Didn't Rage Against the Machine do the rap/rock thing long before those other artists? Whether you like RATM or not (personally I can take them or leave them), you can't deny they've wrote some great tunes.

Ian Hunter was doing Pop rap since before your parents were born. :V

Nine Inch Nails, well Trent Reznor, did the ambient music and some sound effects for Quake. He had nothing to do with the music in Quake 2, or Doom 1/2, or Doom 3. And I do admit the ambient music in Quake was really damn good, fit well, and I love the fact that whenever I shoot a scrag with a nailgun I'm hearing Trent Reznor say "Noooh, noooh, noooh". But the only id game he had direct impact on was Quake, and had nothing to do with Doom 1/2, or Quake 2/3.

That said, I never cared much for Nine Inch Nails. I still like Pretty Hate Machine, and The Downward Spiral isn't bad, but he just comes off as whiny. When With Teeth came out, and I heard "The Hand that Feeds" it just sounded like a forty year old millionaire reading out of a sixteen year old girls diary. The same thing I apply to Marilyn Manson, although he doesn't have the musical talent that Reznor does. It's just quite a bit of melodramatic bitching that they have no reason to do. Reznor can still make decent industrial music, and I would say he should stick to that. Keep his mouth shut, and make music. Anything that comes out of his mouth at this point is just ridiculous whinging on the past and trying to capitalize on teenage depression, which he is thirty years past.

You might want to check out Ghosts, then, which is all instrumental. Or How to Destroy Angels, his new band now that he "disbanded" NIN. It's his girlfriend singing, and the lyrics aren't as whiny.

Whiny? I found most of Trent Reznor's lyrics quite typical to the genre. It's especially the metal genre which talks about bad stuff.

Bad as in "evil" or bad as in cheesy?

I think you need to listen to more metal. Metal lyrics can be about all kinds of things.

The problem I have with it is that he just ripped off the name of a Coil song.

How to Destroy Angels sound like - surprise - NIN with a female vocalist. Maybe that's the whole idea.
