Amiga can use internal/external serial modems and ethernet cards (even PCMCIA stuff). Of course the internal cards have to be Zorro II or III bus, not ISA or PCI...
For DOS, you're covered hardware-wise if you can find a packet driver for your ethernet card (piece of cake with NE2000-compatible stuff). And there's a whole suite of DOS networking programs like ping, nslookup, telnet, ftp, lynx, etc. I can't remember where I found them (maybe SimtelNet mirror on ftp.cdrom.com) but that's what I used in 1995 before downloading Slackware.
Or you can just keep it simple and go the terminal emulator route (Telix, QModem, etc.) but then you're limited to textmode only (well ANSI graphics anyway, which I actually prefer to the graphic overdose ad-laden web).
