Here's a song that I had originally written back in 1995, which was later added to the soundtrack for Team Eternal/TeamTNT's "Eternal DOOM". Most of the music that I had composed for Eternal DOOM was fairly "high-browed" type of stuff, but this song was one of the more driving rock pieces included with the game.

I have re-sequenced the song in Yamaha XG format, recorded it to an MP3, and uploaded it here, "DOOMin': Live!" -> http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/Weed...DOOMin_Live.mp3 .

The song is a live rock concert performance sort of thing, with a driving Hard Rock style that everyone is sure to like. Well, at least the screaming girls in the crowd and the audience in the MP3 seem to like it LOL! Crank up your speakers, and rock-out. Oh... and cheer along with the crowd if you feel like it :)

P.S. More of my crapola here (as well several new releases, including another "Live" sort of thing, "Black and White: Live!") -> http://www.richnagel.net

I myself have always been partial to the "high-browed" stuff <grim>, but lately I've been messing around with some Yamaha MIDI stuff that's been just dying to get it's overdrive and distortion guitars heard :)

There are multiple "best in the Wad"! :)

Recently I've taken a fond liking to map02's music. Take "recently" as a sincere compliment.

Hehe, I like this MP3 too... It's kind of odd to hear it in a concert setting, but it's cool :)

BTW, Rich - would you like to join my project as musician? You can find it by searching for "Xmas Doom 2009/ 2010" in the Wads & Mods forum... :))

That's the sort of "high-browed" stuff I was talking about... ahhh... good 'ole "Death March Reprise" :)

Hehe, for another "rock concert", visit my web page :) And more serious stuff (MP3 linky below the CD pics) directly below that :(

Many thanks for the offer, but things have been real hectic recently. There's a good chance that I may completely out of town for the next few months.

By the way, Rich: what music did you use for inspiration when you did the Eternal Doom soundtrack? The question struck my mind last night, as I was watching Conan The Barbarian :)

I'm very fond of the medieval legends, and particularly the music :)

Can you recommend something?

Here's one you may not have possibly heard, courtesy of A Clockwork Orange (hehe):

Quite honestly? Really... nothing <grin>!

I am a bit partial to Classical music though (including sad Orchestral-melancholy type of stuff, as well as anything by Antonín Dvorák), as well as emotional and powerful movie soundtracks (OT, speaking of which, surf to my web page at http://www.richnagel.net , and check out the "Blockbuster Movie Soundtrack" section/MP3 near the top of the page).

A few of the tunes have a bit of background/history though...

"Suspense!" (Map04):

Wrote this back in 1996 strictly to show off my talent (or lack thereof) to Team Eternal.

Alex Mayberry had uploaded a prerelease pack of levels from ED1 in the (long-since) gone Action Games Forum on CompuServe. I downloaded the prerelease pack, and was really impressed with the levels. But I thought (just like I did with a lot of the better levels of the time), "Why no music?!" <grin>.

I sent Alex an email asking if they were interested in any music for the pack, and he replied that they were interested; and to email him an example MIDI of my work.

That night I rather quickly tossed together "Suspense!", sent it to him, and got a reply several minutes later that they definitely were interested :)

For ED1 and ED2 Alex was in charge of production (so's I didn't really have any say-so as to which of my tunes went with which ED levels), but I had actually intended for the tune to be used in Map01 instead of Map04 <LOL>!

For ED3 though, I was in complete charge of music production and organization (as well as leading the beta/play testing team).

"Doomin'" (Map26)

Something that I wrote back in 1995 that I originally was gonna use for a DOOM PWAD of my own. Heh, my PWADs suck ( http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=13018 and http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=9034 <LOL>!), hence it was never released... and the tune was later added to ED.

"The Lost Souls" (Map11)

Wrote this back in 1994 when my Grandmother died. I don't think that ANYONE (except for a few close friends and family) knew of this little-known tidbit about the song.

"Death March" (Map12)

My "first" actual "DOOM type" song... originally written back in early 1994 for Patrick Hipps' DOOM 1 level "Command Control" ( http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=724 ). During the ED project I dressed up the song a bit (heh, it used to have a flute solo in it <grin>), and then added it to ED.

I'm prolly forgetting some of the origins of one or two of the other songs (I forget), but IIRC all of the rest of the music was composed in 1996-1997 exclusively for Eternal DOOM.

gemini09 said:I'm very fond of the medieval legends, and particularly the music :) Can you recommend something?

The "medieval legends"? I'm not sure of who/what that is? Prolly my age/ignorance shining through <grin>.

gemini09 said:Here's one you may not have possibly heard, courtesy of A Clockwork Orange (hehe):http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a833-nvz6e4

I'm on a miserable dialup connection out here in the woods, so's YouTube videos are for the most part a no-go for me. But, I *was* able to hear the first part of that... quite nice :)

Heh, sort of OT, one of these days I really need to release all of my stuff that I wrote for a retail project that eventually went belly-up back in 1998 or so, "Curse of Pyragon: Fabled Land". The company ("PrimalSoft") unfortunately went belly-up during the course of the game's development.

Glad ya liked it :) Heh, for another "live" perfomance sort of thing (although not Eternal DOOM music related), surf to my web page at http://www.richnagel.net , and scroll down to "Black and White: Live!" (under the "A New Song, and an OLD Song!" section) <grin> :)

(edit) Ahhhh... upon re-reading, I'm thinking that you were thinking that the DOOM song was an actual live performance? Hehe, if so, nope... all recorded from MIDI, with some various MIDI applause and girl screams mixed in for good measure <grin> :)

Wow, what an awesome thread.

No really, Eternal Doom wouldn't of been the same without your compositions Rich, still one of the most memorable soundtracks to megawads of the mid-nineties.

"Suspense!" (Map04):

Ha! That's actually one of my favorite tracks, that and the first level's song has a great "welcome to the world of Eternal Doom" sound to it.

By any chance, do you happen to have more MP3 recordings of ED's music?

These are really impressive to hear. Eternal Doom remains one of, if not, my favorite megawad project of all time, and as a fellow musician, it's nice to hear "doomin'" as a live track.

I got a question, if Eternal Doom Return from Oblivion eventually ends up completed, or at least with more levels added over time (kinda like what the original eternal doom did), would you write and score the new tunes for the project? The music on the original megawad is simply amazing and it'd be neat to hear some new tunes should the 7 level demo of oblivion be revisited!

Heh, I always like the level itself as well... IMHO definitely one of the better levels of the time (early 1994?).

Heh, just had another weird flashback:

"Suspense Reprise" (Map10): Hehe, that one was an experimentation of the afore-mentioned "Suspense"... albeit *REVERSED*. I took the original "Suspense", ran Cakewalk Pro's "Retrograde" operation (reverse all events) on it, but the outcome was fairly horrid <LOL>!

I did like the overall effect though, so's I ended up re-sequencing the entire song, based upon the reversed melody and other tracks in the MIDI <grin> :)

BurningCadavre said:

Hehe, speaking of which... the sound effect in the WAD "Welcome to Eternal DOOM! HA HA HA!". Yep, me, with a lot of GoldWave-ing and Cool Edit-ing <LOL>!

BurningCadavre said:

Actually, throughout all of the years, I have all of the ED MIDIs recorded to MP3 files, all recorded from my MIDI hardware. Unfortunately my miserable-arsed dialup out here in the woods (as well as the same, that I had when I lived down in Miami), inhibits me from uploading them.

What you/one could do though:

Extract all of the DOOM MUSs and convert to MIDI files (MIDI2MUS).

Download my "¥Weeds¥ General MIDI SoundFont v3.0" -> http://home.earthlink.net/~richnagel/#soundfonts / http://www.doomworld.com/vb/doom-ge...-soundfont-v3-0 .

Download the freeware media player "XMPlay" and it's soundfont compatable "MIDI Plugin" -> http://www.un4seen.com/xmplay.html / http://www.un4seen.com/download.php?xmp-midi .

Play back the MIDIs with a lot of reverb, and you'll hear a fairly close representation of what *I* hear on my PCs :)

(plugging XMPLay here) That MIDI Plugin for XMPlay is the absolute best soundfont compatable softsynth that I've ever heard. Now mind you, nothing beats REAL hardware, but it comes the closest to an SBLive/AWE32/AWE64 that I've ever heard :)

Most definitely :) One thing though, things seem pretty quiet over in the TeamTNT project forums (so's I wouldn't hold my breath), but I surely be interested in new music... if project ever gets a start again :)

Been "Rockin' in the Backwoods" again!

I extracted the music "At Doom's Gate" (by Robert Prince) from the "Hangar" level (Episode 1 Map 1) of id Software's DOOM, and then converted and optimized the MIDI file for Yamaha XG format. I then recorded it to an MP3, and uploaded it here -> http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/Yamaha_XG/D_E1M1_XG.mp3 .

THAT is how "At Doom's Gate" should SHOULD on all Yamaha XG compatable hardware :)

P.S. If you have any Yamaha XG compatable hardware (or the Yamaha S-YXG50 software synthesizer), here's the MIDI file -> http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/Yamaha_XG/D_E1M1_XG.mid :)

Glad ya liked it. Hehe, and glad ya saw the "album artwork" <grin> :)

That pic was something that was circulating around the Internet way back in 1995. From the original blurb about the pic (which I have NO idea where I got it from back then):

This is just a little modification I made to the Doom title screen. I figured that the character was ASKING to have a guitar placed in his hands! Hope you like it!

I liked the original screen more than the DoomII screen so I just combined the two - but there are plans to do more...

TaG - 1995

(edit) P.S. Just upload the original pic here -> http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/DOOM/DOOM_II_Rocking.gif :)

Hi Rich. What permissions are granted for use of the file? Obviously you'll get credit for creating that version, but do we need specific permission from you for its use?

On a related note... "Protect-A-DOOM Pool Fence Company"

Hehe, this is a little something that I threw together back in 1998 after the development of Team Eternal's "Eternal DOOM" for DOOM II.

Quite a few years before, I used to install child-protection pool fences for a company called "Protect-A-Child" (located down in Miami, Florida). This was a little joke map/WAD that I had created for DOOM II with a "pool fence theme", including a running DOOM II for DOS demo, as well as a replacement splash screen LOL!

Again, on a related note (Yamaha XG playback examples):

I extracted the title theme music "Grabbag" (by Lee Jackson) from Duke Nukem 3D, and then converted and optimized the MIDI file for Yamaha XG format. I then recorded it to an MP3, and uploaded it here: http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/Yamaha_XG/Grabbag_XG.mp3 .

Listen to the song and watch a YouTube video version here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwsmnS-waCU .

That is how "Grabbag" SHOULD/COULD sound on all Yamaha XG compatable hardware (e.g. DB50XG, MU50, S-YXG50) :)

By the way, this is how the same song sounds *without* the Yamaha XG conversion and optimization: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzU1EH3u0X0 .

If you have any Yamaha XG compatable MIDI hardware (or even simply the Yamaha S-YXG50 software synthesizer), here's the MIDI file: http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/Yamaha_XG/Grabbag_XG.mid .

One last Yamaha "XG-ified" tune... "Goss Groove" (music track 15, by John Broomhall) from Chris Sawyer's PC game "Transport Tycoon", converted and optimized for Yamaha XG format -> http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/Yama...s_Groove_XG.mp3 :)

Lame YouTube video here -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsHdyN5lPJ0 <grin>.

If you have any Yamaha XG compatable hardware (or the S-YXG50 software synthesizer), here's the MIDI file -> http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/Yama...s_Groove_XG.mid .

Lastly, more Transport Tycoon music goodness, some songs that I remixed/rearranged eons ago and recorded using my MIDI hardware here -> http://www.cmoo.com/snor/weeds/ttmusic.htm :)

By the way, this will probably be the last third-party Yamaha XG MIDI music conversion that I'll release... it's time to compose some more new music of my own (when I get the time)!
