US to assign 3,000 from US military to fight Ebola

As long as no one who's infected comes home, no. And it's not too hard to find out if someone's got Ebola.

That's not how it works!

...

Oh well, at least our soldiers are fighting for a good reason (?).

I thought that the new, trending way of fighting something/someone today, from the EU to Putin to ISIS, was with #sanctions.

Mad scientist with political powers needs more test subjects.

Now I understand why the US doesn't want to send ground troops to fight Isis.

I was hoping The Onion wrote this article.

Why the hell are we sending the military to fight a virus? Oh, duh - we're going to shrink them way down and send them into the infected people to fight those yella belly viruses! Kinda like that futurama episode where they shrink down and fly into Fry.. It all makes sense now!

No, obesity is a 1st world problem in the US.

I think I know what happened here. They heard that you only really risk infection if someone bites you or pukes blood on you, and so assumed that this was a "28 Days Later" situation.

It does, though infected aid workers have already been repatriated with minimal risk to public health.

That might work if Ebola had some disposable income and a craving for electronic gadgets with deliberately short lifespans, for now I think we'll have to settle for helmet-mounted microscopes and extremely small calibre assault rifles.

America isn't one dimensional, its problems are big, wide and diverse.

Seems like a good step in the right direction to me. If you read the article, it's not like they're sending in 3000 combat troops ready to go Urban Rehabilitator on them.

The U.S. effort will include medics and corpsmen for treatment and training, engineers to help erect the treatment facilities and specialists in logistics to assist in patient transportation.

The likelihood of it traveling over here and spreading within the general public isn't that great. It definitely exists, but it's not that likely. Ebola spreads by direct contact with contaminated bodily fluids, or contaminated things like syringes and scalpel. If it spread by air as easily as measles or the flu, then I'd be more concerned.

The countries that are being hit hardest - Sierra Leone and Liberia - aren't exactly healthcare capitals of the world. There's been reports of the healthcare system being chaotic during the outbreak due to a lack of personnel. So adding professionals should help. And I would honestly rather see us help out like this than to "liberate" a country to establish "democracy".

I think the risk of something as awful as Ebola spreading is certainly a cause for concern, even if it is fairly minimal. I definitely agree that this is better than "liberatin' them dern foreners", though..

Whomever the President is = fall guy. Just someone elected to say things people don't want to hear. A weather girl could be a better President than any old white / half white man.

As a patriotic American I agree and accept all legitimate criticism although I am in no position to effect change. It is hard not to be jaded, but if it is true that they are going to stay away from the infected and focus their efforts on building infrastructure to treat and prevent infection and provide training to native medical staff then it is good to see our gov acting like global leaders and not just scheming about oil pipelines. If you are willing to believe everything is on the up and up, it is a noble cause. I want to believe it. I guess we will have to wait and see.

I suppose it will also provide good real life experience for our men and women in uniform to handle another biological crisis should it ever become necessary.

Tend to agree. But at least we are helping and not blowing shit up, at least that's what they're saying. I do think there is a lot of stuff that ought to be done here at home, but not by the military obviously.

What about helping OUR OWN PEOPLE? You know, healthcare, houselessness, taxes, insurance, stuff like that.

Domestic affairs must come before anything foreign!

Lest we forget that episode of Jimmy Neutron where Jimmy and Sheen fly into Carl to fight a virus that Jimmy created. Good times.

What we need here more than anything isn't gov intervention, it is jobs. Productive, living wage paying jobs. Then people will be able to solve their own problems. But if we aren't beholden to gov, they won't be able to do whatever they want... And so here we are.

Look at it this way; if Ebola is contained before it reaches US shores, then that's money well spent, surely?

It's not as if viruses are in the habit of respecting the arbitrary lines in the sand that we call international borders.

We are already healthy enough. No one is dying of a plague. We have hospitals everywhere. Our own health shouldn't be a concern so much as keeping a plague out of our country.

Like a B+ health system is better than a F- health system.

That's basically what neocons say about terrorists. As small of fraction as foreign aid is, I believe that money should be going to our own people. Its still billions of dollars after all. I think even quasi-conservatives would much rather give that money to U.S. citizens, as welfare, than people aboard. You could probably shelter the homeless, and feed the hunger, right here in the USA, instead of squandering it on foreign aid.
