Gez Posted February 4, 2015 Linguica said:GIF is pretty bad as an image format nowadays, sure, but JPEG is still highly competitive with even the latest advances in image compression. There's still something new apparently: http://bellard.org/bpg/ The difference in quality for the most compressed images (first listed here:) is astounding. http://bellard.org/bpg/lena.html 0 Share this post Link to post
Use Posted February 4, 2015 BPG is quite impressive. I've recently been migrating my CD collection to FLAC upon the creation of a new media system this summer. I enjoy the process. 0 Share this post Link to post
Linguica Posted February 4, 2015 Yeah BPG (or, really, the HEVC video codec) is MUCH better than JPEG at low bit rates very high compression ratios. But that is a little bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison because no one compresses their JPEGs THAT much. I just looked up a random big JPEG on imgur and it had been recompressed with a Q of 75. At that level of quality, the perceptual difference between plain old JPEG and any newfangled compression scheme is minimal at best. 0 Share this post Link to post
