I would say this is a good idea since, the early Id games are now available on Steam. You might as well start a new community on it where you can start co-op or DM games and whatnot. I myself have never had any problems with steam, although I don't use it very often, and I've never downloaded one of the third party games from it. I myself would much rather buy the game in store and have the CD for it, but it still seems like an innovative content distributor mechanism and I think it has a fair bit of potential. If it slows down your computer, then close it or tell it not to load on start up, I haven't noticed any spyware due to it. I'd say good luck on a doom buddy list type thing on steam. I won't be joining since I almost never use steam, and I'm not going to download the DooM games on it since I already own them, but it never hurts to have a new gathering place, or a beacon for newer players to flock to.
