Liam, I have a question re: cake, & seeing your affinity for them, I thought it worth asking:

Back in the early 90's I guess, there was a band called drugstore cake who released a song called "rock & roll lifestyle". What do you know of them?

& BTW, have you heard any Lou Reed? Or Velvet Underground? Great stuff.

PMS DIET:

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a group of physical and emotional symptoms that occur before your menstrual period begins. Some of the most common symptoms are listed inside this editorial. The symptoms occur two to 14 days before your period begins and decrease or disappear in the two first days of your period.

What PMS Isn't:
Not all symptoms related to the menstrual cycle are PMS. For example, stomach cramps, upset stomach or vomiting the first day or during your period are not PMS. PMS symptoms only occur before the first day of your period.

What Causes PMS?
No one really knows what causes PMS. Research suggests PMS is probably due to hormonal changes that occur before each period. It isn't clear why some women have symptoms that have a major effect on their lives while other women don't.

PMS is reported more often by women who:
Have had children
Had pregnancy complications (such as toxemia)
Report minor pain and cramping with periods
Eat a high sugar/high salt diet
Don't exercise regularly
Live a high stress life

Treatment:

General Diet:
Aim for a healthy diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables. Cut down on salt to prevent bloating, and sugar which may cause your blood glucose levels to swing, affecting your energy and appetite. It may help to cut back on fat which can encourage breast swelling, and caffeine and alcohol, as both can cause mood swings

General rules of nutrition:
Making a few changes in your nutritional habits might alleviate several physical and emotional PMS symptoms. The following suggestions are supported by evidence from clinical studies:

Take several (around six) small meals a day. Don't go for more than three hours without food.
Decrease intake of refined sugar, salt, red meat, alcohol, and caffeine (coffee, tea, soft drinks with caffeine, chocolate).
Increase intake of complex carbohydrates, leafy green vegetables, fruit, cereals, and whole grains.
Take vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) supplement. Doses between 50 mg and 300 mg daily are usually sufficient to alleviate PMS symptoms. Do not exaggerate the doses, as side effects (numbness and tingling in the hands and feet) may occur with megadoses of vitamin B6 (the side effects are reversible and disappear after discontinuation of the vitamin).
Take vitamin E supplement. Doses of 600 IU daily can decrease the tenderness of the breasts and size of breast lumps.
Take Magnesium supplement (look for amino acid-chelated magnesium). Magnesium relieves sugar craving and breast tenderness. Doses of 300-500 mg/day are efficacious, and are needed only during the time when the symptoms are present.
Take primrose oil, around 1500 mg per day. This supplement should relieve mood swings, irritability and depression symptoms.


There is a cure for PMS. Many PMS symptoms can be reduced or prevented. The first step is to learn more about your symptoms, since they are different for each woman.
