I think that looking too deeply into the lifestyles of these fantasy creatures detracts from the element of mystery that surrounds the myth of demons.
Besides, you've gotta admit that the idea of a teleporter within a Pain Elemental is a bit daft. Simply saying that they reproduce the flying skulls is enough for me.
Magic brings with it mystery, and that's what keeps people interested. Take away the magic, and you're left with technological nonsense.

Bah, I hate fantasy, I'd much rather have scientific explanations behind all these monstrosities.

Here's my opinion of how some of the monsters work:

Pain Elemental
Pain Elementals are biomechanical creations, created by the invaders to strike fear and disbelief into the hearts of their human enemies. Extensive research into the human Bible and other works that depict demons has yielded the Pain Elemental's horrific design. A small anti-gravity generator inside the PE's body generates the levitating effect seen in Lost Souls and Cacodemons. The PE does not need organs; rather it is powered by electricity, which also powers a small biomechanical factory that produces what are known as "Lost Souls." The factory uses an assortment of nano-machines and is truly a marvel of engineering. A Pain Elemental, operating at 100% efficiency, can produce a squadron of ten Lost Souls in ten minutes.

Hell Knight/Baron of Hell
The Knights and Barons are control creatures in the army of the invaders. Despite the fact that they are single-minded killing machines, Knights and Barons have highly developed brains. Knights and Barons are very intelligent, and are able to employ superior tactics which have won the day for many a demon force. Holes in the wrists of the Barons and Knights perpetually produce a volatile chemical that reacts with oxygen and turns into a plasma-like concoction capable of searing through armor and flesh with equal ease. Knights are a less well-developed caste of Barons, which are used as lieutenants in the army. Barons are competent commanders, and lead by example.

Cacodemon
The Cacodemon, like the Pain Elemental, is propelled by a small anti-gravity generator imbedded within its flesh. The name "Cacodemon" is derived from the incredible amount of sound it generates when it has detected a foe. It is because of this the invader army employs Cacodemons as sentries and escorts. The Cacodemon's flesh is made out of a substance much akin to rubber, and provides extensive protection against electrical and energy weapons. This is to protect the Cacodemon from its own armament, a bio-electrical ball lightning generator. Though energy weapons cannot hope to pierce the rubbery flesh of the Cacodemon, even small-arms fire can fell one of the crimson giants with only one well-placed shot to the single eye. Its eye, emerald in color, can be used as a target in order to disable it, as its relatively small brain is directly behind it.

I know its a way out-there view of the monsters, but I feel its a relatively unique opinion that should get out there.

Tek (and everyone else), you should submit your ideas to me, like I said, I'll pick out the best ones for each monster and post them all here :)

Sorry Tek, it's a good attempt but no, sorry the demons are demons, not machines. What you've said previous states that they were produced by some other race as an invading force. This is wrong, no offense but you've described the beasts as bionmechanoids and they're not.

Yeah I agree with that, but if we did as Bigbadgangsta told us we could unite in renouncing Tek's "heretical" ideas.

The idea about daemons being biomachinery sucks, maybe the mancubi, the arachnotrons and the masterminds, but not any further.

NOTE: I updated the Imp's info, and added in da nightmare imp as well.

I declare this thread officially gay.

Carry on.

I now officially declare you mah bitch.

Carry on.
:P

This seems to be turning into a bit of friendly rivalry. I'll post more tomorrow (when I can be arsed, now im just too tired).

Not with me, yo. I'm just postin mah description as to what each of da monsters in doom2 seem to be like to me.

Here are some more for ya'll:

"Bull" variety Demon: the beasts of burden in Hell, these large, muscular creatures are basically the watchdogs and work horses of the underworld. Nicknamed "Bull Demons," because of their long bull shaped horns and hooves, these creatures have high strength, speed, endurance, and stamina. However, they are very unintelligent, so much to the point that the imps generally use them much in the same fashion which human beings would use a dog. These monsters will actually stand at the base of pillars running around growling and spitting, trying to get at something 50 ft above which they cannot reach. They have glowing red eyes, and can see VERY well in the dark, making them very efficient hunters and basically living killing machines. They are also physically MUCH stronger than imps, and although used as pets basically, can rip one apart in a matter of seconds.

Spectre: a variety of Bull Demon which has the ability to blend in with it's surroundings, much like a chameleon does. These creatures can camouflage themselves so well, even while moving, that they appear almost completely invsible to the human eye. However, they cannot control this ability perfectly, and usually will blink in and out of site. They have a lime green appearance to their skin (due to the mutation which gives them their coolor changing ability) and glowing yellow eyes. These creatures are just as stupid as their normal brethren, and are usually given away by their loud growls and screams. However, they are still VERY dangerous hunters, more than capable of surprising their targets.

Nightmare Demon: Composed completely of dark powers and negative energy, this creature is a completely magical entity, given solid form only by arcane means. They move twice as fast as normal bull demons, and have twice as much endurance, and have been nicknamed "Nightmare Demons". These demons strike fear in anything which happens to lay it's eyes upon them, and are shaped in appearance to appear exactly as a normal bull demon to make them even more fearful. However, since they HAVE been given solid form they are vulnerable to conventional weapons and although can take more damage, can be easily destroyed by a smart marine who knows how to run and shoot. It makes one wonder why the demons would use such a relatively large amount of power, to create such an unintelligent, brutish monster... perhaps to prevent them from being disobedient.

................ let me know what ya'll think.

At least we agree on the big pointers.

About the friendly rivalry I just thought that if we tried to overdo eachother with monster descriptions it could turn out pretty cool.

But now BBG said that he would compile efforts to describe monsters if we sent or monster descs to him.

A few of my ideas:
Lost Souls: Damned souls of Hell, which are doomed to roam throughout the planes of Hell. These eternally burning souls are among the most evil spirits of the netherworld - so evil they are that their etheral form has become that of a floating skull, shrouded in eternal Hellfire.
These souls are lusting for bodies to possess, in fact they only exist to long for a body to take over. Lost souls loathe demons as the demons are their tormentors and oppressors, yet the lost souls have no free will and cannot attack demons at will. They are, however, unstable and easily provoked to assault demons.

Former Humans: Guided by an unspeakable evil intelligence, lost souls have possessed and in varying degree mutated the bodies of combat-trained humans to use these to fortify the forces of Hell. While former humans have lost all compassion and emotion and any rational thinking, they still possess the knowledge about operating equipment, including weapons, and about various combat tactics that they learned as a human. The former humans contain all the Hell-induced hatred of the evil spirit possessing the body that they only wish to kill and at times feast upon everything human. However, former humans - just like lost souls, dislike demons as their oppressors and can easily be tempted into attacking demons.

Zombies: Reanimated dead corpses. These human bodies have been possessed by lost souls, just like the former humans, however these blasphemies were already dead when possessed and unlike former humans, these living dead possess no knowledge at all and are but brainless monstrosities lusting for the flesh of the living. Zombies are driven by their hunger for living flesh and nothing else, but if attacked, they will turn upon their attacker.

These are the enemies as I interpret them from Doom 3.

I like your description on the former humans. Nice to see that someone supports the view that they are not undead. Now we just need to write a treatise on former human social structures. How they make up crude mockeries of societies only built upon fear and the implementation of violence. A society where your status is only defined by the size of your gun.

If this sounds like anything of this world it is purely intentional.

DSM: great job on da former humans, dat's EXACTLY what I was tryin to say, but I couldn't seem to find da right words for it. Nice interpretation of zombies too dawg, dat's exactly what I would see them to be like.

The Pain Elemental:
As its name would imply these creatures are in constant torment, as their insides seeth with unmade Lost Souls and hellfire. Their only means of attack (and also to get some comfort from their constant pain) is to spit out a Lost Soul, by means of black magic we cannot fathom. Upon death, the Pain Elemental explodes in a violent manner, causing two or three Lost Souls to come shooting out.

There's what I think.

The cacodemon:

The cacodemons are demons of power and might, even though they only belong to the caste of lesser demons, only slightly above the base hellspawn. Their bodies reflect this. A cacodemon's body is a huge sphere hissing and crackling with energy. They possess one piercing green eye. They have a huge maw glowing with unholy blue power. Their bodies are covered in scales of a magnificent brilliant red colour and on the top of their bodies rows of horns give off the impression of a crown. A token of their pride and insolence.

Cacodemons have the ability to levitate and their primary means of mobility is flying though the cacodemon possesses no kind of wings. There is no rational explation to what keeps a cacodemon adrift. Some attribute the ability to the energies that constantly haze about them. Other point out that their excessive pride allows them to override basic natural laws by pure will. In all cases this property ceases upon death, making the cacodemon's carcass drop like a stone. Stunned or unconscious cacodemons keeps floating, however.

One well known effect of the cacodemon energy emnations is it's ability to spew balls of lightning. These balls are made of cacodemon mucus that is charged with energy inside the mouth before being spat out. These balls are the cacodemon's primary means of attack.

Though their form is quite alien cacodemons possess an anatomy which is not so deviant from normal animals. It has a bone structure made up by a large skull. They possess a digestory system capable of handling all types of food as well as some kinds of fossil fuels. They have a normal circulatory system with a heart hidden deep within the sphere but the blood that circulates within it is a weird substance. Bright blue in colour it appears to be as well adapted to carry high voltages as it is to carry oxygen. Within the living creature the blood glows, but shed blood will only remain luminiscent for a short while.

Cacodemons are immune to many kinds of energy. They don't seem to mind even lethal levels of hard radiation. In fact they seem to enjoy it often hanging around nuclear power cores sucking up the emnations. Intense heat as well as explosive force does to damage them though.

Cacodemons' role in the hellish hordes is to serve as flying shock-troops as well as watch over the lowly hell spawn.

Cacodemons believe themselves important. They figure that they were meant to watch over hell (and earth) because of their ability to hover often bossing around with the lesser hellspawn to show off. Little do they realise that they are only pawns in the great machinations of hell. Perhaps they don't realise this because they don't want to realise in their cocky pride. They attend pompous ceremonies and form patrols, small armies and even political parties to exert their vain claims of authority. This, of course, irritates those with real power to no end and they often devise various creative punishments for their insolent spherical underlings.

One of the most commen methods of punishment is to imprison cacodemons in small cages in full public. While it seems crude it serves a double purpouse since the emnations of the angry trapped cacodemon can be used to power machinery effectively making the cacodemon serve as a small powerplant.

Nightmare Imps (Doom 64)
-------------------------
These Imps are naturally translucent purple in color. Their skin is similar to that of a chameleon, however, Nightmare Imps cannot change their color. These Imps are held in high regard, for they are tougher than regular Imps. The translucent purple fireballs they heave are over 150 degrees hotter than the ones thrown by the Imps, and almost twice as fast. The exertion of force required to attain this speed requires Nightmare Imps to use both hands in order to launch a fireball. The talons of the Nightmare Imp are much harder that the ones of Imps. Their claws seem to be made up of a material much like diamonds. Nightmare Imps can also run much faster than Imps, making them much more dangerous.

Zombies
---------
The zombies of the corpses of Marines are the lowest form of Hellspawn. Though they are deadly in numbers, they lose most of their intelligence during the possession process. Zombies can walk, shoot and open doors, but other motor skills, such as dodging or running, are impossible for zombies to do. Zombies are armed with either Rifles, Shotguns or Chainguns. Zombies mainly get their orders from Imps and other such Hellspawn. When given no orders, the zombies seem to go berserk and kill everything in sight, and sometimes themselves. When zombies become enraged, they cannot be controlled. Zombies also lose the ability to speak, instead they communicate through swine-like grunts and snarls. Zombies were originally thought to be the corpses of dead soldiers re-animated, but this proves to be partly false. The brain, the eyes, the ears and the vocal cords are the only parts of the zombies that function. They do not breath, or pump blood, though they do bleed when shot.

S.S. Troopers
---------------
The S.S. are not Hellspawn, but merely traitors to the human race. They have offered their services to the Hellspawn in return that they will ressurect Hitler and give them Europe to control. They carry MP-40 Machine Guns from the World War II era and their current base of operation is Castle Wolfenstein, the infamous Nazi prison that William J. "B.J." Blazkowicz escaped from during World War II. It seems that the Hellspawn were using the prison for a Demon and Spectre breeding ground. A Cyberdemon stood guard at the exit to the dungeon to make sure that no S.S. Troopers tried to escape and not tend to the duties of tending to the Demons and Spectres.

Cyberdemons
------------
Cyberdemons are very important in Hell's army. They guard important places and are one step below Spiderdemons in the chain of command, even though they are stronger than the Spiderdemons. Cyberdemons have a Rocket Launcher in place of their arm. It launches HEAT (High Explosive Anti Tank) rockets. Its leg has been replaced with a metal piston leg, to even out the weight of its rocket launcher arm. Cyberdemons also have an opening in their stomach area. This exposes the tubes that pump the blood and other such things it needs throughout the body, it also acts as ventilation.

You'll get my two in a moment.

I think you should make a register for each submitter. Just like Dsm does with the stories. That would be cool.

The Cacodemon
-------------
The Cacodemon is a mutated form of a tropical frog that lives in the jungles of Africa. It has gotten its red color from swimming around in red paint, but also because it commonly spends its holidays on the Christmas Islands. The Cacodemon elevates with the support of a miniature helicopter within and propulses itself forward with the aid of Helper Hummingbirds. The Cacodemon's flesh consists of cotton to the major part. Reproduction is anal - the male finds a female, floats up behind it, unfolds its triangular penis and and penetrates the female's rectum, then starts jerking back and forth. The act lasts for approximately ten hours. The Cacodemon's babies, the "Lost Souls" are born in the night and instantly sent to the organic Caco Kindergarten, also known as the "Pain Elemental". Inside the Pain Elemental, Caco babies grow quickly and develop their threatening abilities. When released, they look like skulls, but they later swell up to their adult form (when no one is watching). The Cacodemon is able to fire lethal electric coconuts out of its mouth.

Once Doom 3 is out (and when I've played through its levels a couple times) I'm going to do a thorough description of as many of the monsters in Doom 3 as I can. Meanwhile, I'll try and describe some of the old monsters as I used to interpret them (still do in some areas).

Cyberdemon:
The cyberdemon was once a pure organic demon, but after the invasion of Phobos and Deimos, the demons have stolen human technology. The Warlord, as the cyberdemon was called before, was the first demon to be enhanced with cybernetic implants. The Warlords went through a rigorous process, involving them getting torn apart, before being put together with robotic machinery.
Thus the hellish Warlords were turned into the first Cybernetic demons used against the humans.

The Cyberdemon has become more machine than actually demon (hence its name), retaining its original organic, yet immensely solid skin. Yet most of its interior is pure machine and as such, Cyberdemons are immensely solid and can endure lots of powerful attacks. However, most important of all its defenses is its old demonic powers, as the cyberdemon has retained a bit of its magical nature, enhancing its already rock hard skin magically to withstand a lot of punishment.

The cyberdemon has also retained its original ferociosness, and is feared by all other creatures in Hell, and as such, it still serves as Warlord, severely punishing all lesser demons who displease it, often with a painful death.

The Spiderdemon Mastermind:
Before the invasion of human bases, this creature was but a defenseless brain on spidery legs, representing all the evil cunning of Hell. Yet when demons stole advanced technology from humanity, this creature was given a powerful, robotic body to replace it's organic legs. The robotic undercarriage was fitted with a powerful chaingun cannon, with the sole purpose of eliminating all threads to the Mastermind's precious brain.

With the one of the largest brains in Hell, the spiderdemon have extremely sensitive senses. It can easily track the location and movements of its enemies whenever the enemy is near, so hiding from it is near impossible. Yet the main purpose of the Spider Mastermind's brain is to guide the attacks on humanity and think of more ways to use the human technology against mankind.

Baron of Hell:
Barons of Hell are, as the name indicate, rather a high-ranking demon. Although, there is no real hierarchy in Hell and demons usually work through their primitive instincts, Barons of Hell are generally used to rally lesser demons and whip them into a blood lusting frenzy. Barons are feared and hated by all lesser demons and Barons in turn are quick to punish its lesser peons with a swift and painful death. While formidable enemies in themselves, Barons often surround themselves with large groups of lesser demons, to take care of any threat, yet when it comes down to defending itself, the Baron of Hell is more than capable. It's strong, rock hard skin combined with equilly solid internal organs and muscles, allows it to withstand heavy attacks. Also, the Baron is constantly powering its mighty fists with pure, evil energies, enhancing the pain it inflicts on its victimes. At a distance, the Baron can conjure up and hurl a dangerous, slimy goo, shrouded in a sort of green fire, that causes decay.
