Here's one of my examples, in which something older, is better than anything new, in a growing YouTube hobby I part take in:
=====================================================================
I stumbled onto something I haven't seen in Leominster Hopital in about 30 YEARS, being the floor plans were severely altered when the hopital expanded in 2000.
It was easy to get to before then, now, it's hidden away, but I found it.

It is an an original 1950's Payne Traction Elevator, complete with original hall stations, original controls, and ...:drools:... original relay controller.

You don't find treasures like this everyday, because they are either modernized (sometimes raped in the process), or ripped out and replaced altogether.

If you like ANYTHING classic, and mechanical, you might actually like this!
Check it out: ----> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82d35Zd313Y

It's moments like this, that you're glad to find a classic, in a world full of new and badly modernized vertical transporters. Too rare nowadays.
=====================================================================

This gets me thinking: What do YOU like, as in cars, electronics, or the like, do YOU wish wasn't "improved" on, which ultimately just doesn't compare with yesterday's older models?

The original part of George's post is, but he decided it was so good it was worth posting twice!

But yeah, FPS games have been weaker lately.

Edit: Wait, the original thread from Blogs was helled, so I guess he didn't learn his lesson.

Call me when Fiffy decides to film himself in a bathysphere. I hear the Splicers are getting lonely.

Minis

Computerisation in cars... yeah it was alright for working out your MPG easily, but having computers control the throttle? Well, i guess Toyota owners discovered what happens when you do that. Luckily my own Toyota is from 1991 so it's throttle is controlled by a cable that's either intact and working, or broken and not.

Safety in cars... what do you want? A tank? At my work there's an original Renault Twingo, sold as a 4 seater, and an new Toyota Aygo, sold as (effectively) a 2 seater... they're the same size!

"Improved" child porn laws that include cartoons (and by that they of course mean any anime with nudity in, because it's from another country and thus "the other". Of course they tried to justify it by claiming that peadophiles were 'escaping' by using the posterise photoshop filter to turn real CP into 'cartoons' ...yeah right, and the police couldn't tell the difference?). Yeah but it's not real is it... yeah but it's not real is it... yeah but it's not real is it...

Comics with "emotions" and "hard-hitting issues". They already fucked up Dan Dare and Battler Britton... what will they ruin next? Also colour does not automatically equal good. I'll stick with Commando... not even the logo has changed since 1961 and it's full of whiter than white heroes shooting the dastardly Nazis.

Decompressed comics with "cinematic" storytelling... yeah there's a reason why it's called cinematic - it belongs in the cinema! I want wall-of-text captions and stories that belt along with big events and reveltions in each instalment. Also: text stories in comics! The 'comics' i collect were 90-100% text stories, but they died a death later on, though some of the Boys' Own genre such as Victor had a mixture for a few years after, even that had ended by around 1970.

I agree with that one. Since DooM, pretty much, it's been downhill ever since.
Newer games are more about Eye-Candy, than gameplay. The first 2 DooM did both just fine. Although some might question DooM II, I say,. it's still good, and probably the last good FPS (Quake was good, but not quite up to DooM standards).

To be fair, "fly by wire" is already used in commercial airliners for two decades, and yeah, even there there have been some accidents attributed to the computer rejecting the pilot's input. However the main difference is that in aircraft there are usually redundant computers running different implementations of the control program in parallel, and then a decision is made based only on a majority vote or even just on a full consensus. The computer systems used in cars today are not redundant, and as it seems not even as rigorously stable as those used in aircraft.

Well, that's kinda of a thorny argument. The old Fiat 500 was sold as a 4-seater as well (with 5 passengers possible) but it's the most unsafe car ever to have an accident with. Sure I'd prefer some more safety measures, even if that means making the car bigger.

About what "improved" stuff I don't care for: in nutshell, whatever is revealed to be more demand and trend driven, and what is ultimately more convenient for the producers rather than the consumers.

Examples of this include pre-paid card payphones, digital TV, phasing out of VCRs and cassette tapes as recording mediums, even when nothing comparable in ease of use has been proposed (MiniDisc and DCC pretty much failed in replacing the cassette. Video DVD recorders may actually be OK, if used with DVD-RWs, but I don't know if they're as easy to use as a VCR).

Digital TV and pre-paid phone cards are both examples of how to make selling more channel licenses/collecting money more convenient for telco authorities (win-win for them) while the consumer is actually in a grey area.

If it were just the elevator thingy.
It follows the exact same thing as the other posts here.

Snarboo: The reason it (original Blogged format) got Helled, was it had "Georgef551" as the creator, Period.

StevieCybernetic Sayeth:

What is your deal with elevators? I understand that its your hobby...but, isn't that kind of a boring hobby?

It's only boring when you have to wait for one. There's a lot of techical aspects, not just getting a simple ride.

Deathbringer brings game to the table:

Minis

Don't remember them, but chances are, you're right. :)

Luckily my own Toyota is from 1991 so it's throttle is controlled by a cable that's either intact and working, or broken and not.

I'm no fan of this, either. The last thing I'd like to have happen is the CPU to glitch, and have the electronic steering fail, epsecially on a sharper curve, on a busy road. ((SHUDDERS))
Toyota, Moving Foward....at 100MPH.

Safety in cars... what do you want? A tank? At my work there's an original Renault Twingo, sold as a 4 seater, and an new Toyota Aygo, sold as (effectively) a 2 seater... they're the same size!

I have to say, more is better here. Too many idiots driving wrecklessly in their big pickup trucks, and giant SUVs.

Over here, it's "For Better, or Worse" (Canadian import). It actually has a progressing timeline, unlike most strips, where everyone stays the same age forever.

Classic movies - if they're not old enough to be colourized (an abominable practice) they're being "re-interpreted" by whatever ham actors happen to be flavour of the month.

Star Wars. Wouldn't it have been so much nicer if an Ewok had drunkenly tossed a bomb into that bonfire at the end of Episode VI? No more fan made sequels.

Remixes of video game soundtracks, especially MIDI tracks, usually aren't up to par. Especially because they replace the fat-sounding drum machine with some sampled dance beat, and soften up all the instruments so they blur together, and it ends up sounding like some lounge pop shit. I prefer the cheesy old MIDI sound.

The only thing off the top of my head right now is the use of CGI in films. More specifically, though... 3D in films. Holy shit, what asshole started this trend needs to take a stroll down an elevator shaft... into some bullets.

I'm listening to Yasunori Mitsuda's jazz fusion rendition of the Chrono Trigger soundtrack right now, and it is balls awesome.

Anyway, let's see here...

Cars should be made like they were in the 80s. Back then, they were solid and could withstand any accident. These days they have "crumple zones" as a manner of "safety measure", but these crumple zones just make it so you have to buy new parts (from the manufacturer) whenever you get into a minor accident. Older cars could take a 30 MPH hit and get a dent at the worst, now it will cost you your entire side paneling. Also, they didn't have fucking GPS, TVs, or any of that bullshit in them.

Album mixing. Pushing the amplitude of every track to the maximum does not make for a good sound. :/

Practically everything.

But automotive designs most of all...
Back in 1990 I thought new cars were starting to look ridiculous. Obviously, that turned out to be just the tip of the iceberg.

The crap they're churning out these days makes a '94 Sunbird look cool by comparison!

What the FUCK is the deal with these huge rims they put on everything?! I haven't seen one example where it didn't make the vehicle look utterly retarded. Do people want their cars to look like exaggerated HotWheels (for yuppies)?

I think Fiffy deserves a custom title that involves elevators. With all the talking and discussion coming from him on those subjects, I do believe he earned such.

"The elevator guy"

And with the subject....remakes of movies..leave the classics alone ffs and stop coming up with half-assed prequels or sequels to such movies that make no sense to the original.

Same with shooter games, it all seems they're just cookie cutter crap since 1996.

Shitty move remakes/sequels/prequels have been around forever. Look at fantasy/horror stuff from the 40s for a good example.

I'll keep my crumple zones. The point is to protect guys like me who have to get ferried around in your stupid cars because a bunch of old people decided it was a great plan to build sprawling suburbs. I don't give a shit what happens to people's cars in comparison to their occupants.

I wouldn't mind ring tones being stuck back where they were in the days of olde. Tinny MIDI and beeps were better than American Idol and hip-hop. On the other hand, since I can use MP3s I tend to customize my ringtones based on who's calling (even though I only use silent mode now).

What I really wish is people would again ignore the terrorists. They win when you make up a thousand rules that only hurt the good guys. It's a bit like DRM.

Even worse: raping an old movie or show.

The Honeymooners. Great show. The movie totally raped it of it's value. Never cared to see it, because of that.
==================================
Doom2Day's turn:

The dollar.

You can barely buy a loaf of bread these days with a dollar.

Just be glad we're not revisiting the rampant inflation rates of the early 80's. Think it's worthless now?

Furniture.

Particle board is too common these days.

True. Someone I know bought a beautiful bedroom set, and the bed broke TWICE, in two different spots, because the particle board split apart. Not it's held together with upgly wood blocks. At least the bedspread hides the awful truth.
===================================
Ninjalah has a good one!

Improved things? I think TV should have been left alone and stop trying to cross over with the internet. 90's TV was great.

I liked 80's TV better, not that 90's was bad, it was just corny enough to be amusing.
I don't like the intergration either. TV should be just that. This is why God invented computers for: the Internet. (1969, on)
===================================
Mr. Chris has a winner:

And with the subject....remakes of movies..leave the classics alone ffs and stop coming up with half-assed prequels or sequels to such movies that make no sense to the original.

That's because Hollywood was too lazy to try and come up with new ideas for awhile. I even remember on the news that they were pondering if Hollywood finally ran out of new ideas, being remakes in 2009 were a major glut, and eyesore, in theaters.
I'm glad it's over, per-se.

The worst concept was the Star Wars Episodes "1 through 3". Lucas was despirate to make money, nothing else.
===================================
kristus brings back a not-so-fond memory:

I don't care for "new improved flavor" on the packaging to stuff I enjoy eating. Because it never is.

For those old enough to remember, how about that "New Coke"? No wonder the "Classic Formula" came so quick. They're missing the main ingreedient, though. :)
