Definitely the former, so we can push him into it, send him back to a random decade with an extratemporal transmission device surgically grafted to his brain, and enjoy it when he discovers that mass-market pop shite existed back then too. :P

On that note, I'd like to volunteer for the "surgically graft something to Violator's brain" role.

When doing so, please bear in mind that he has to survive for the operation to be considered a success. ;-)

Would be awesome to go back in time when bands had real talent and real musicianship was widely appreciated, great bands were top of the charts like Led Zeppelin Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult etc. Music today is a joke, even pop in the 70's-80's had more substance than the shit that passes for music these days.

Look to the underground, you'll find a whole world of quality tunes there.

I recently re-discovered audio cassettes, and the wealth of thrift stores that have still-sealed pre-recorded top quality ones, literally for pocket change. They also hold up very well to time passing: provided the tape formulation didn't lead to sticky tape syndrome, "new" tapes from the 80s sound OK, and those from the 90s are almost CD quality with the right equipment.

For instance, I know there's a few female Doomers on our forum but there's like, 3 of them compared to hundreds (thousands?) of male Doomers. By extrapolation alone it's safe to assume that all games are mostly appreciated by guys, actual experience outside of internet forums notwithstanding.
Doom came before a lot of girls started playing games though, so it's not a very good example. And there might be only a handful of currently active female Doomworld members, but I think I've heard of much more than 3 female Doom players in the short time I've been here.

Yeah. And the great thing about today is that we have the Internet, so the underground is just a few clicks and keystrokes away. I try not to take for granted that we don't have to either go out searching for something you really like or just settle with whatever is popular at the time.

Some pop was pretty good back then. But no matter what time period you go to, the shit always reigns supreme. It's just all you hear on the radio are the classics. The shit got flushed down the drain, just like now. Though, I will say that there's a definite shift in music that I don't like, even among the underground. I don't really like Radiohead, or the Whites Stripes, or whomever is popular now, but I won't deny that those bands are good.

I mean, the Golden Era of gaming had E.T., and I don't even now how many clones of Pac-Man. The Nintendo-SEGA wars were basically covered in crappy platformers with a few good ones mixed in, and I hate to beat a dead horse, but come on, we're on a Doom forum so you must know about Doom clones. Yes, Doom is more fun for us than CoD, but it doesn't sell as well.

Doom is 18 years old. Doom doesn't sell as well anymore.

I'm sure if the situations were flipped we'd be reading:

People that buy Doom are retarded consumers who buy everything put in front of them without thinking about it, companies like id and GT Interactive pump out the same shitty generic titles every year and the same retards throw their money at it, I used to love games until companies like this took over the market (which forced smaller game companies who were actually making REAL GAMES to go out of business) and released the same shit over and over again. 119.40$ a year for DWANGO, this is what gaming has become, what a fucking joke.

ITT: everything sucks except Doom. Even when it sucks, it sucks in a good way, so it doesn't really suck.

Back when I was younger, I didn't realize that a lot of stuff sucked. I wasn't as critical and cognizant of my tastes, so I was willing to try just about anything (and I also had a lot more free time to do so). Now I don't want to invest a lot of time and money to experiment, so I'm much more prone to analyze and judge. And there's also the fact that I've come to quickly recognize advertising and marketing techniques, which I would have been emotionally swayed by in the past.

Thus I buy few games--but the ones I do, I love to death!

Edit: It also helps that i'm too poor to buy 'hip' games. Eating and having a roof are far more important. :P

Sometimes I can't help but wonder if it's only a matter of time before developers are expected to have famous actors like Brad Pitt doing voice acting.

Happened long ago. Play GTA San Andreas. I'm pretty sure Samuel L. Jackson, David Cross, Charlie Murphy and James Woods are all in there. Also, this webpage has more.

Personally, I'm not super-picky about voice-acting as long as it's not Resident Evil 1 bad. Actually...scratch that, if it's that bad then it becomes good, so I'm totally fine with that.

Ray Liotta, Gary Busey, Burt Reynolds, Jenna Jameson did voice work in VC.

Yeah SA had Ice T, Axl Rose, Andy Dick and Chuck D though, lol.

GTA series has had lots of people that did voice work.

Using famous VA and live actors has been a staple of the vdeogame industry making which reached its peak in the mid-90s FMV era. "Under A Killing Moon" had a decent cast, as did the latter "Wing Commander" games and "Dracula" but then there were "titles" like "Plumbers don't wear ties" and "Night Trap" that practically made the very concept seem like a joke.

I had one of the earlier SegaCD models that shipped with this game:

The acting may well be the best part. ;)

I'd say these "games" fell into the "so bad it's good" territory. Everything about them was so terribly bad that it had a certain charm to it all.

Well, it's German phrases spoken by people who thought German words were pronounced like in English. (When you hear id guys talking about Wolfenstein, there's not a single one to say "Volfennshtine".)

I'm not sure how cash cows kill things driven by money? Maybe the put the bar so high that no one else can get there except for giant companies like EA or Activision.

As if the bar isn't high enough already, AAA games have budgets that some small island nations (and Zimbabwe) would view with envy.
