One thing I was wondering about, we are still using id's names for the difficulty levels (like Ultra-Violence, and Nightmare!, etc.). How are we in the right to be using these titles? Perhaps we should name these "Skill X" with a number in place of X. Or maybe "Very easy, easy, normal, hard, very hard"?

What do you guys think?

Something creative will be awesome. "Skill 4" or "Hard" is too simple.

I second "Will this hurt?" and "Deathwish" from GreyGhost.

A few others off the top of my head, in no particular order:

Where is everybody?
Broken bones

If only for the few images required here, it might be more trouble than it's worth, but there is some decent software out there to save time with things like this.

I've personally used this freeware program for a lot of bitmap font stuff before. Setting up new fonts for it isn't hard, as you just have to put the images in a long row seperated by single pixels in the corners.

Here's an example file that I tossed together in a few minutes (based on font_red_15.png), which works pretty well with the program.

Need to avoid cute (it is only cute the first 3 or 4 times you see it), trite (cute sayings that have already spoiled), phrases from movies (commercialized cute and trite, and copyrighted), obnoxious (annoying right from the first viewing), insulting (a special kind of obnoxious),
etc ..

I could live with the easy .. hard.
Mostly out of fear of what you might choose, I offer these...

1. Basic Training
2. Grunt work
3. Heavy weapons needed
4. Maximum Carnage
5. Stuff of nightmares

Nightmare mode is mentioned in docs as a special mode, and in many net comments. Make the name too unique and the users will not recognize to what the docs refer.

Never-ending Nightmare
Endless Nightmare
