What are the Doom code requirements to run the Freedoom shareware IWAD? The readme seems to indicate Doom II only, not Doom I, correct? And what about the source itself? Should theoretically any "vanilla" version of Doom II on other platforms be able to use the IWAD (assuming no endian problems)? Or does the IWAD require some number of code enhancements to the original version of the source provided by id?

The platform in question is the Samsung N501 NUON enhanced DVD player, which already has a functional (but slow) port of Doom I with the shareware IWAD. I'd like to get the Freedoom IWAD running on the code as well.

Freedooms maps are designed for Boom compatibility. That means you may require a source port like Boom (duh), prBoom, ZDoom, Eternity, MFB, Rised3d etc. to play them. You can find a list of source ports here: http://doom.wikicities.com/index.ph...ry:Source_ports

However, a fair few of the maps work with a vanilla doom port, and all of the resources do.

So would it be possible for someone to take the current Freedoom IWAD, strip out the "incompatible" stuff (meaning incompatible with the original Doom I code), and make a true Doom I replacement IWAD? Even just 2 or 3 new maps would be cool. I have very little experience editing WADs, so I'm not sure I'd want to tackle a project like this. But is it possible? And easy or hard to do?

Yeah it's possible: the easiest route would be to look at old PWADS in /idgames for ones with a compatible licence (quite a few have 'you can do anything you want with this file') and just merge them into the freedoom IWAD, for this purpose.

The only thing to be careful of would be to find maps that only used resources from the first chapter of doom1: but there are conversion tools (afaik) which would handle this for you.

I think identifying candidate wads could be scripted - I'll have a word with some people who have been working on the /idgames database from a code POV.
