...And I never got to play it.

Believe it or not, I would've like it had my older brother (he's a Final Fantasy junkie) let me play it. But the PlayStation (which would be known as the PS1 after the release of the PS2 in the future) we had at that time was rightfully his, and I stuck to playing Super Mario RPG on our SNES.

But enough of that! Do any of you still own that game? What other Final Fantasies have you played besides FFVII? (I still have the 3 SaGa GB games that were relabeled Final Fantasy Legend 1-3.).

I played it, although it helped that it was the only game I had for my PS1 at the time. I tried playing other FF games and RPGs, but I find them boring and I don't really have the time anymore.

Earthbound and Super Mario RPG are the only ones I've actually enjoyed.

FFX was my favorite, despite the mediocre voice acting and cheesy love story. It's also the only one I ever bothered to complete.

FF7 was great but I always get bored of grinding. Furthest I got was when it was time to go to the meteor crater and just never did--had a golden chocobo and did just about every other side quest except for that goddamn ancient forest though. Those frogs. FUCK THOSE FROGS. Oh, and all but two of the Weapons.

FF8 was also better than everyone gives it credit for. That said, furthest I got was third disk, just after getting the Ragnarok, then stopped playing for a while until my fucking dad saved over my save file. Never can stay attentive after the first disk anymore.

Got as far as the petrified forest in FF9 and get bored every time. shrug.

I've played 5 and 6 but was borrowing them from a friend and he took them back before I got to get very far. I think I have 5 now, but I haven't really played it.

I have a bitter memory of it, despite never having played it. Mostly because I got into an argument with someone who claimed that the infamous FMV was "how the game really was!" (no it wasn't, it was a shitty looking 3D hack'n slash) "it's the future, made possible only by the advance in microprocessors!" (uhm...dude, FMV exists since the days of LaserDisc, and I could watch quicktime pr0n back in 1994 on my 486 with Windows 3.1) "YOU KNOW SHIT!" (yeah right...he was the one to get actually scarred and brain-damaged in not one, but three car accidents).

I only played the original Final Fantasy on NES, in 1991. Loved it. Then a few months later got Dragon Warrior and finished it too. Awesome game! I think the last RPG that I managed to finish that year was Faxanadu, which is more action/rpg than turn-based (like the Zelda games).

I didn't play too many RPGs after getting Sega Genesis, other than Faery Tale Adventure, and partway through Shining in the Darkness (until someone permanently borrowed the cart). Pretty much missed out on all the SNES stuff. Dropped out of the console scene after the 16-bit days.

Those games take a damn long time to play, due to all the random encounters and building up levels, and some of that gets tedious after a while. Dunno if I'll have to patience to finish all the other NES FF and DW games. But maybe it's less of a problem now with ROM hacking. ;)

I've never played it. I did want to. In fact I thought I owned it for about 10 years and I thought the game was shitty. Then about a year ago I counted the VIII and saw oh its 8 not 7.

I've never played any FF game. And I never wanted to. But still I had hours of torturing experience from the games because of a friend playing it, and despite me coming over to do other things as we had planned, he would play that stupid game for hours on end claiming he was looking for a save spot.

For me, playing FF games was all about strategy of combat and not about story.

The only FF game I've played was the demo for 8 (VIII, sorry). It was alright, never really figured it out though. I like a lot of the music I've heard from it. I might try playing 7 someday.

Last FF game I played was VI. It's probably my favorite of the ones I've played (only one of the first 6 I haven't played is II). V is pretty awesome, too.

Another "never played a FF game" guy reporting in. Thankfully none of my friends were ever into it either.

I remember back in 1996 I (suddenly!) started getting Game Players magazine in the mail. Still to this day don't know why they began arriving but then again I'm not complaining :) This game was one of the big stories in the first issue of GP I got, which was May of '96. And like you, I never got around to playing it.

Final Fantasy VII is actually pretty easy. There really isn't a need to ever grind. That's a good thing, because by the time it came out I was done with grinding, having cut my teeth on Phantasy Star 2 and 3, both of which required a massive amount of grinding.
Phantasy Star IV is another that requires almost no grinding at all.
I'd say the best JRPG's i've played are (in no order):

Final Fantasy VII
Phantasy Star IV
Secret of Mana
Chrono Trigger
Earthbound
Dragon Quest 8 (very oldschool, but in the best possible ways)
Shining Force 2
Final Fantasy VI (3)

Final Fantasy X would be on the list if i could remove the horrible voice acting -- especially Tidus...in fact, I think the game would be pretty great if the main character was replaced with one who was actually the least amount likeable...although it is extremely linear.)

I'd say the Final Fantasy series is all but dead. It's dead to me anyway. I just can't play Japanese soap operas starring confused transgendered or androgynous characters (anymore?)
It's kinda funny thinking about it. If the technology back then allowed for better graphics and voice acting, then I'm sure all of those old Final Fantasy games would be the same. But it didn't and so they weren't.
I really miss the days when I was actually excited about a new Final Fantasy game.

I'll take my FFVI and FFV. Never been into 7, tried it once and got bored before leaving Midgar. Pseudo-anime 3D graphics really aren't my thing, either. I personally think it looks kind of weird in many places. Anything post-X completely bores me, and I only give a passing interest in anything post-6.

I've really only enjoyed IV, V, and VI. After that they became overly complicated, interactive movies.

You better rank Earthbound higher on that list, boy.

If we're discussing RPGs, I recommend Sword of Vermilion for those who haven't heard of it.

Back on topic though, FF7 was the first Final Fantasy game I ever played(I got into RPGs a bit late, I know). I've played through 1-7 as well as the dreadful FFX(the most pussified plot and characters I've ever beheld), and I can safely say that Final Fantasy 6(called FF3 in the U.S.) is my absolute favorite. They just got everything right on that one.

I played that, never really liked it myself.

I used to have FFVII and FFVIII, but in actuality they were my mother's. I never really got anywhere in them at all, I was far more interested in driving games on the PS1 such as Gran Turismo as a kid.

Then my mother sold them both.

Recently I bought X-2 (It was dead cheap), V Advance and VI Advance (Both very cheap also), and re-bought X (Another one my mother had on the PS2 which she sold).

I don't really play them as I suck at RPG games. Collection purposes only, really...

Fifteen years since videogaming died.

</trollface>

But seriously. I liked what I played of the game (only ever got about 7 or 8 hours in), but the impact it had on the Japanese industry is pretty much causing it's current years-long decline.

Also, you can basically point the finger of blame at it for causing every game designer to think they need cutscenes at any given point in time in a game.

FF7 is to RPGs as Sears catalogues are to porn. I'll have nothing to do with that trash.

Well, I'll have one thing to do with it. Girls playing FF games on their consoles for hours make decent pillows.

If you can find a second player, than Secret of Mana is a kick ass real-time RPG. I had a blast.

My old friends were a bunch of final fantasy fanboys. Though I never played a single FF game, constantly hearing about the two-dimensional ff7-through whatever characters got old quick. Unfortunately I am the kind of person that can let a shitty fanbase ruin a game for me. I can't stand final fantasy.

I wouldn't let the fan-base ruin the franchise for you. I despise much of the fan-fare, but the FF SNES trilogy were/are truly RPGs.

I played the Hell out of 6 and then later 7, the primary reason I got a PS. I played a lot of final fantasy. Tactics, 8, 9, 10 & 10-2... I guess I used to be a Square fanboy but the gameplay was never that compelling and I don't feel like going back and playing them. They're like fantasy novels to me, possibly entertaining but with even more filler and after switching to reading literature there's just not enough substance to hold me in the absence of action, like the platformers and FPS games I stick to now.

Though if I remember any of the RPGs fondly it would be the SNES era with 6, Super Mario, Mana, Evermore and Chrono Trigger. Certainly nostalgia is a big factor.

Edit: shit, almost forgot Earthbound!

I've actually never had the pleasure of playing the old FF games (up through FF6). I have played VIII, IX, X, and XII, and only found VIII and X to really grab me (of course, I played VIII when I was in middle school, which happens to be the peak of my interest in any/all fantasy and sci-fi interest). I played a bit of VII a couple years back, but lost interest after a bit (not sure why).

I'll have to get a hold of the classics at some point. Not any time soon, though. Just have other interests that have since passed video games by a rather long margin.

I'm actually an avid Final Fantasy fan and in all seriousness 9 is the best, not just because it contains everything that was good in old Final Fantasy games but because the original creators pretty much said it was (and still do). 1-6 are all worth playing if you're willing to devote time and even have any semblance of interest in playing a jRPG (which by the looks of it most of you aren't). 7 by itself was a pretty decent game but all the sequels, midquels, prequels and one crappy CG movie has goat-roped its good name through the mud. 8 is mediocre in pretty much all aspects, and everything beyond 9 is just utter trash, completely derailed from the traditional turn based Final Fantasy games of old. XIII is literally the worst game I've ever put actual money into and my interest in the series has been completely destroyed.

As far as jRPGs go Chrono Trigger might very well be the best jRPG to get non-jRPG fans interested in the genre, it truly is a very solid game.

I should look for FF9 on e-Bay, since I never played that one. I heard that it was a return to some of the gameplay elements of the first game in the series, like strict classes and such(e.g. fighter, red mage, etc.).
