I just noticed that Skulltag is also doing things Google's way. The latest update is simply "98b."

More like Google's doing it our way! According to the Internet archive we haven't advertised the "0." since September 2007. Chrome didn't come about until a year later.

That said I never noticed we were doing that either, but I guess it makes sense since honestly I don't think there's ever going to be a Skulltag 1.0.

But what if they only had one byte allocated for the version number? ;)

Imagine where Internet Explorer would be if every security patch and hotfix was accompanied by a new version number?

Mozilla doesn't work that way either.

I wish there was a way to see how many of my addons will break from Firefox 4 to 8.

FWIW I haven't had a problem with any 4.x compatible addons that I use in following versions.

The problem is that mozilla is doing it wrong: they're advertising the version numbers. Chrome is Chrome: that is, it updates itself, so there's no real reason to tell the user what "version" it is. However, Mozilla didn't get that memo and is still stuck on advertising them as "AMAZING NEW RELEASES" (at least from my perspective, bite me) so it rings so damn hollow. It's annoying to the user, who really couldn't care less. Expect Chrome to keep climbing in the browser race.

Mozilla doesn't advertise version numbers and they don't do that either. I know the Slashdot crowd likes to get roused up over the same issue, even though they cause it upon themselves (posting a new news item every time the "big" number gets bumped).

(Hell as far as things go, if my package manager didn't tell me what version it's upgrading (and that one should, mind you), I probably wouldn't be sure what versions of Firefox or Chromium I have either)

Fixed that for you.

I remember version 4 release parties at my own university.
