A little late to be talking about this film, but who cares. It's highly controversial and extremely explicit, and stars Willem Dafoe. It concerns a tortured mother and overly analytical father who cope with the accidental death of their toddler. Days after having seen it, I have not yet decided if I like it. It's one of those films that doesn't hold back (within the movie's first minute is a brief but slow motion shot of vaginal penetration) and the brutal sexual violence is so dispicable that it would be inappropriate in most pornography. Contrarily, it is a beautiful and extremely artistic film, with unforttegable images and rumbling ambience in place of a traditional score. Has anyone here seen it, and care to comment?

I've seen it, yeah. I'd been watching up until that point a sausage string of more conformative and approachable films so that, when it finally came to viewing it, I was taken aback by its approach and hadn't the time or capacity to decide whether or not I really liked it. I think I did.

In any case, being a film that doesn't hold back on the viewer and is both controversial and explicit, it seems to know its medium rather well - treading a well travelled but increasingly unfrequented path in cinema. That's something I both admire and enjoy to know, even if the (whichever) film itself is naff.

EDIT: Yeah. Apparently I did like it. It says so right here in my movie journal: "Decent, yet smoked salmon. Will not watch again for while."

I saw it. Quite liked it.

And maybe it says something about me, but out of all the shit in that movie, the only thing I found uncomfortable was the wheel.

Loved it.

Not a movie to watch if you're looking for a movie to feel good after watching though.

It felt strange, seeing images that I would normally associate with a pornographic film (an erect penis, a close-up of a vagina), yet were placed in a brutally violent and horrifically ugly context. Part of me feels like the movie could have accomplished its goal with more sanitized sexuality, and part of me feels that the images were exactly what they needed to be in order to convey the horror director Lars von Trier was aiming for.

A Serbian Film takes this a step further. The closest thing to an actual torture porn film I've ever seen, or have any wish to see.

Not that I'm comparing the two movies. Lars von Trier produces art, ASF is a shock movie paying homage to old school shock movies by cranking the explicitness up to 11.

I saw Antichrist when it came out in 2009 and I liked it very much. The photo and locations were top notch and so was the two leading roles. The closure left alot to interpretation but I didn't really follow that up becaue I was a bit lazy. However, narratively speaking the movie made perfect sense IMO. The explicit scenes were all contitutive actions which made them way more shocking than any exploitation flick.

Von Triers latest film Melancholia is a very beatiful - yet depressing film that I can recommend to anyone who liked Antchrist. Charlotte Gainsbourg plays a leading role in Melancholia as well, which is a big plus. Get the blu-ray when it comes out!
