Agreed! Jack Daniel's Black Label offers a quick, sweet finish. Nice oak notes, a hint of spices, and perhaps a touch of cedar mingle with a warm caramel finish that gives way to white pepper and walnuts.

All in all, when tasting Jack Daniel's Black Label it becomes readily apparent why this whiskey is one of the top selling spirits in the world. Quality, consistency and approachability are the hallmarks of Jack Daniels and Black Label is the flagship marque for this famous company.

Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Select
I never cared much for Jack Daniel's (or any other Tennessee whiskey), but a friend of mine has a bottle of this that we're supposed to crack open when I see him in a couple of weeks...

Heh, the picture of that truck full of boxes just reminds me of that episode of Bottom where they stole all the boxes of Malibu.

Hells yeah. That's why it's a staple of gamers. At one point, pretty much everyone in my D&D group had a Crown Royal dice bag. The only reason they stopped is because a friend of mine started making custom dice-shaped bags for everyone. I still use my special edition Crown Royal bag with checks down the side that I found on top of the bar trash when I was working at Red Lobster.

I got 12-year-old Glenfiddich for Christmas. Not very expensive scotch, but I like it better than my $85 bottle of Dalwhinnie. JD's Single Barrel is still my favorite by far, though.

I bought some JD Single Barrel a week ago and it is quite good. It's very earthy and reminds me of Eagle Rare 10yo which so far is my favourite bourbon.

Anyone that hates on it because of the name is an idiot. Drink for the flavour, not for the name.

Yeah, I think that most people are just assuming that Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select is the same thing as Jack Daniels. I'm not even sure that the two belong in the same category. Single Barrel makes me think of caramel, smoke, vanilla, and the smoothness just doesn't compare to anything else. I can't say any of that for the regular stuff.

Jack Daniels gives me shitty hangovers, Jameson beats the crap out of it.

Bonidex bulgarian whiskeys that make Black Ram seem like an aristocrat's drink in comparison.

I guess this company only sells its stuff in bulk, since I never found them in retail stores all the times I went to Bulgaria. THey are also dirt cheap, like $2 for a "Jack Williams" 1 lt. whiskey bottle....if you order like a 1000 or course.

Their website must be every alcoholic's dream.

If you want to start trying single malts, start by getting yourself some Laphroaig. Can't really go wrong there.

I can't really agree with that. Laphroaig isn't what I would consider a starting whiskey. To me it's exactly like drinking an ashtray.

I don't drink, myself, but dad was always a huge fan of Cardhu when he did. Figured I'd mention, since no one else brought up that name.

Laphroaig is certainly an acquired taste but I acquired it some time ago. I personally would describe its flavour as more "surgical" than ashtray-like. However, it certainly has strong smokey overtones but I'm fine with that because I like smoked cheese, Arbroath smokies, Lapsang souchong tea...

Too bad that's a liqueur, not whiskey. It's also probably so sweet that if I drank the whole bottle I'd get diabeetus.

Funny you should mention that tea. When I tried Laphroaig, my brother took one sip before me and then asked me. Do you recall drinking Lapsang at my place? I said yes, then he said. I don't think you're goinbg to like this hiskey. He was correct of course. It tasted like the alcoholic brother of Lapsang. ;)

And I am not debating Laphroaig's merits as a whiskey. It's a very good quality whiskey. But what I am debating is it's merits as a whiskey you would want to start out by trying. You need to build up to something like that. IMO anyway.

My dad was really into whiskey, but I'm more of a gin guy. I'd like to try that JD single barrel.

Yeah, I think that's a fair one. Even if a person tried Laphroag early on in their whisky drinking "career" and liked it, it doesn't give much of an idea of what a "typical" single malt is like. Some of the nice Speyside malts are a good starting point.

I got a bottle of this for Christmas:

http://sourmashmanifesto.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Knob-Creek-Bourbon-750_40FBC64A.jpg

It's fantastic. 100 proof and somehow still the smoothest bourbon I've ever had.

I've not been a real fan of whiskey though the taste has come to my liking recently, can't go wrong with a bottle of Talisker or Dalwhinnie ;) Went to the Talisker distillery when I was younger. I would say for the people who only drink Jack Daniels or Bells (which is a Scottish equivalent in this country for popularity), is go out and try some obscure ones which I'm sure I will do some day (when I can afford it :P)
