Desktop 1 (my music production and occasional gaming box):

  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2.4GHz
  • 2GB RAM (maxed out, sadly)
  • 1.26TB total hard drive space
  • nVidia GeForce GTX 460
  • M-Audio FireWire Solo sound interface
  • 14 USB 2.0 ports, three Firewire 400 ports
  • Two monitors, one at 2048x1152 and one at 1920x1080
  • Microsoft Optical Wheel mouse (two buttons + scroll)
  • Case is some Alienware thing I got in the mid 2000s
  • Motherboard is some Asus thing
  • OS: Windows XP SP3

Desktop 2 (my everyday box):

  • Intel Dual-Core E5700, 3GHz
  • 2GB RAM
  • 500GB hard drive
  • nVidia GeForce 8800
  • 12 USB 2.0 ports
  • Monitor displays at 1920x1080
  • Microsoft Optical Wheel mouse (two buttons + scroll)
  • Case is some CoolerMaster case I got for cheap
  • Motherboard is some Asus thing
  • OS: Slackware Linux 13.37 with custom 3.1 kernel

Server (file server + local DNS + a few other things):

  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 2.4GHz
  • 2GB RAM
  • 2.1TB total hard drive space
  • 6 USB 2.0 ports
  • No monitor, keyboard, or mouse
  • Case is some CoolerMaster case I got for cheap
  • Motherboard is some Asus thing
  • OS: Slackware Linux 13.1 with custom 2.6.33 kernel (need to upgrade this...)

My laptop is just some Toshiba i3 system with 4GB RAM and Slackware Linux 13.37 (custom 3.1 kernel). Netbook is an Acer with 1GB RAM and Slackware Linux 13.37 (with the same custom 3.1 kernel).

I also have an unbuilt computer under one of my desks, and an old Alienware laptop with a Pentium 4 in the closet.

Ok, I'll bite:-

Athlon X2 4400
2GB of DDR400
Asus A8N mobo
GeForce 8800GT 512MB
950GB of total HDD space (500GB SATA, 250GB SATA, 200GB PATA)
19" 1280x1024
Some mouse
Some keyboard

It runs 99% of modern games perfectly fine. The only thing that I'd really like to upgrade is my monitor. But with no money to blow on such a thing I have to make do.

GTX 450? Are you sure? I don't recall NVIDIA making a video card like that.

No such thing as overkill in this scenario. ;)

My computer sucks
AMD athlon 64 3400+
Radeon 9600XT
1 Gb Ram
160Gb disk space

It's able to run games from the Doom3 era quite fine at reduced settings. It barely runs Starcraft 2.

Hey, DT770s are my gaming 'phones too.

Also, Skyrim can use more than 4gb now, it's been patched to allow that. And there were mods to let you use more than 4gb before it got patched.

I can beat that. This is my only machine, a Thinkpad T30 rescued from being dumpstered (my previous laptop was actually found next to a dumpster).

cpu : Mobile Pentium 4 (1.8 GHz)
mem : 512 MB
video: ATI Radeon Mobility M7 (output is 14-inch LCD)
audio: AC97
disk : 60 GB EIDE

It runs OpenBSD (no dual-booting). I usually underclock the cpu to 1.2 GHz (that's plenty enough). Memory usage is also usually under 50%, even with 128 MB dedicated to a RAM disk. It runs all the games I care about (90's era or earlier), and I also occasionally use it for contract work.

I'm sure there's probably someone here with an even older machine setup with Win95 or even just plain DOS. So long as they do what you want/need, it's all that really matters. :)

The DT770's are indeed excellent, and very comfortable considering their size.

Skyrim can't use more than 4Gb, as it's a 32 bit application. However it can use up to 3Gb of adressable space under a 32bit OS, whereas normally an application can only address 2Gb under such an OS. On a 64 bit OS it can use up to 4Gb. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/oldnewthing.../01/423817.aspx

I've got a couple. My desktops:

Gaming: Athlon II 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD & 1TB HDD, Radeon 4870
Music: Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, 750GB HDD, GeForce 7300LE
Built for girlfriend: Core 2 Duo 2.6GHz, 4GB RAM, 100 & 120GB HDD, GeForce 9600GT

I also have a Pentium, 486, 286 and IBM 5150 that I have yet to fix. My laptops:

Main/work: Pentium x2 2GHz, 3GB RAM, 250GB HDD, Intel gfx
Music: Athlon 3200+, 1GB RAM, 40GB HDD, Radeon 200M
Retro: Pentium 2 266MHz, 256MB RAM, 4GB HDD, NeoMagic

I also have two netbooks - one that I'll probably sell for parts and another that I may give to my girlfriend.

Damn, you're right I checked the RAM usage and it was only around 2.2gb of RAM, ah well I'm sure in the near future there will be some games that will push my hardware.

my desktop went fubar, so until i buy some new parts or a completely new pc, i'm using my music production lappy for everyday use...which i don't really like doing, so i restrict what i download, etc.

basically:
8 gigs of DDR2
400 gig hdd
Dual-core CPU

since it is my music production and dj'ing workstation i try to keep the other uses to a minimum.
i go online with it and i play quakelive with it.
every now and then i download a GOG that i just HAVE to re/play.

doom and mapping are on hold until i get a new pc, but it's ok because i needed to take a break from that stuff anyway and i have everything backed-up on an external hdd as well as my net e-mail accounts.
