth and nail for them not to be.

It is curious because while many rock or pop artists seemed to want to refuse to be anything but teens or young adults, Jackson was pretty much incapable of going past childhood. Adapting to extreme wealth and popularity from relative poverty, with all those meddling hands, from business or family, must have hit his vulnerable mind pretty hard. In the end, he was pretty much a morbid character, like a Frankenstein monster of the pop era. His aesthetics, from what he did to himself, to his music and his moves on stage, were, in my opinion, rather grotesque, like a nervous and embellished child-clown, which fits as an on-stage expression of the above.

I'm always amazed (and occasionally envious) of people who are able to put in that kind of energy to the things they do. Occasionally I can find cause to be passionate about things, but it takes a real gift to have that kind of passion be sustainable like his.

Though perhaps 'gift' is a bit too optimistic, in this case. Any talent like his has got to have a price to pay in some fashion.

He really can't be blamed for what he was, though.

All the people on the Fark music threads were saying that he would never make it through the tour. I don't think any of them suspected that it would end like this though.

I'm not really a fan of MJ. I liked the albums Bad and Thriller, but aside from that, he never really made anything that good. His life after the 80s was just kind of sad and I'm actually kind of glad he died, because you know he was just going to continue going downhill.

I'm also interested in what's going to happen with the Beatles songs. I kind of always hated him for buying it all out from under Paul, George, and Yoko like he did, especially since he was previously good friends with Paul. I'm not really sure of the legal status of the songs right now, as I heard he gave rights to a few corporations to do with the songs as they will. We'll see...

Sony owns (for the most part) the rights to the Beatles songs. Sony acquired the rights when MJ sold his material and the entire catalogue of recording privileges to them some time ago. This was achieved by ATV merging with Sony for a lump sum of 95 million back in 1995.

However, MJ still owned a portion of the publishing rights to the Beatles catalogue but will most likely be totally bought out by Sony.

Things enter the public domain 70/75 (cant remember which) years after the death of the originators*, as some of the Beatles are still alive that won't be happening for a while.

*-Ideally, i beleive if companies own things they can get pissy about it. For instance i beleive Egmont/Fleetway/IPC/Whatever they are this week own the rights to the character Sexton Blake still, even though the original creator died in 1898. I get around this restriction for my self published comics by ignoring it.

In the USA:
If the rights belong to the author: life + 70 years.
If the rights belong to a corporation: either 95 years after publication or 120 years after creation, whichever happens first.

Also note that Walt Disney's Plane Crazy was published in 1928. So expect the copyright terms to be increased again sometime before 2023. As long as the Walt Disney Company is alive, nothing younger than Mickey Mouse will be allowed to lapse into public domain, mark my words.

Yeah, that was only marginally more interesting than the "Kat died" phone call.

So I heard some new info on the radio this morning. Apparently, Michael Jackson is going to put Tupac's post-mortem success to shame. For one, it was revealed that he has over 200 unreleased tracks (that apparently he will be giving full rights to over to his kids). Secondly, there was apparently extensive footage of the rehearsals for the concert and those will likely be released to film or DVD. Speaking of the concert, they might do it anyway, possibly with Madonna standing in in his place. Third, Neverland Ranch is going to become a Graceland-like exhibit, though I guess much more bizarre.

Another bit of news is that apparently his kids aren't biologically his or their mother's. Their mother was a surrogate for donated egg and sperm. Yay, more weirdness from his neck of the woods.

One white woman standing in for another :P Seriously tho, they'd better come up with some way to put the concert on. There's something like US$500M of tickets already sold, that's an awful lot of money to give back.
