How could it not be considered a sequel?

By being a piss-poor excuse for a Quake game :p

Besides some vague reference at the start about the defeat of the Makron it barely had any resemblance to Quake 2; narratively, aesthetically, or, most crucially, in it's gameplay (small nuances mainly, but sufficient enough to make it feel very un-Quake). I suppose it wasn't any less enjoyable than many other First Person Shooters I've played over the past decade, but as a sequel to such a prestigious series it completely stank. In my opinion.

I'm of the opinion that Quake 2 and Unreal 1 are part of the same universe. There's marines, strogg and skarj in a triangle of faction warfare!

Skaarj*

Sorry, big Unreal fanboy...had to ^.^;; But I would like to see a war between Skaarj and Strogg. Both very barbaric races with very advanced technology.

Ha ha, oh I see... "This game sucked, I didn't like it, it's not a true sequel!"

Your opinion is pretty fucking void when you've pulled the shit from your previous post.

You know, like-- ah... it's not difficult to tie both Star Wars and Star Trek universes together if you think about it. I mean they're, like, both space movies, right?

Oh, but the Phantom Menace is, like, totally not a Star Wars prequel becasue it... ah-- sucked!

I'd like to adjust something I said on page one.

Apparently there are people who care deeply about Quake lore, enough to break out into a catatonic nerd rage over the mere suggestion of Quake and Quake 2 having anything to do with each other, even if the inference is entirely hypothetical. Gross oversimplifications of the opposition's words follow, mangling and cross-breeding the arguments being attempted in insane displays of mouth-frothing fury over these sacred fictional worlds being violated with indignity and sacrilege.

The whole idea of "true sequel" no matter the context is always ridiculous.

Star Wars episodes I, II, III were all true prequels to Star Wars whether you liked them or not. They don't prohibit you from watching the movies you do like, so why make a fuss over it? Likewise, don't play Quake 4 if you don't like it. That's all there is to it really.

(I've even seen this expanded to hardware devices; Motorola Xoom was succeeded by Xoom 2/Xyboard and had a bunch of non-AOSP customization put into it. Recently there are Xoom fans declaring that Nexus 10 is the "true successor" to the Xoom. It's not even made by Motorola!)

Art and entertainment have been critiqued since forever. Sometimes it's wielded better than others, but I can imagine Neanderthal cave paintings were met with grunts of approval and disapproval in varying measures.

Why do we bother? Chiefly because complaining about unimportant shit is one of few tonics we have in the fight against the inexorable boredom and turmoil of life.

Similarly, it's really not that hard to make a connection between Resident Evil and Warhammer 40000. You just need to ignore they are two completely different settings! Look at all the overwhelming commonalities between both: there's people battling monsters and other people. Clearly in continuity.

I think you're giving the Quake games' stories too much credit.
You're talking about merging the universes of The Great Gatsby and The Grapes of Wrath. We're talking about merging travel brochures for The Bahamas and the Florida Keys.

I think the real problem with the discussed merger is that Q1's biggest commonality with later entries, its small set of techbase maps and associated enemies, is the weakest part of the game in terms of both aesthetics and gameplay. I'll take the weird exteriorless netherworld torture dungeons populated by eyeless five-legged beasts over sterile techbases populated by dogs, grunts, and enforcers any day - and I will be disappointed by any attempt to bastardize those inexplicable torture worlds.

Check out the intros to these lists by Tronyn for quick descriptions of the settings where Q1, maybe uniquely, succeeds:

But of course, if Hexen is your preference, you probably get down with that whole hub shit.

TOTALLY! I think that the hub system is genius! It really makes the game feel like a real-life tour.
But what I love the most is how every sequel in that series makes a strong reference to at least one of the prequels, in terms of elements such as: available artifacts, recurring banners on the walls, monsters which look like they could've evolved from one common ancestor, etc.
It all flows together so seamlessly and masterfully.

As a Tourism&Travel student who has studied those locations quite recently, I totally think it would be a fun idea. However, it would be a very condensed escort tour which might not appeal to some demographics who wish to have more time for actively participating in additional activities other than sightseeing. On the plus side, at least the climate is the same so people wouldn't need to worry about changing their wardrobe while in transit.

I must admit that I'm a fan of Unreal myself! What I'd love to see is the Nali forming an alliance with the Sidhe elves of Parthoris to defend themselves against both the Skaarj and the remnants of the Serpent Riders' empire. It would be a full-blown, inter-dimensional warfare at its finest!

Not interested.

The only Quake I played was Quake 3 Arena. I played the demo of Quake 1 for like 1 minute, then never played it again.

And by way of a contrast, I love the tech bases in Quake and have strung them together so that they can be played one after the other in a small episode without me having to bother with all those endless gothic or Lovecraftian labyrinths. :P

To be fair, I do like the other levels too. I'm just a sucker for tech/sci-fi themed stuff and I enjoy the appearance and layout of the Quake tech maps. I could do with a bit less brown though.

Mind you, I must be some kind of heretic because I always found Quake 2 a much better game than Quake 1 and although Quake 4 wasn't great (and disappointed on its main selling point - what it would be like to be a Strogg fighting the Strogg) it was a damned sight better than Doom3 IMO and I definitely see it as a sequel to Quake2. To do otherwise is just a policy of unfounded denial IMO. :P

Great news that make my dick hard, even tho i fear that developers might fail to create gloomy abstract levels with fast gameplay.

id has a big advantage with Quake, episodes are not expected to have unique themes, they just must look fantasy-alien-Lovecraftian and have cool names like "Nightmares and Curses", "Rat Dungeons", "Rust Purple" and "The lair of [cool sounding demon name]".

*gasp*, maybe even they will be bold enough to implement the crouch button, WHO KNOWS? Will they go THAT far?

It is a mystery.

American is not allowed to work on another game until he fixes Alice: Madness Returns.

Alice is a commercial failure, so i don't think they'll fix it. The game had zero advertising, God dang EA.

That'd probably end up in a 3-way battle as the Skaarj do not ally themselves with anyone. Rather, they'd either destroy, conquer, or enslave any race they meet. Nali are enslaved, Krall are conquered and are now devote military servants, and they are in a minor war with the Mercenaries in hopes to destroy them. Interesting crossover, though!

Interesting analysis. I'd definitely still play that, though. :p

Just what I've gathered from playing Unreal and Unreal 2 :P
I've also read up somewhere on the extensive history between Skaarj and Mercenary...not sure if it was official or not. Can't find it and I'm sorta bummed about it >.<

Oh wow. If that's the case then the idea is even more brilliant than I was first thinking!
