I don't see why the votes of non-contributors shouldn't count. If you want to please a broad userbase, why wouldn't those sorts of people have a valid opinion? "Hey, what do you think of this [image] versus this [image] to replace the cacodemon with?" isn't a question that Freedoom contributors are specially endowed to be able to handle with some sort of special level of judgement. It's a question of preference, and anyone should be able to answer, especially if they are potential users. PRODUCTS ARE FOR CONSUMERS, NOT FOR THE BUSINESS THAT MAKES THEM. Real businesses try to maximize profit by delivering the minimal level of consumer satisfaction necessary, but since Freedoom isn't going to be sold, I can't see why that kind of mentality would factor in.

I didn't say they shouldn't - I just said that people would have to sign up to a mailing list. There'd be no restriction on who could sign up. It would just mean a) people wouldn't have to haunt the forum to be involved in the decision making, b) it'd provide a small barrier to a mass flood of forum denisens voting on something they don't care about.

Processes like that are pretty much guaranteed to keep people from contributing (I know I wouldn't).

If you want quality control and the ability to replace existing resources please help us to work out a fair system to do so :)

Jon you are much too obsessed with working out some flawless Solomonic system by which better resources can replace worse ones. You are the Freedoom manager, if you think that one sprite is simply better than another, replace it. There have been numerous cases where a newer submission is CLEARLY superior to an old one but you haven't wanted to change it because of some misplaced sense that you would be doing an injustice to the original submitter. Give it up and go with your gut, trying to make these long tortured decisions only contributes to the project's gridlock. Why would anyone want to work on a project where quality is secondary to making sure no one might ever feel bad.

I say drop the rule and use forum polls in deciding whether to replace things. And I for one prefer this caco to the one currently in.

Or just write a WAD builder, where people can select what sprites they want to have in their freedoom, then build this WAD on-the-fly, pack it and let the user download it.

To be honest, I havent really followed the "no replacements" rule much. In fact, I even dropped some sounds recently which I felt werent up to scratch.

Nonetheless, I do feel strongly that it is better to work on monsters which are missing rather than add new ones. I think the existing cacodemon is certainly "good enough". It would be much better if this could evolve into a pain elemental.
