"A 13-YEAR-OLD boy admitted raping his eight-year-old sister after watching pornography on a friend's Xbox.

The case has reignited the debate over children’s access to porn, with a rape charity calling for tighter restrictions.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, also pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting the girl and inciting her to perform a sexual act on him.

The youngster, from Blackburn, had told police he had been watching porn on the games console with a friend and ‘decided to try it out’.

He said he had chosen his sister because she was small and ‘couldn't remember stuff’.

The teenager, who appeared before Blackburn Magistrates Court yesterday, was bailed to live with family members while the youth offending team prepares a pre-sentence report on him."

While I just know legions of people will start the usual "this is just "think of the children" whine and nothing else" I must say I agree with lots of peoples claims that children should not have access to porn and that there should be some way for parents to restrict their kids access to porn that doesn't involve staring at them for the rest of eternity.

I still don't agree with some of the stupid ideas I have heard like forcing people to install an internet filter that can only be deactivated by calling your service and telling it that you want some sweet pornz, but I fail to see what is so bad about people being able to ask for it if they want it.

More propaganda to drum up a moral panic and bring in stricter censorship of the Internet.

Whenever I read stories like this, I picture this happening in a "Lord of the flies" society, where feral children live alone, and "adults" are some sort of cryptozooligic creature, spoken about in hushed tones but never ever seen.

Seriously. Where are the parents? What the hell are they doing?

There's something fundamentally wrong with the 13 year old. I think blaming porn and Xbox it's an excuse by the boy or the parents to pass off the blame. At 13 years old, you should know the difference of what is right and wrong at least at that level. Perhaps the boy was sexually abused in the past, and has a warped state of mind. If I were the authorities, I would focus a lot of attention on the boy's parents,re relatives and teachers; any adult figures the boy sees frequently.

As for his punishment, I think he should be committed to a mental health institution, and removed from society. Perhaps indefinitely.

That website you gave doesn't even exist, leading me to conclude that you fantasized this while watching A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Oh, boy! America will soon start regulating porn like Britain has started doing. After all, parents are incapable of monitoring their children's behavior.

Let the thought crimes commence!

If anyone wants to read the article, change the .com in the url to .co.uk. Still have no clue about the authenticity of the story, as it still sounds pretty sensational, but at least it's available to read.

The "where are the parents" argument ceased to be valid the moment it became possible to access the internet with almost anything that has a screen on it, and almost anything started to have a screen on it. We no longer live in an era where the only way to access the internet was with the single family home computer. Now kids can get internet access from almost anywhere. Because of this, I feel that a lot of people's critizism towards the easy access to internet porn is perfectly valid. I still don't support the crazy censorship some people people demand, but things are not as black and white as the "anti-censorship" crowd claims it is.

They ARE incapable of monitoring their behavior. If you have a child how would you effectively prevent it from accessing internet porn when access to it can be found almost everywhere? Please, do tell.

It was never a valid argument, and there's a reason you only hear it from unmarried people who don't have kids (or fathers, yes it's always men, who let mom do all the work so they can spend their time being smug bastards). You can't watch your children 24/7, nor can you account perfectly and shield them entirely from every danger if you want them to grow up into functioning adults.

you got me thinking about that system to check if the client wants to access a specific content.
I think it should be like this.

Your ISP should ask you, before signing you up, if there are kids in your home. If your answer is correct, they would give you a special kind of MODEM/NAT configured to ask you for a password everytime you try to access some content marked as 18+. this is something you would resolve easily between you and your MODEM/NAT without your ISP ever knowing if you really do access "some" content. this password would be renewed on a regular basis, say monthly, and it's "the client's (signer's) responsibility" to not let that information fall in the wrong hands. I guess that would solve the problem, as far as I (with my limited mind) can see.

Well... At least it isn't paedophilia. Just incestual rape involving two minors... Doesn't really matter what happens now, or if it is even true, that entire family is going to have a shit life!

dunno, seems teaching your kids not to rape each other would be useful.

This has to be a conundrum for conservatards. On one hand there's the disgusting nanny state that should stop telling parents how to raise their kids, but on the other we need more of it to ban evil stuff so our kids won't rape each other. Seriously, how fucking sheltered do you have to be in this day and age to fail at recognizing rape as bad at the age of 13?

What the fuck are you talking about? A parent should have a grasp of their teenage sons behavior. At that age seeing pornography should not trigger him to incestuously rape a prepubescent female. At thirteen I knew not to fuck a blood relative let alone forcibly insert my cock into them.

We're not talking about monitoring his leisure activities like you so confused but what this kid's mindset was to do these action. I'd bet a million that this kid was sporting some serious flags before watching porn with his friend. If this kid had shot his sister would you be pressing for more government monitoring on violent media outside of his own residence? No, you wouldn't.

Internet porn: this generations Columbine argument.

That would be great in a perfect world but there is just now way you can force all websites to flag themselves for adult content.

The only way this could happen is if internet neutrality surly did disappear and all internet content actually had to be reviewed before made available like television.

Kids should be spending much of their time at school. When they aren't at school, they should only be alone at home if both parents work; in that case they can spare some money from their double income for a baby sitter. If they can afford an Xbox, they aren't hurting that badly for money that they can't.

And they should try educating their kids anyway. It's something that is actually rather important "if you want them to grow up into functioning adults". I don't know about you, but I don't think "let's rape my sister, she's small and don't remember stuff" is a normal thought process for a child that will grow up into a functioning adult.

Recently this type of event happened in my family without the rape, because well, the young family member isn't a psychological pervert like that. And once his mother found out she couldn't blame anyone/anything but her son that purposely searched for the porn. That kid in the article is fucked up and if those words actually came from his mouth he deserves more punishment than his age entails. Easy porn access isn't a scapegoat, kids will be kids, usually without the rape.

Believe it not, but baby sitters are a pretty "American only thing". Or at the very least, I know NOBODY in my country who has ever hired a baby sitter. Both parents working is also the norm and not the exception.

Iceland's culture is not as paranoid as that of America's, we don't feel that our children will kill them self's if left alone for a day. Watching porn while the parents are working, on the other hand...

Not to pry but what kind of porno was he searching? I mean, a kid searching for porn isn't anything a parent should conjure blame for.

I thought Liberals endorsed the "Do whatever you want and be yourself" rule, as long as "Doing whatever you want" has nothing to do with the want to buy assault rifles. Free Sex and Love man! Get with the woodstock!

Not for nothing, but Iceland only has a population of 321,857. The tiny county, that I live in alone, has almost twice that amount; 608,975. The surround area has 23,508,600 people. Obviously in the United States, that has a population of over 300 million in total; there is a vastly larger variety of complex concerns to deal with.

Here's some insight: There's has been 5 gang-related murders over the course of the summer within the mile radius of my place of employment.

I don't know if I agree with this. For me, it seems that it's irrelevant given that in the internet there are no borders, so as long as you have access to it, the place you live in doesn't matter anymore (except, of course, in countries with tight controls, like China or Cuba; North Korea is obviously out of the question).

I was referring to the contrast between Iceland and the United States, in terms of culture. There is a difference, and it is undoubtedly due to the fact that the United States is much larger, and more populated. With more people, you get more issues. Its a lot easier to administer a country that has a much smaller population. its like comparing a white suburban town in the Midwest to Detroit.

That's nothing to do with population; that's culture. I live in a city that probably has close to a million people around every day and five gang-related murders a month would be a very worrying number.

Like Zed said, it also has nothing to do with kids' use of the internet.

Well, I think that population has an impact on the culture of the area. Moreover, America is really an amalgamation of different cultures (Even after generations, people still refer to themselves as Irish, Italian, German etc. Not American; even if they are mixed, they run down the list. Nobody at least in the NYC area refers to themselves as American, foremost); which is also why I disagree with the generalization of "american culture". There is also more of a willingness to have a more egalitarian, peaceful, and cooperative culture in places like Iceland, because their population is far more homogeneous than that of the United States. Here, in places like NYC area, people are far more competitive, and individualistic in their aspirations, because they really don't give a damn about their neighbors. Not saying that's the right frame of mind, but its the reality of the situation.

I know it has nothing to do with kids using the internet, I was just responding to Hardcore_Gamer's statements about the comparison of Icelandic and american culture. Please excuse me from derailing this thread any further.
