The Christmas 2009 Thread

Recommended Posts

Enter ye here all thoughts, actions and wishes for the 2009 Christian holiday of commercialism and corporate greed.

My girlfriend got a Retro Gamer magazine, did some folding thing where it makes a tree shape and made some laminated ornaments at work. Behold our Christmas tree!

The Mario star strangely looks photoshopped on but I assure you it's not.

I have no idea what to ask for, if I want something I generally just buy it. I know I'm getting a 4-pack of Blair's Death Sauce which I'm very much looking forward to.

As usual, I'm looking forward to not doing anything at all and just relaxing with family. Everything else (especially presents) is irrelevant.

This. But I might ask for some games or something that I wouldn't normally buy myself.

Christmas is as good as any excuse to eat a lot and get trashed before noon on a weekday. I'll be spending the day with friends and family eating good food, drinking copious amounts of alcohol and playing video games with my brother.

...Well, I would be doing that if my evil corporate overlords weren't making me work that day ...

I haven't really cared all that much about Christmas in recent years. Though it is nice to have an excuse to head home and visit the family, and I do love Christmas music and candy canes and whatnot. I guess really what I mean is that Christmas has lost its materialistic value for me since I grew up, which I guess means I actually finally get Christmas (even though I consider myself an atheist).

Actually, I find it kind of funny that I learned that my parents are giving me an Xbox. I mean, first off, I've never been a big Xbox fan, I never really cared for it, and secondly, I can't help but feel I'm too old for such a present (even though I'm obviously still an avid game player).

I mean basically, at a certain point, you begin to expect only money, or gift cards, or practical items as Christmas presents. Honestly, at least partly because of that, I find the whole thing touching - and even though I haven't been a huge Xbox fan, there are a few Xbox games that I've been wanting to play, so what the heck?

If I had a PS3, I'd ask for demon's souls. But all I got is this lousy PS2 :P

Might drop some hints for some better PS2 games, as they'll be pretty cheap these days, but I'm not very interested in finding them. I got Bard's tale and Viewtiful Joe when I got it, and am borrowing katamari damacy and tales of the abyss from a friend, so I'm good for quite a while since I haven't really played anything on it for a while. Also still have 2 wii titles I would like to finish; tales of symphonia;dawn of a new world and a fire emblem. God of war is basically the only thing I can think of off the top of my head, as I have GTA3 already too ...

Off the console, I can't think of any recent PC games that will run well on my laptop that I like, as it's actually about the best gaming hardware we have (newest desktop is a dell that plays oblivion ok, but I wouldn't like to try fallout 3 on it since my laptop likes to snag after playing an hour, and it's got a geforce8400 laptop equivalent ...). Maybe torchlight, or actually get the diablo chest. I'm so lame for not having that ...

And in physical goods, maybe a new munchkin set or magic;the gathering cards. Haven't played any games of either recently, but I really like em. Maybe some dart-making materials and a nerf gun, since we're having a humans vs. zombie game after Christmas :)

And finally thanks for reading what's probably considered a blog post :P (if you did that is ;)

Katamari Damacy and We Love Katamari are awesomely fun games :D I'm also a fan of Dynasty Warriors, it's like an over-the-shoulder slash-em-up with strategy elements, things you do in one level affect outcomes of later levels.

Know what? A similar thing is happening to me in relation to church, and it makes even less sense. Back when I was little, church was just a boring waste of time - some meaningless thing to be endured. Once I got a little older I started consciously trying to be a Christian, but was always too conflicted by my doubt to enjoy church, and I certainly couldn't find it transcendent. Now I've grown up a bit more, and I'm atheist, and am fully at peace with my view of the universe, therefore I can now go to church and listen to songs and sermons in peace, and therefore find them much more moving and otherworldly than I ever did before.

The only thing that ruins religion is that people are expected to believe it. But that's a topic for another thread I guess.

I'll sum this up by saying that I love Christmas - God is my favourite fictional character.

that's a really interesting approach. How come the dw forums don't have 'like' buttons.

Instead of asking for the usual Xbox 360 this Christmas with Modern Warfail 2 (Sorry, couldn't resist), I'm taking the different approach and getting a Panasonic 3DO for the holidays and 21 games with it. Interactive movies and long FMV sequences, here I come!

And before Maes comes to this thread, I am NOT getting Plumber's don't wear ties. AVGN convinced me not to get that a long time ago. ;)

Looking forward with getting together with my mom and sister, and also getting together with my friends. Oh, and I need to watch Christmas Vacation at some point. It's a long-standing tradition. Other than that, I don't care what else happens.

Actually, thinking about it more, it somewhat makes sense to me. I've actually kind of felt the same way about religion myself recently, despite obviously being an atheist. I think the two might be related. I mean, I can see a lot of crossovers between materialism in Christmas and literalism in religion. It's like, eventually you grow up and come to understand that getting/giving presents isn't what Christmas is about, it's symbolic of the love we get and give to each other. Likewise, I think you can eventually come to realize that religion isn't about God, God is symbolic for how we feel about ourselves and our place in the universe. Eh, you're right, it's a topic for a different thread, pardon me for rambling on.

Heading out to California to see the parents 'n my sisters will be good fun... well, until sister #2 and my father will have their inevitable explosions... plus they better plan something other than having 5 grown-ups together in a 2-BR apartment, or I'm leaving. There probably won't be any present exchanging this year, which frankly, I'm fine with.

Spinning the Jethro Tull Christmas Album tonight and then some Muppet's Christmas Carol.

Heh. I had spent Xmas 2007 doing the 00:00-03:00 sentry shift in a camp 1000 km away from home and sleeping in a bunk inside the camp's gate outpost with other 7 grunts (as a ROC cadet).

One year later, I was spending Xmas 2008 doing watch officer duty in a camp in my hometown, with my own watch officer room and bed. (talk about a fast career, eh?).

For this one, I really don't know, with the new job and all. I'll probably visit my family but other than that, I have nothing to keep me staying and going out in my hometown. In general I don't have very fond memories of the last decade's Xmases, with very few exceptions. They are get-together times but also times of great solitude, somehow :-/

I'll have a lot of free time so I'll map like crazy. Hopefully I'll get a new laptop and maybe new headphones too.

Hmm, that's an interesting take on it. This might help my problem of me not finding any girls I like who aren't serious Christians. Then again, I've never attended a Christian church before. I don't really know what to do in one.

Anyway, Xmas to me has always been a pagan celebration of bringing light to the darkest time of the year. And like any time when you're trying to get away from the cold and dark, you hunker down with your loved ones and do good things for them. :D

My brother got time off work to come back for Christmas. That's present enough for me. He's also bringing absinthe, so it's double win. Christmas to me is more just a traditional time for families to get together. It hasn't been about Jesus, or really gift giving, for quite awhile. It's just a decided time for families to get together, enjoy what we have in our lives, and have fun. But I'm a filthy atheist, so enjoying what I have while I still have it seems more important than worshiping a dead guy with delusions of grandeur.

Oh man, christmas is going to be so fucking sick this year. I'm going to eat sooooo much acid. It will be epic.

I'm going to write my christmas letter to santa!!!

Dear Satan,

Is it true that your belly is a bowl full of jelly? I have been a super good boy this year. I only accidentally let my hand slip when I stabbed Brian; I didn't mean it, but he just wouldn't shut up! I said I was sorry like 4 times! Oh yeah and I only wet the bed 13 times this whole year.

I don't want much this year, but I have only a very few special requests. I want a pony and my two front teeth and a monster truck and a submarine and a dildo and pubic hair and a chainsaw and the ability to cast spells and the ability to breathe fire. I also want a zillion dollars and I want Mongolia and a mermaid and L. Ron Hubbard.

P.S. If I don't get what I want, I will fucking kill you.

Love,
Billy

I feel like I should frame my last post and hang it on my wall. "Creaphis' Wall of Fame." It will be honoured through history as that one good post I wrote.

Speaking of unglamorous Xmases, the one of 1999 wasn't too hot either in the sense that I didn't go to anywhere glamorous or "hip". Well, the actual Xmas festivity was OK actually, as well as what preceded it and what followed.

However the "Y2K" new's year eve a few days later was nothing special: from what I recall, I spent it watching some fucked up movie that had a dozen of drunk cowboys by the fire and a bunch topless whores running around (no, I'm not making that up). Before that, we had gone skeet shooting with my father (basically we went to a landfill and tossed glass bottles in the air and tried to shatter them with our Baikal O/U shotgun).
