I think he was referring to the original and unadultered Wolf3D, not advanced source ports with extra bells and whistles.
Really, Wolf3D felt more like a showcase of a 3D engine with the gameplay thrown in as an afterthought. I wondered how I actually played through it in two weeks back in 1994...something I wouldn't repeat again. I think the only reason I did play it was because I had FIRST played Doom and only AFTER that I learned of the relationship between the two...Doom's ancestor...it HAD to be cool, right? I tried to find that "cool" for two weeks and....well...other than my OCD of trying to collect every item and find every secret room, I couldn't really justify the effort.
