Watch the movies Labyrinth and Dark Crystal. Pretty amazing young adult fantasy movies done by Jim Henson with design by Brian Fraud (at least on Labyrinth).

BEST USE OF MUPPETS EVER

I don't agree with your other contention, however. Increasing the visual fidelity of the images isn't enough to make them look "real." The uncanny valley will still be a problem due to the issues involved with capturing motion (especially for something like animals - remember the flak that Beowful got for the horses?).

Perhaps, but our use for CGI/Animatronics is almost always focused on fantastical entities that we can't quite judge on account of having no real life parallel. Perfectly "realistic" Aliens can come come years and years before perfectly realistic (note no quotes) people.

I think the blue aliens look cool, especially in action. I really like their tribal look. They kind of look like thundercats. Thundercats are awesome.

I don't know, I think Cameron will do a fine job. There isn't a movie of his that I didn't enjoy.

Just because there's CGI in a movie doesn't mean it's crap. Transformers 2 was crap, yeah, because the movie was about the CGI. When you use CGI to have a purpose in a story, or to bring an (alien) world alive that you can't do in real life, CGI can have a positive effect on a film. Take Dark City for example. Lots of CG, but the CG was used with a purpose.

@david_a: I agree with what you're saying about the hype. I'm just expecting a great science fiction movie and I know that I won't be watching it in 3-d, since none of the theaters around here have installed 3-d screens and I doubt they will spend the money to install one.

uhhhhhhh

This related to the cartoon with a guy with blue arrows on him? I've seen shedloads of hentai of it on -chans but know next to nothing about what it actually is **.

Also Puppets / Robots etc are far better simply because they are "really there". A cheao crapply-made anamatronic will still look more tangiable than something added by a computer afterwards. Also it's a hell of a lot easier on the actors i'd imagine.

That's Avatar: the Last Airbender, supposedly the best American-made anime (though I never watched it). The live-action movie of that is apparently being done by M. Night Shayamalan, last I heard.

After listening to almost everyone go on about how great this was, Fran and I got curious enough to go see it.

It was pretty good. Not some epic timeless space opera like most people make it out to be, but it was enjoyable at about a level of Starship Troopers and other "just good fun" sci-fi you'll watch again from time to time.

There are cool mech things and heaps of good fights, plus almost constant boobs so what's not to like? With Sigourney Weaver starring and Michelle Rodriguez playing an aviator-glasses-wearing pilot there's obviously a small tribute to in there Aliens too.

I intentionally saw it in "not 3D" because I was more interested in seeing if the movie stood up well on its own, rather than relying on flashy visuals. That being said, we'll go see it in 3D again next weekend because it will look impressive and that's not something you can see at home.

Safe to say Spiderman is the only mediocre film James Cameron has ever made.

Gee, I've been wondering where's the Doomworld thread for this... In any case, it were okay and realistic if the humans won (if the movie ended before that stampeding). No matter how much you pray to gods of nature, technology is more important, unobtanium has to be collected, for research if not for anything. Too bad movies NEED to have happy endings and black-white characters, needlessly portraying humans as greedy bastards come from a really polluted world to destroy another.

The blue people look just like the Heretic 2 guy!

I had a strong deja vu on this, however. But it beat those movies, "District 9" and "Surrogates", in quality, hands down.

Just mind the morality cliches. It is above average, especially if you watch 3d.

I saw it in 3D. Nice visuals. The movie more or less is, "Dances with Furries in space." There was some girls giggling in the theater when Neytiri was cradling Jake's human form in her arms. Which turned a tender scene into a rule34 in the making. LOL.

? That was Sam Raimi... I don't consider Titanic, True Lies, or The Abyss to be winners, though.

I saw it. It was unfortunately exactly what I expected. The 3D felt unnecessary to me . The movie itself was just... mediocre. The part where he was still bumbling around trying to be accepted by the blue people was practically offensive - I've already seen 1000 versions of this, don't force me to go through another one!!

And despite the 2:45 running time, I didn't feel any particular connection to the characters. I was a bit sad when the pilot girl died, but that part made no sense: she went from "I didn't sign up for this" to martyrdom? I don't understand why she flew the copter right in front of the gunship either...

I think it's sad that in a $300 million movie, this collection of rehashes and clichés is the best they could come up with.

I saw it in 3D. I kind of wish I hadn't, as for some reason I just can't focus on a "3D" image when things are moving. I dunno if it's just RealD or what. Anyway, I posted my worthless opinion in another thread

DuckReconMajor said:
Story was horribly predictable. People say the effects make up for the bland story but honestly it felt like the whole place was stripped right out of World of Warcraft (he just picked the places no one goes to anymore so no one would notice). On the bright side, the final battle was pretty cool, and Michelle Rodriguez was in it (but they made her side with the tree-huggers. Ugh.)

District 9 was the best film I have seen in a long time. The reason I bring it up here tho, is coz I think that is how CGI should be used. To enhance the realism of a film. Not to use reality to enhance the CGI of a film.

I will probably see Avatar tho, just coz it will be fun to grab a bunch of friends and at least see it on the big screen with them.

Having watched it myself in 2D I had no issues with the CGI or anything (looked real enough to me). However, the story had a few problems that I'd usually sum up as being typcial Disney (pointless extra love story, goodie-two-shoes main character after he's been shown the error of his ways, death and loss of many main characters to emphasise how evil the enemies are...), were it a Disney film.

If you're the sort of person who only plays new games because old games don't look good enough, I reckon this is for you. Otherwise you'll probably just find it to be an average to good film that could probably have been better if the story was a little more imaginative.

I liked the actors and futuristic techie stuff though, and there were no HUGE flaws. One girl I know tried to explain to me that I only felt the love story was pointless because I'm not a "cute" person - in that I don't personally care for animals that seem cuddly or people getting all lovey-dovey. Maybe my heart of stone is to blame, but I still felt there was no need for the love story.

The thing that really struck me about the movie was how mind-blowingly mediocre the whole thing was. I don't really have any specific complaints, but on the other hand, not a single thing about it was in any way creative or unique. I suppose that in itself is a criticism, but I dunno, I felt it was a very well-done version of the story, even if I had already seen it like a million times before.

Yeah, even the action scenes left me a bit cold. For example, the Rohan calvary charge in Return of the King was 1000x more thrilling than the Avatar equivalent. Fairly odd since James Cameron has previously been untouchable for action scenes, but this was just... not that great.

The entire message of the movie was "take better care of the environment", NOT "technology is evil and primitives rule".

If you managed to confuse the two, you are a fucking moron and should never comment on political bias ever again.

Of course Avatar has a message: James Cameron makes

A movie featuring:

-Evil Humans
-Noble Savages
-Main character becoming said noble savage
-Evil corporate executives
-Nature being portrayed as good
-Blue Smurfs being portrayed as superior to Humans
to make the kiddies happy, and to line his pockets.

Still, I see no "message" in Avatar.
