I used to study Karate Do and Tae Kwon Do when I was young. I barely remember anything relevant. For how long you've been taking said classes?

I did judo at university. It did wonders for my upper-body strength. Why? Because in my final year I picked up an ankle injury* and so needed to get around town on crutches for a month or so. That was, like, several miles a day.

By the time the ankle was mended, it was time to study for finals, and then to leave university. I never did take up judo again, because I didn't like the look of any of the judo clubs near where I was then living.

I remember some of the terms and how to count to ten in Japanese. I also remember that armlocks are excruciatingly painful and the difference between a strangle and a choke, and roughly how to do them. Probably some of the breakfalls are still instinctive, and may have been useful during some high-speed skiing falls.

* It was rumoured that judo means "the way of the injured ankle".

About nine months, they seem to be going pretty well.

Other than that, I took Tae Kwon Do classes when still a kid (but asshole instructor made me leave. Years later he was arrested for being part of a murderous gang. Fun times.) and some kickboxing more recently. Again, the problem is finding serious instructors whose backgrounds DO NOT include "selling protection" or somesuch. Besides that, I had a ninja craze for a period, but I don't think that counts....

I read Real Ultimate Power at least twice a day, because it's so totally sweet and awesome. In fact, once day it pumped me up so much that I kicked my dog really, really far and it bit a kid, just because the kid opened a window, and then upon seeing that the pirate popped like 16 boners.

I got green belt in judo some several years ago, but then stop it.. was about ready to get the blue belt. Was kinda difficult to concentrate as I was having lots of panic attacks back then.

I tried kendo some few years ago for a while, but then stop it after the basic course. The pants felt a bit too impractical for me. I think I tripped twice on them. Wouldn't want to trip on my pants if I was holding a real sword and was facing an opponent with a real sword...

I also did some sword fighting stuff with those soft swords when I was younger. There was some group, but later there were some issues with the place or something.. so it stopped. Did some more of it with friends later.

While I've stopped all "official" practice, I've always practiced stuff on my own, ever since I saw Kickboxer and Turtles. I was probably like 6 or 7. I think my kicks are going pretty well now... can do multiple kicks without lowering the kicking foot the ground, or combine into other moves without stopping to think the next move.

That's too bad. You should have shortened your pants/add ankle straps to hold them taut, and start your own improved Kendo school and system.

I did Tae Kwon Do and San-soo when I was younger. Then up until last year I did aikido. I was getting ready for my 1st kyu test when I stopped going. Now I rather miss it ;_;

I had a slight interest in karate once. Too bad my parents couldn't afford to pay for classes.

Years ago I went to a few ninjutsu classes. I remember the punching technique and they made us do some physical exercises and crawling around. It ended quickly because the teacher fled at one point. From what I heard, he was wanted for crimes against humanity during the dictatorship or "dirty war".

O_O that makes my former instructors that were (at least at one point) "merely" criminal extortionists, petty gangsters or -at the most- involved in an organization known to execute contract kills seems like innocent virgin schoolgirls.

And yet, it's sad that martial arts are flooded with such individuals.

Martial arts add structure to life. Mastery of hand and foot techniques make it easier to learn how to use a weapon in a combat situation. 3rd dan in taekwondo has taught me that most martial arts training begin and end at the same point.

A good black belt in any martial art style you wouldn't be able to tell what they train in, they must be well-rounded.

I've never took a martial arts lesson in my life, but if I was going to get into something like that, I'd go with MMA.

At the risk of invoking a shitstorm (not intentionally - I just find it an interesting topic), I think MMA has usurped all 'traditional' martial arts training in terms of practicality. There's a good reason why martial arts specialists such as karate black belts and ninjutsu experts don't dominate UFC. Their training doesn't emphasise raw offensive power, and they're screwed once the punching and kicking is out of the way and it turns into a wrestling match. Even strict kickboxing seems redundant when MMA has already assimilated its most effective techniques.

Even if you never envisage getting into a fight in the real world (I don't), it's gotta be fucking awesome for your core strength and general fitness.

I practiced stances with the help of Mortal Kombat Armageddon's KaC function, where you could just wathc them dance in place while moving their hands in threatening manners.

Could you also kick people to one end of the screen and have them pop out the other?

The training, with its emphasis on sparring, does seem to have it's downsides though. Interesting (long-form) article here.

I took Tae Kwon Do for 4 years,
became first degree black belt a few months ago.
I quit though due to time and money.
