Wetware is an actual thing that exists now. Chips can be implanted in the brain to allow control over electronic equipment, or to receive data.
I'm not looking forward to the day when I have to be immunized against computer viruses. :(

I do eagerly await the rise of the functional darknets, capable of replacing the soon-to-be-defunct Internet as it dies in a mire of surveillance and government regulation.

The fun part will be risking the penalty of 20 years of pound-me-in-the-ass prison just for connecting to them.

So the future of the internet is bright for those tasked with carrying out said ass-pounding? That seems to be a common theme as of lately. Maybe we should all become bubbas.

uhhhhhhhhh

The theme is always ass-pounding when Maes is around!

Anyway the future of the internet will be that image somebody posted months ago where you had to pay more to get more sites, the cheapest "internet" only let you access Myspace, Facebook and Wikipedia. You had to pay more to get more sites and could only get "full access, not including illegal material" by special request.

Oh and every country will copy China and have national firewalls. There's already charities (fucking charities!) calling for it in the UK because "if even ONE CHILD IS SAVED...".

Yeah, the prospect is pretty frightening. Just watch some Ghost in the Shell (show or movies) and count how many times someone's brain gets hacked. Still, it's kind of intriguing that that technology actually exists, and that the philosophical concept of "joining together as one mind" is actually viable.

Yep, who needs the Borg when we can develop our own hive-mind - which will probably be run by the IIPA. :)

Brainwashing doesn't only happen in America ("omg everyone's a pedo if they even look at a child for more than a few secs, let's ban everything!!!111"). Not to mention they already have the IWF child porn filter and the new-customer-to-major-ISP adult porn filter, both of which will be used to block anything the corporations want.

America is full of extremists. Not muslim extremists per se, but extremists nonetheless. Hugely imbalanced.

joining together as one mind

I already believe the human mind is joined together as one, in different ways. But maybe it's because to my own experience, I feel as if my perception has increased and can feel and hear thoughts from those around me, even in the far reaches of the world. I believe myself to be a shaman, and have had legitimate out of body experiences with no ingestion of substances. In other words, to "normal" folk, I'm an absolute crazy. But it's only because I have legitimately advanced to a new level of intelligence, and associating with "normal" folk becomes painful, especially since so many are so superficial. But the cool thing is, somehow the right people, willing to increase their perception and intelligence as well come to me and initiate thoughtful discussion.

Wonderful responses. I really like that people are seriously considering where the Internet is going. I've been trying to imagine it myself, and I keep seeing a similar image in my head. Basically, a gigantic tree in which the branches represent every possible website and web page in existence. Your thoughts would navigate you to various branches which would become ever smaller yet identical, like fractals. So you find the YouTube branch, and every single video on the website is represented at once, but your mind sends signals which zeros in one on particular video. You would see this overlayed over your vision, rather than relying on a screen with boundaries.

So you envision being able to plug our minds into a fully functional cyberspace, but all we do with it is sit around and watch youtube videos like we can today? That's actually a rather depressing thought.

Just don't vaccinate your kids. It's a fact the mercury causes autism, and doesn't prevent malware.

And, as per Sturgeon's Law, 95% of them are Youtube Poop. The Youtube fractal would be easy to find in the webscape as it would be Weegee-shaped.

"My browsing is augmented."

Also, the day when the internet as a whole is altered to accommodate "mobile devices" with PC browsing being a hollow shell of what it is now (not unlike how gaming is now when considering games that are made to accommodate consoles) is the day the internet dies. Because fuck that. Same goes for the whole "motion control" idea brought up earlier.

Before that happens, the world would have to become so advanced that work is neither valued nor necessary anymore, and you would have to have a population that genuinely doesn't like to be around other people. Such a thing would never happen because those kinds of people never reproduce.
