Only that people seem treat MIDI music as if was, in fact, analogous to a bit-perfect recording, not an interpretation. Otherwise, why the expectations that an arrangement should sound "the same" everywhere, why the complains that e.g. Doom doesn't sound "like it used to" etc.?

After all, you can only hear a piece for the first time once. Listening to the same piece again probably won't move you like it did the first time unless it's been reinterpreted.

That's... Uh. Do other people feel the same way? I ask that genuinely. The whole idea of first listening meaning more feels alien to me.

I guess it's like these people who think that spoilers (Snape kills Dumbledore! Darth Vader is Luke's father! Rosebud is a sled!) actually ruin a book or movie.

I'm agreeing entirely with Creaphis here - I love the traditional MIDI sound set as well. 99.9% of all of my songs are balanced and instrumentated under the default MIDI sound set, since it's basically the standard that all the more advanced interpretations of MIDI should follow. If a properly mixed/balanced MIDI track sounds out of balance through a soundfont, it's probably the soundfont's fault.

Speaking of (sort of), why is it that there's no webpage-based MIDI player that works across all browsers? Why does the listener have to have a plugin installed beforehand? Because most of them suck.

(I'm looking at you, QuickTime.)

Well, I guess that a song can gain more emotional significance with a listener over time. What I meant was that I'm usually most impressed by a clever musical device the first time I hear it. Maybe I just get bored easily.

Well, that and sometimes you hear a song for the first time and hate it, then come back later and it's one of your favorite songs.

I don't think it's just emotional significance. Sometimes it takes a while to notice everything that's in a song. Or you might have a different take on one at a later time. Like the first time I heard Skinny Puppy I was like, "wtf?" But years later, after I had exposure to other kinds of industrial music, I was able to listen to them and better understand/appreciate what they were doing. Now they're one of my favorite groups.

Fair enough. It's not like there's a wrong way to enjoy music. :)

I'm right there with people whose interest in particular pieces of music grows over time.
