If only the limitations were higher than 48*48 pixels though. *sigh*
Took me a lot of effort to size it down and retain some quality.

After trying out some fish avatars including a fish version of my original avatar, I really do feel contempt with my Voigt-Kampff machine, which probably wouldn't look good as a fish anyways.

No that's not a challenge, unless you want it to be one.

Yes, because some masterpieces are just far too detailed to be fairly comprehended and/or criticized at any other resolution smaller than that.
In fact, 64*64 is still not the optimal alternative, but it's better nonetheless, and we should be thankful for that.

P.S.: Those fishies are cooking so nicely. I love the smell coming from that stove.

Use the alpha channel. That should be all you need.

Most image editors (that are at least better than ms-paint) should let you select the background with the magic wand or similar tool and delete it, or you can always just draw on a transparent canvas (though if you use photoshop, you'll probably have to convert the background layer into a "normal" layer first -- at least this is what I experience with the stripped down elements version)

I never joke about such important business!
Three years ago I made a request to a talented artist to portray Sailor Jupiter and myself as a couple cooking dinner in the kitchen.
It's the REAL deal.
In fact, the original full-size drawing was so good that it earned the artist several new followers/subscribers. Oh yes. Plenty of fish!
