Recently, I've been creating and editing some videos and normally I would end up using Windows Movie Maker, in other words, a program that publishes low quality videos and is not able to add spectacular effects (particles, flares, shaking screen...) on videos. Also there's no way to put multiple sounds at one frame. Don't tell me to use Windows Live Movie Maker. It is actually worse than the old one and I'm pretty sure that it is known why.

So basically, I'm looking for good video editing programs that provide more freedom while still maintaining some of WMM's tools like splitting videos and adding text onscreen.

If you're willing to invest money, I'd say Sony Vegas. I don't know if there's a free alternative for it.

There's Virtualdub and Avidemux...though those are mostly video dubbing programs, meant to give you more control over cuts, splicing, import/export formats etc. rather than add effects or manage layered editing.

Camtasia Studio is quite good. Easy to use as well.

I use WMM without any problems other than it's a bit slow (though that might be due to my computer) and the editing is incredibly basic, limited to one text caption per however many seconds you put the caption up for, splitting clips probably for jump cuts and stuff and fairly easy to use but very terrible zooming effects.

The only crashes I've ever had with it are when it locks up for a few seconds and I keep clicking because I'm a moron.
