I can make one in about 10 minutes. I'm not going to make it unless it's used though.

The current BFG looks blotchy and too busy, we need Scuba's nice clean BFG.

Please.

you should probably also consider that people will be more invigorated and interested in freedoom if you replace things with improved versions. i'm working on an e3m9 now and then but i just see freedoom stagnating and not improving. seeing improved versions of weapons would probably only motivate people to add new things to the project.

Yes I'm aware of that, which is why we are still discussing it. I am not going to replace anything right now though, as you have noticed fd has been pretty stagnant and there are a few other things to do first to get it back on track. The new website is nearly done now; and I think we need to work on some kind of road map. Of course if people all seem to want this new BFG we'll accept it - I'm just not happy with the way we're going about breaking the rules.

Isn't FreeFOOM supposed to be a wad for the people? If an entire base of players say it's better than the old BFG, then it goes from a subjective opinion to a group concensus on what should unanimously be improved.

I don't see an entire base of players here.

Well, some were here to discuss it, and the argument is pretty one-sided.

Well, I think Jon is right. Freedoom has come pretty far, and I'd like to see it be finished. But that won't happen if we keep replacing the existing data with new material. I agree that Scuba's BFG looks great, but on the other hand it looks quite like the Doom BFG. The existing BFG doesn't look horrible either, so I don't see an urgent need to replace it.

yeah, how i see it the point is to create a good recreation of doom that's available for free, not some weird new ugly TC.

Maybe you should read the notes again.. we're not just cloning doom. Indeed to do so would result in a non-free wad on the grounds of trademark and/or copyright infringement.

Then again there's the doom-esque music, textures, and even other guns... which we already have in there.

On the other hand, one would think that since it's called Free Doom, that it would perhaps resemble DOOM a little bit more. Heh.

Weapons like shotguns, pistols, rocket launchers and plasma guns are pretty generic, as are a lot of the textures. However, I think the BFG isn't. Its behaviour is pretty unique, so is its look. I don't see why we should jeopardize Freedoom in any way be using resources that are too similar to the original.

I couldn't find Carmack's reply to fraggle's mail where Carmack himself said that we can't make (nearly) carbon copies of the original Doom resources. Maybe someone (fraggle) link to this mail?

BTW, I think Freedoom is becoming 3 years old one of these days :)

I must note however that we are stuck with its behaviour - which has already been GPLd. I think creatively the BFG is perhaps the hardest weapon to replace.

Sounds like an excuse for a celebration :) Or maybe even a push for 100% or something.

I think the current BFG would look pretty damn cool if the concept were used to create a new weapon from scratch. It's just a little sloppy looking right now is all.

Yes, it looks inspired by the BFG 9000... but no way is it even NEARLY a carbon copy.

In fact, stacked up next to the original mine looks pretty bland :P

Make it black/blue/pink and give it a round barrel muzzle thing, problem solved.

How many frames have you made? How do you anticipate the muzzle flash / impact sprites to look? Would you be willing to alter the palette slightly / perform minor cosmetic changes etc.?

Changing the tubes to blue/other colour would be a good start.

There's basically only one frame (but one frame is all the BFG uses anyways) but there are a few frames where the readout on the console changes.

I see the muzzle flash as more like the one I made for the Samus Arm.

Would be a good idea if all the weapons is right angled or middle angled. However I am not much for right angled, but that could be me. But that bfg look cool, but kinda I like the old one too. :P
